Here it is! This is the episode that will give Mosco the oooooh looooorrrreeee! And boy, this one is deep! 🤩

Red Demonica

Been waiting so long for this one! This is gonna be so gooooooood!

LaviPastelQueen

Not you blaming Weiss and qrow for the train derailment when technically it was just that big alpha (I think they call it a sphinx I may be wrong) Grimm lol

Spadeas

"This will be the day we waiting for" because yep, it's time for the lost fable :D

julia

well to be FAIR one could say it was supremely unlucky that the alpha’s final death blow hit the train/tracks

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I don't think Ozpin killing Cinder would end the power of the Maiden. A better question would be why was he so dumb enough to think it was a good idea to give that power away that could end up with bad people getting it, and another better question would be why he can't open the vaults that he personally sealed and a third question that seems more important is why he, the person who gifted the powers not be able to take them back. Cinder has to get the relic, though I have no idea how she knows that team RWBY has it. She should assume that Raven does. Yes, Salem is a victim here. The 2 God's are idiots. Everything that has happened is all on them. The God of Light should have just let this one slide and he and his brother could just agree not to bring anyone back. Or just killed him again and leave Salem to grieve and be angry at them. During the narration from the very first episode by Salem we learned that Mankind was born from dust. I think that dust came from the magic that the God's gave to the original humans on the planet.

CheetsAC7

The likelyhood that Salem was wandering the world alone for millions of years is one of the most horrifying aspects of this show for me.

Moonas

Yes, That's something Elijah didn't catched - When Salem will understand meaning of life and death - then she will rest (which mean she will finally die) But Salem don't understand this so she want gather relics to summon gods and destroy this world. Jinn gave them answer how to destroy her. Oz can't defeat her, she need to do understand so she can die.

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Now THAT's how you do a lore dump! (One of the longest episodes in all of RWBY, no less)

Ann_Temki

Ah yes, time for the LOOOOOOORE episode

Rob Bob

My question is was their daughters the original maidens or were the original maidens are the ones from the world of remnant. I love how they keep it ambiguous as either could be true. I personally think the ones from world of remnant are the real maidens and Oz thought they reminded him of his daughters who dies.

Ryan

Now, Mosco, for all the Bees' Schnee's fanfics on AO3, your final question - what color are Jinn's eyes?

Fred Smith

You're missing 2 things: SALEM is trying to collect the relics. So what happens when SHE brings them together? and 2. Ozma asked how do I DESTROY Salem. Which is the monkiest of monkey paw questions.

SportySpice

Making Salem immortal is fulfilling their promise to make her respect the balance of life and death in a twisted way. She went in demanding Oz not have to die, and she spends millennia wishing for her own death. The other key piece of the Gods’ rule: “As long as this world turns, you shall walk its face.” And she said she chose Cinder as her vessel for the Maiden powers (they are keys to the vaults). We can do the math! The Brothers are definitely of the more Greek god-style “capricious but fallible” flavor. This episode really had me floored. Just so well done.

Nurydian

Like in DnD, you have to word your Wish spell just right or you will not get what you want from it. Oz ask Jinn 'How can he destroy Salem" and not the correct question "How do I defeat Salem". I for one would think she could be lock away just like the relics were.

LikeCat

A better question would have been „How can Salem be defeated?"

Celly

These chapters were a turning point for RWBY arming our girls, and more, with the wisdom to face the rest of the series. I will say that I also watched Elijah's reaction to Mighty Nein today and heard your remark about volume 6 chapter 9 and wished that reaction was today. Also, you touch on so many things including so many things that are relevant. None of what I will suggest has ever been realized or confirmed so they aren't spoilers just the thoughts of a fan. You touch on the importance of the Moon and indeed saw the meteor shower of moon fragments upon Remnant. I truly believe that was where Dust came from and will prove important but alas we still don't know. Jinn revealed that Ozma could not kill Salem. That doesn't mean someone else couldn't. Finally, the only other thing I don't think most catch was the wording of the curse of the gods upon Salem. "So long as this world turns, you shall walk its face. You must learn the importance of life and death. Only then may you rest" You certain touched upon the second part. Ponder the first and keep that in the back of your mind while you watch more of this escalating drama.

