I am not sure general audiences arent that stupid but it certainly is hurting media to write for the lowest common denominator. Espeically as no matter how much a movie or show spoon feeds something i feel like some audience members miss things. Its going happen no matter what so might as well write it well.

Too bad that the mono setting you were using is somehow broken. (It should not sound worse.) In general mono is the right way to go when you can’t hear both channels well but they have to be remixed correctly. I don’t know where you changed the setting but if it was a system-wide one, try changing the output in the media player (e.g. VLC should be able to do it) or find a software that can re-encode the file (e.g. FFmpeg).

Essek got way in over his head. Even if he wanted to take the beacon back he couldn't. And if he doesnt continue his deal then the empire simply needs to give his name as the traitor to the bright queen. Or reveal his mother's condition or both. Trent's mastery of propaganda and manipulation is downright scary. And he can throw fireballs on top of that.

so what I think is going on is that the 1st four eps set up the OVERALL plot being the Beacon Heist and the start of the War of Ash and Light, these last 4 are going to set up the personal plots of our characters, last episode set up things for Caleb and started stuff for both Beau and Nott, and this episode sets things up more for Beau, we get the start of Molly plot, Fjord plot get a big push forward, Yasha gets touched upon and we start the plot of another charcter but I am not saying who cause that will be spoilers but to those of us who watched C2, WE KNOW and I hope they keep that chacters VA throughout the rest of the series cause I LIKE IT!

They were certainly groomed for this. Trent's grooming began before they ever entered the academy. He's the Archmage of Civil Influence. He is basically on the cabinet for the empire's government. And he deals with the public and everything the most. Every potential student of the academy knows who he is, as when Bren was so eager to meet him. And he also influences how society works and what is valuable and stuff. The empire is very big into the rule of law and obeying the government and doing your best to help the empire grow. Its a core cultural principle directly influenced by Trent. Bren's parents jumped at the chance to send him to school to serve the country because of it. As did Bren. Trent grooms the entire empire.

Woot! I clocked Nathan Fillion as The Gentleman immediately! And always lovely to hear Zehra Fazal (Mara from She-Ra) as Tasha the Curator. Agreed. The name "Trent" is an interesting choice for an evil wizard. "I am a seeker of forbidden knowledge! A knower of the Arcane! I've seen things that would warp the minds of lesser men! When I am done, the world will cower in fear at the name of Trent!" Molly has had the best lines. Charming motherfucker. An excellent mediator. I think this episode may be the goriest episode in this entire animated universe so far.

Critical Role just continues to have Critical Hits with this and Dispatch. As a Lovecraft fan, I’m very interested in learning more about Fjord’s Great Old One/Elder God Patron. I have a feeling though that we probably won’t get more on that front until later Seasons.

Liam really did want us to think about moral philosophy with Caleb. . . He was very much groomed, manipulated and brainwashed. . . But he also did many horrible things. He is also no more groomed or brainwashed then Owelia was . . . so if he isn’t responsible for his crimes was she? Essek is being lied to and manipulated as well. . . Caleb at this point would likely say that both he and Owelia are monsters but the mighty are growing to trust and love him. . . I believe Liam has a quote talking about how he wanted to play a character who is the villain of their own story.

I think Essek demonstrates the difference between Intelligence and Wisdom. He is a man of science who is trying to solve the equation of finding a cure for his mom. Working with Trent has led to a solution, but at great cost. If he was wise, he would have accepted that his mom was doing to die, and not risk starting a war to save her.

And now that the trauma dumps are all out of the way, it's time for some good ol' fashion D&D shenanigans. And Yasha giving all the Sapphics very strong "I can fix her..." feelings. The big stone golems are clearly CG and I love how they managed to animate them to feel like they are 50' behemoths. Very Pacific Rim vibes. And they were animated on 2s (or 3s?) to match the hand drawn. --- The actual speakers of an earbud aren't that big ... I wonder if you could take them out of their housings and 3D print a new housing so you could put both in the same ear? Mono stereo!

Since this is NOT a spoiler to the Mighty Nein, Nydas Okiro was a character from the short campaign called Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, helmed by DM Brennan Lee Mulligan (the current DM of Campaign 4).

What helps me remember that his name is Trent Ikithon, is that the players would always refer to him as Trent icky thong when they were playing... somehow that helped the name stick out to me XD Don't know if that'll help you, but it's what I got XD EDIT: Well, never mind, someone already shared that trick with you

Looks like switching to mono has downsides - like I said before my left ear clearly isn't as bad as Mosco's, but maybe just tweaking the balance towards the left will help? I've also been watching with subtitles that include captions for other sounds (like the pickaxes right at the beginning of this episode) more often lately

I think what the king meant when he said "There's more to life than knowledge." is that seeking it out can lead to big consequences, isn't always worth the risk, and that one must have the wisdom to know when to stop. Knowledge and wisdom are two different things after all.

Don't get me wrong, it was stupid for Essek to ever think he could trust Trent, but I understand and relate to his desperation to find a cure. I don't know too much about this part of the campaign, but I'm sure there was something (most likely the Blight Queen) preventing him from studying the Beacon in it's own kingdom. Getting it outside the kingdom was likely the only way, and the Volstruckers had the ability to do that. So, he took the chance.

While knowledge is important, I believe the point that King Dwendell was trying to make is that sometimes the pursuit of knowledge can lead to dangerous outcomes, and the knowledge gained may not have been worth it.

I wouldn't have caught that Cinder's tattoo is so similar to Yasha's! I actually wonder if this was intentional (or maybe subliminally motivated by the writers). Laura Bailey and Travis Willingham did voices in Volume 3 RWBY and I think at least some of the cast are fans. In fact Laura Bailey was the voice of Amber, the Fall Maiden, and that particular tattoo on Cinder's neck appeared when she got the Fall Maiden's powers. You might be on to something :) I loved your reaction as always and also love your Yang phone case so much so that I've been looking for one for myself to buy in Canada ;)

I think the king's comment about there being "more to life than learning" was meant more in terms of knowledge for its own sake. Yes, it is important to learn new things that help us grow, but seeking knowledge for the sole purpose of *having* knowledge is a vacuum of ideals.

I recommend watching CR’s EXU Calamity. Its a mini series actual play that is SOOOOO good. Many people Say it’s the best of CR. It has Nydas Okiro/Lou Wilson from this episode and Zerxes Ilerez/Luis Carazo from VM/the devil Pike played cards with. It is amazing and emotional. Critters are hoping for an animated movie or miniseries