KellyBunny

THE EPISODE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR FOR FOUR SEASONS!!! So excited to watch this

Nurydian

The point I am making is that Oz ask the WRONG question, and every action he took from that point took him on a path that took the group to this moment that has made him lose his allies. Because he himself doesn't believe Salem could be defeated, only countered. He is not playing to win, only a stalemate.

Zirkumflex

And now after the mother of all lore drops we know what Oz is hiding: that the backstory for RWBY is Remnant's messiest divorce. But to be a bit more serious, the lost fable is RWBY's longest episode (if we exclude the extra long credits from the final episodes) and it explains so much about the world in general and Salem specifically.

Martin E Melcher

"How can I defeat Salem?" Is what he asked. Not "how can Salem be defeated." Personal theory, is that Ozma still loves Salem, so he wouldn't be able to do it of he could

CB Jones

So a couple of notes on Cinder. She's not going after Raven because a) she has no way of finding her, Raven's tribe is nomadic and she only found them the first time because Lionheart called in favors to track them + Raven can teleport around the world and so can't really be tracked, and b) she just lost a 1v1 against Raven and has no reason to believe she'd win a second attempt. She's also not going after Ruby for the same reason she didn't touch her in Vol5, she can't. Salem wants Ruby alive and has forbidden Cinder from killing her. Ultimately Cinder is Salem's servant and Salem charged her with retrieving the Lamp, she just failed and will either need to correct her failure or cut herself loose. Othe than that, yeah, The Lost Fable is a lot. Honestly I commend CRWBY for making an episode which is essentially a 25 minute lore dump but is still completely engaging, it's a testament to the seeds they've planted across the previous 5 Volumes how you can feel things slotting into place as the story goes on. And I love your reaction to Salem's "punishment" and the brothers' hypocrissy, the brother of light cares SO deeply about "the balance of life and death" until a grieving widow outsmarts him. Then he's handing out immortality left and right and letting his brother murder everyone else. The so called "gods" are proud, petty and, despite creating them, have a poor understanding of humans both individually and as a group. As for destroying Salem, who knows? With the brothers as capricious as they are there's no reason to believe their initial charge to Salem would still hold weight, if it ever did (how would you even quantify that anyway?), and given how offhandedly they wiped out humanity the first time would it ever be worth the risk of summoning them back? Unless of course you wanted to destroy the world...

Ryan

Chapter 2: The decision to lionize (pun indented) Headmaster Leo in death was the right one, tactically speaking. But not including the group in that decision, not explaining his train of thought, was the wrong one. The only Faunus headmaster being culpable in both the fall of Beacon and Haven? That would only amplify the prevailing negative opinions about them across Remnant. And that would sow more division, attract more Grimm. I'm surprised E-lijah wasn't watching to catch your live reaction to Jinn... or the girl in the tower. Chapter 3: The gods are cunts. Semantics. It's always semantics. Ozpin can't defeat Salem, but Mosco can. All she has to do is say the F world once, and her fate is sealed.

CrowOfAFeather

The train wasn't derailed because of Weiss, it derailed because of the Sphinx Grimm's fireball hitting the tracks. Weiss used her Semblance with Gravity Dust to keep everyone from being flung off the train as best as she could. Nope, they are literally just having this discussion in front of the old lady. They are kinda ignoring/forgetting about her in the midst of the heated argument. Cinder wasn't "ignoring" Ruby last battle. She had her priorities to take the Maiden powers and the Relic, and then planned to fight Ruby herself. She even told the others to keep Ruby alive because she wanted to savour the moment and not let anyone else kill her. She had a plan and it didn't go the way she wanted. I don't want to bring up the whole bit about V5 again. No, the tower is not Beacon, obviously. First time seeing a reactor calling the girl Salem and not getting shocked by the reveal. huh. His poor children didn't survive...but they served as inspiration for the Maidens. And eventually, the teams in the Huntsmen/Huntress Academies, consisting of four, and the emphasis on teamwork. Obviously they wouldn't show the bodies, but the doll one of them was holding onto is ruined. I always loved this chapter just for the visuals and finally getting some much needed lore about Ozpin and Salem, and finding out why she wants the relics so badly. I could say a lot about the gods, but I'll save that for another time.

SportySpice

Adding that re: the Maidens. I think we are to assume those four girls he gifted with the powers just reminded him of his daughters (as his daughters were all killed by Salem during the failed escape).

Symbolic Remnant

And he didn’t even say “defeat,” but “destroy.” Yet more specific

Taigan

Exactly. Oz asked the wrong question. If he’d asked how Salem could be defeated, or more generally, stopped he might have gotten a different answer. I have my own personal theory. It hit me that there is one fairy tale that RWBY has never referenced and so is noticeable in its absence: Sleeping Beauty. Perhaps Salem can’t be killed. But maybe she can be put to sleep forever?

SQX Barto

"You can't." - It can be interpreted multiple ways - You specifically can't - maybe all four maidens together can (it's a popular fanfic theory). You can't - You can't make yourself kill her, even if you have the power for it, you don't have the heart for it.

Rachel Mae

Thank youuu for pointing out the end conditions of salem's curse that the Brothers set. Like this episode gives us a very clear answer to the how do we defeat Salem question ("you must learn the importance of life and death only then may you rest") but reactors and fndm always seem to get hung up on the wording of Ozma's how do I destroy salem... "There will be no victory in strength" -salem v1 and Ruby being referred to as a simpler soul and a spark to ignite change in v1 and v5. It's been laid out for us from the start

SQX Barto

I'm sure her logic was also influenced by the dark pool she jumped in.

supersoaker

Little miss malachite is based on little miss muffet. You know, "Little miss muffet sat on a tuffet eating her curds and whey, along came a spider and sat down beside her, and frightened miss muffet away"

Phoenix_mercury

Both things can be true🤷 she needs to learn the importance *and* Oz's wording was an issue

rickdwarrior

It looked like at least one daughter had silver eyes.

Dre

Iirc in a later chapter this volume Cinder reiterates that she was under orders from Salem to take Ruby alive. So I think Mosco will stop bringing it up once she gets to that point.

Dre

“I kind of feel bad for her” I mean yeah! The Gods did her so dirty. Sure Salem tried to manipulate them, but their punishments went way too far. The Gods being petty caused this conflict. The God of Darkness being so petty he slammed the door as he left and broke the moon lol.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

No , I wish they were the Maidens that came back to vist them. Unfortunately she killed her children while fighting Oz. Salem could also finally die by getting all 4 relics and having The God's wipe out the planet. That is most likely her goal, and who her dad was is most likely irrelevant

TheRavenWanderer

-Mosco goes on about hoping Yang will not be used for Ruby's 'character development' in the future- CRWBY: "Mhm. Mhmmm... Duuuuly noted...."

.

So the daughters weren't the maidens. We know in the tale of the Four Maidens that Oz gave powers to four sisters who visited him. My headcanon is that the sisters might've reminded him of his daughters. Creating the maidens could've been a sort of homage.

BGTitan

Long comment incoming. I apologize in advance. Ep2: Honestly I love this episode a lot. The sheer amount of tension and build up for Team RWBY's side of the episode is crazy. And the Jinn reveal is insane. What I love is that, yes, we can see Oz's point about his actions being backed by experience. We get that. But when your lies and omissions start actively endangering people (ie bringing a Grimm magnet onto a train full of civilians) that's when we start to have a problem. Also the line "they deserved better than the truth" has never quite sat right with me. Not from a writing standpoint but... Leo was literally the reasons most of if not all of Mistral's Huntsmen died. He gave them to Salem. Like... bro. Also actively lying about the wishes. Dang bro. "I did not lie to you," Ozpin lied. The way Blake's ears perk up when Jinn stretched! I know what you are, girlie pop. To be fair to Yang here, she just got Blake back after Blake chose to run away and abandon her after one of the most traumatic moments of both their lives. I'd be skittish about her suddenly disappearing too. That said.... BUMBLEBY BABY!!!! And we do see her open her mouth to say Ruby it just cuts to Weiss in a fun little transition. Ep 3: God of Light: Life and death is an important cycle and must not be disrupted. Also the Gods: Let's make this one immortal and then put this one in a reincarnation cycle. Freakin hypocrites. No but seriously, I love how gods are always shitty and make stupid decisions. Instead of just either killing her themselves or just letting her eventually die of whatever, they decide to make her immortal and thus cause this whole freakin affair. And then there's the Salem of it all. A lonely girl locked away for most of her life that has no idea how to handle loss or grieving.... twisted and gnarled into something truly monstrous from a mix of outside influence and of her own design. I love what this lore does for Salem as a character, making her so much more interesting on top of the reveal that she can't be killed. I love the subtle difference in Salem's voice before and after her transformation. Before her dip into the Grimm pool her voice sounds gentle and light, but after it has this almost soothing rasp to it, and honestly... it tickles my brain. Jen Taylor does a phenomenal job this episode. And to clarify, the kids were not the Maidens. Four is just a big number in this series. The story, how we heard it before in V3 and V5, is actually what happened. One of Oz's reincarnations gave four women the powers, probably because they reminded him of his kids if anything.

RetroBeastto

The turning point of every RWBY reaction

Geass

Oz asked how Salem could be destroyed, not defeated. There is a difference. He also asked how he could do it, which could imply that someone else could do it.

Ryan

She doesn't need any "character development", remember? She drinks *milk*!

Jittercritter

I love how the gods are written so much, it’s so ironic and really good commentary of any kind of severe/highly powerful authority figure and how ignorant they ca be of the people they’re supposed to be representing or standing for. Both the phrasing and the tone the God of Light uses when he says “you will reincarnate but in a manner that ensures you are never alone” imply that he believes the reincarnation system he put in place was merciful and kind, but Tha only proves he truly does not understand humans or the concept of independence, the importance of a soul or individuality, etc. We have seen firsthand how traumatic, strenuous, and horrific the reincarnation process is both for Ozma and for the soul he’s taking over (Oscar), but the God of Light thought he was doing him a kindness by setting it up that way instead of just making him immortal like they did Salem. It truly shows that despite telling Salem that SHE needed to understand the importance of life and death, they themselves don’t either. They are hypocritical, ignorant, careless, impulsive… everything people in power usually are. Perfect. Frustrating, but perfect. Exactly what I would expect from a god clearly based in mythology.

Jittercritter

((**SPOILERS for anyone who might watch Red vs Blue**)) “She could never grow…” Inability to move on is a prominent theme in RvB as well. It’s really shocking how RvB and RWBY have almost the exact same inciting incident is you trace the chronology all the way back to the beginning and swap the genders; they seem like COMPLETELY different stories at first but the root cause of everything is almost identical, and the domino effect that follows has some similarities too, which is super fascinating to me. As a writer myself things like that are just always fun to spot.

Cali Jester

This is legit my favorite episode and I'm glad Mosco loved it too.

Lee Goldberg

The goal is actually to PREVENT Salem from gathering the relics, since once collected, she could destroy ALL of humanity (and maybe including herself if she is still seeking death)

Lee Goldberg

Yeah, so many alternatives. For example, they could trap her in that realm between dimensions, or find some way to negate or de-power her.

Lee Goldberg

I thought, since the 4 daughters had magic, and Oz had his reincarnation ability when they were born, it resulted in their POWERS being reincarnated, as opposed to the girls themselves, like Oz does.

Lee Goldberg

I'm surprised Mosco didn't catch onto the idea (like Elijah did) that maybe the way to defeat Salem was to de-power her. Or that the goal is to avoid the gods' judgement. Considering what we've seen of the gods, I doubt humanity could meet their standards.

Lee Goldberg

Anyone notice that when the God of Light evaporated all those grimm, the light that emanated from him looked a lot like what happens when Ruby uses her Silver Eyes.

Migli

one point i notice is OZ asked Jinn "how DO I destroy Salem" not if Salem could be destroyed / defeated

Lee Goldberg

I've seen this episode so many times, but I just notice that when the flashback begins, the path leading to the castle where Salem is, is the Yellow Brick Road

Migli

it always made more sense to me that the maidens were his daughters since they inherited both part of Salem's magic and part of Oz's ability to reincarnate because that makes more sense to me than Ozpin being able to have magic comparable in strength to the gods in terms of creating something that can transcend death because although its not a complete soul transfer like Oz, the maidens as entities are in a way immortal always having 4 in existence at all times and we've been shown that in universe fairy tales don't actually tell the full story, so i don't understand why the tale of the seasons would be any different, considering no one in Oz's inner circle knew of his past it would make sense he would use the fairy tale as a cover when letting people like Glynda in on the maidens existence

Arashi

Well, just because the questions are 'all used up', doesn't strictly mean Jinn is out of the picture for 100 years. Just that she is not going to be forced to answer. Though poking someone in their off-time is kind of rude I think. :p Little Miss Malachite. You were close on the Ittsy Bittsy Spider. She's from Little Miss Muffet, who sat on her tuffet. :p Once again, from someone who has been watching since the first trailers. Imagine the last scene and then having to wait a week to get any answers. Welcome to the Real World of Remnant. 5 Volumes and 3 chapters to get into the actual story of the world. Yet there's still more world building to be done. A bit amusing that through the first part of the tale, you kept going 'what did you do' to Oz when he is pretty much blameless of anything that happened prior to his first full reincarnation. There is a lot of speculation on the Maidens being the daughters. Nothing official has been put out that I know of, but a lot assume the first Maidens were the rebirths of them. Though we've never seen any case of past lives or what happens after death in Remnant other then Oz. One thing to keep in mind with Jinn is she will answer the question, exactly as it was asked. Wording is Important. "How can /I/ /Destroy/ Salem?" Two absolute definitives that Jinn narrowed any answer. After all, 'How do I open this door' can have a very different answer 'how do you get out of this room'. Still, good catch on noting that Salem hasn't 'moved on' since Ozma's death, though the castle is not the same one. Her 'current' castle is in the Grimmlands (assumed to be former realm of the God of Darkness), it just looks like it, because she just can't let her past go.

Suplee215

With Lionheart, I feel like keeping that a secret is understandable but feels scummy. I also think the perspective Ozpin thinks at can feel hard to grasp. Yes, Lionheart is a terrible villain at this point. got dozens if not hundreds of hunters killed. But even if he joined Salem 10 years ago, that is still a couple decades of service to Ozpin. And for someone who is thousands of years old, changing sides can feel like a mistep. There is also the negativity factor and the faunus factor to consider. Knowing the headmaster of Haven was a betrayer will increase the panic the world is already feeling. and not good. and on top of that, it has the potential to really undermine the work Blake's family has done. Lionheart was the most prominent faunus in Mistral most likely. If he was revealed to be working with the white fang for the attack (and been doing it for years apparently) then a lot of the good will faunus has gained could be thrown out the window. especially with someone like Salem around who is good at maniplation.

Arashi

Well, according to Elijah's reaction to Jinn. "She has eyes?"

Suplee215

the arrogance is in how she tried to manipulate the god of darkness. She walked up to him and played on his insecurities and claimed he was the only one who could help her. when all she did was go to him as a last resort.

Laura Ibarbalz

Cinder wants Ruby to die but cannot kill her due to Salem's orders, so in volume 5 she orders everyone to be killed except for her. The question is: why does Salem want Ruby alive? Cinder has a trauma related to Ruby and her silver eyes; she is afraid of Ruby's powers because she lost an eye and an arm, which is why she trained to overcome her fear in volume 4. Cinder's priority is to obtain the relic to satisfy Salem and then the powers for herself.

Suplee215

While I dont think Lionheart or Raven know the full story, they both described Salem as impossible to defeat and a pointless effort. I think its fair to assume they know as much as Qrow knew. Which os that Salem and Ozpin been engaged in a shadow war for all of human history. Ozpin been unable to destroy her for thousands of years. That alone is enough to see Salem as unbeatable and lose hope.

Laura Ibarbalz

I was surprised to hear you mention in previous chapters that Ruby didn't do anything in Haven to get tired, I mean, she used her Silver Eyes a second time; it exhausted her and she still kept fighting afterward. Remember that in Beacon, after using her eyes, she was unconscious for many hours. Ruby was a leader as always; after all, she was the only one on her team who kept going after the Beacon tragedy. She inspired JNR to follow her. The others healed their wounds, but she remained on the battlefield. 😔

Wootcat

Also the arrogance in demanding the brothers return Ozma to her.

Suplee215

I can see that as covered by grief and desperation.

SK- Eferthigra

I don't think its outright said but since Leonhart's excuse was literally only we canty beat her I've seen things and Salem describes how scared Leonhart was when they first met I bet yes he learnt she cant be killed by first hand experience she probably let him kill her over and over again as for raven her big gripe oz was he wasn't telling the whole story and deceiving people that way while also saying she cant be killed and saying she's seen it first hand I think all sighs do point to the fact they betrayed him after learning he knew they couldn't win and kept sending them to there death anyway hell one of the lines in a song suppose to from Salem's perspective is "sending children to a war you know they cant win" which would have been Salem's pitch to hazel maybe he was so mad not because she died in training but because he learnt that the reason ozpin was doing this dangerous training for kids in the first place was to fight an unwinnable war the base of his rage is his sister but the reason its so big is he knows oz has been doing this knowing full well that that the fate they all will take ozpin also says when defending leo that he wasn't the first with a lot of emphasis perhaps the reason he painted leo in such a good light was he guessed that he betrayed him for the same reason as all those others and figured he couldn't really fault him for that knowing it was kind of his fault this is all head cannon but I think with this a lot of seemingly underwhelming writing seem a lot more powerful and there is a lot that seems to point to this and nothing I'm aware of that disproves it

DKscribe88

Not sure if anyone's said this yet, but in the Wizard of Oz book series, Ozma is Oz's full first name.

Mare

That will be addressed this volume so it's coming up soon.

DKscribe88

Anyone else notice how Yang and Blake's Aura/colors mimic the brother gods? I have a theory that somehow, they are going to come back to Remnant through Yang and Blake. Doesn't help that Yang's full name translates to Little Dragon Maiden. Back in V4, Taiyang used my sunny little dragon as a nickname for Yang.

Wootcat

We really don't know the truth at this point regarding the Maidens, and theories fall into two main camps; either Ozma granted the powers to four young maidens, or the daughters are the original Maidens. It's important to note how Oz's power and the Maiden powers are described. Nowhere are the Maiden powers referred to as reincarnation, only that the POWER is transferred to another. The rules also differ. Oz reincarnates into a like-minded soul, whereas the Maiden power is transferred to the person last in the maiden's thoughts (if a young enough woman), or a random young woman. These lead me to believe that the daughters were not the original Maidens. While "The Story of the Seasons" is most likely not a literal retelling of what actually happened, it makes more sense that somewhere in Oz's past, four young women reminded him of his lost daughters, and Oz intentionally bequeathed that power to them.

Konrad Dunbar

you know I've watched this episode a hundred times now and I never noticed that the space was the same as the vaults, I don't know why that never clicked, thank you for point that out to me, see this is why I love reactors! <3

Vex Valor

The Gods: We can't bring back your dead husband because that would disrupt the balance of life and death. Also the Gods: *kills the entire planet because one woman pissed them off, makes her live alone for millions of years, THEN brings back her dead husband anyways*

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Oscar is his first name. Ozma is a separate character, who appears in the sequels

Connor Hines

Ah yes, Volume 6 Chapter 3, also known as when the FNDM finds out that the Eternal War between Oz and Salem is history’s longest messiest divorce.

Cinder's Apologist

you summed it up perfectly. and tbh I feel like this is a point that far too many fans don't grasp or refuse to acknowledge

Cinder's Apologist

THE GODS ARE DICKS!!!! okay, time for some fairy tale connections and a bit of memory game... Lil Miss Malachite = Little Miss Muffet (with her curds and whey on the table before her) also, remember the two girls from the Yellow Trailer that Yang fought in the club? Melanie and Miltia Malachite... as in they are the daughters of Lil Miss Malachite. you can learn more about them in the book "Roman Holiday" which I strongly recommend reading prior to watching volume 9. yeah, Cinder is not going after Raven. Salem wants relics. Cinder knows this. Cinder might want Maiden powers but the relics are top priority, and the Maidens only matter as keys to the vaults where the relics are kept. now that the vault of the Spring Maiden has been opened and its relic (the lamp) removed, Raven does not matter. Cinder has to recover the relic she was supposed to grab. I love how you were both blindsided by all the big lore reveals AND still perceptive enough to connect some very important dots. I'm glad you honed in on how, again, THE GODS ARE DICKS and ultimately, while Salem has obviously done some bad shit, they were still excessively cruel. they threw a temper tantrum so destructive, it literally wiped out humanity once already and left a broken world with a shattered moon as a bonus. so why should Salem show any interest in appeasing such tyrannical gods? THAT is Ozma's curse: not just uniting humanity, but being forced to fulfill a divine mandate that pits him against the woman he loved. but not because she is 'evil' but because they are petty gods who just had to screw her over one more time. also I am so glad you observed that detail about the Ozlem palace and how it looks like Salem's current palace (known as Evernight btw). that is such a fascinating detail and so tragically poetic... and something to definitely keep in mind when you watch the next episode! ALSO YES BEACON ACADEMY IS THE TOWER. the school was literally modeled to look like the tower that Ozma rescued Salem from so long ago, only it was Oz that was in the tower. can you say "they got divorced and made it everyone else's problem"? final note: yes, the Maidens are derived from their daughters. but those four daughters were not the first Maidens. some time after that, a later incarnation of Oz bestowed his magic upon four women, but yes it is clearly a callback to the daughters he once had.

LucidDreamWolf88

But could there still be a way to beat her? Cuz he only asked jin how “he” can defeat Salem

Kitsune Kokoro

I love how you reacted "Damn! That's it?" to the single longest* episode of RWBY released to date XD *Not counting credits

EmberPanther

While Salem did go too far during The Lost Fable, the fault of this entire mess lies squarely on The Brothers in my opinion. Also, my first thought after the reveal about them not being able to kill Salem was “Yang is gonna rip Ozpin’s head off” shortly followed by “I hope she doesn’t because that would kill Oscar”.

David Johnson

To paraphrase Larry Niven in "The Magic Goes Away": Gods may answer your prayers, they may answer your enemy's, they'll *always* answer their own.

ELS_Art

You are meant to feel bad for you, The GODS ARE DICKS, welcome to RWBY! 🤣

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Yeah, if nothing else, she was directly responsible for breaking Leo's Aura and sending him into retreat.

B Dawn

Cinder was going after rwby and co for the relics; I think she actually valued more about not defying salem’s order than killing ruby, as she made a point in 5.12 to keep ruby alive before going to the vault and also made the deal with raven not because ruby was there(watts assumed that) but because she needed to do something to make raven cooperate. Also now that you’ve unlocked the Lore episode there’s a book about some in-world fairytales of the brothers and many other stories, that’s called Fairytales of Remnant; the book could give you a little more information on the brothers and their roles and everything else so maybe check it out?

Dayash

Ever since i realized that youre the kind of reactor who enjoys lore and storytelling and stuff like that I waited for you to get to this The Lost Fable episode sooo patiently lol

Justin Payne

Mosco the entire episode: We're getting so much! Also Mosco at the end: That's it?!

Jyoster

Oh boy, the big lore dump episode. The one which changed the whole story to what we know it as today. So many secrets revealed yet left with many questions for stuff that weren't addressed. And how this information shaped the plot going forward. It's certainly one of those episodes one needs to rewatch many times in order to full grasp at the info. Even after watching it countless times, I'm still piecing new info together, like the ultimate potential fate of Salem. Either she learns the value of Life and Death and successfully moves on to the after life, or the planet is destroyed once the brothers cast their judgement; regardless of the path, Salem will inevitably get what she wants, the relief of death.

Jyoster

Given what we know up to this point, the only way they could defeat Salem [without the planet being destroyed] is to have her learn the importance of Life and Death. Ruby could be the one to convey that to Salem, but it'll be a difficult path.

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah if the brothers weren't willing to bring Oz back(they were, when it served their purpose👀) then just send her to him instead, damn hypocrites "importance of life and death" *proceeds to make two people immortal whilst simultaneously killing all of humanity*...

Phoenix_mercury

Fr "importance of life and death" proceeds to make two people immortal whilst simultaneously killing all of humanity... Hypocrites

Stephen Mumford

I always liked how the Gods were presented as were the ancient gods of the Greek pantheon and such -- more like simply very powerful humans: flawed and petty at times; not all-powerful, all-knowing, all-benevolent beings.

Phoenix_mercury

Fr like question 1. Can Salem be stopped(open ended) then presuming its a yes q2. How can Salem be stopped

Phoenix_mercury

The one big pro for Oz's choice with Leo is the effect on others, we known mistral's "opinions" on Faunus... Telling them the headmaster(and highest standing individual) was working with the bbeg? How to make the Faunus suffer more in one step as well as undo/counter all the good Blake and co did in another step Vs letting him be remembered as the man he was prior to Salem and helping people's "opinions" of Faunus in mistral with "the headmaster gave his life trying to help" as an addition to what Blake and co did, I'd love to see flashbacks one day of Leo before Salem got in his head tbh, bcz yes the Faunus of mistral did deserve better than the truth

Stephen Mumford

Yeah, I didn't notice that connection the first time I saw it either, and that gives some stuff we see later in the series make a LOT more sense as an explanation than my initial acceptance of them as 'oh, well, I guess that's Just How Things Are in this universe's cosmology".

Cinder knows she's not going to be able to kill Raven after their last fight when Raven kicked her ass, so she's reprioritizing going after Ruby. Little Miss Malachite is based on Miss Muffet. Fun fact, she's actually the mother of the red and white twins who fight Yang in her trailer. Oh, I never noticed that about the similarities between the Vaults and the "between Realms" place! That does line up considering the Vaults are basically pocket dimensions.

DKscribe88

Oh. Whoops, my bad! Thanks for the correction! Admittedly, I only read the main title of the series. I looked up the name Ozma, and I guess the site I clicked was not right. Gotta do better at checking my sources.

Curtis Murphy

Cinder's probably hoping to get more power too before going against Raven again

Cinder's Apologist

so glad you get it re: Cinder. everyone fixates too much on her grudge with Ruby, ignoring the fact that she does indeed make a point to leave her alive at Haven and that she is intelligent enough to know the relics are the goal. OH YEAH. forgot to mention the Fairy Tales of Remnant. Mosco absolutely needs to read that.

I think by now (after Vol 9) everyone learnt that the Brothers are hypocrites tenfold... IYKYK

Nicholas Cummins

It's never directly stated what happened to the daughters, but I think that's mostly because they didn't want to directly show the death of children. His daughters, by my read, are not the maidens. They didn't take their magic from Ozma, they had their own. I believe the story of the maidens is roughly true and that Ozma sacrificed his own magic to empower four sisters. The thing that is omitted is that I think the original maidens reminded him of his daughters, and that's why he gifted them the powers.

Has anyone told Mosco about Elijah's reaction to Jinn yet? Hehe

Vic Walker

Welcome! Now you can start theorizing how the fuck can they stop Salem from destroying the whole planet, just in the hope she will finally die then (which is not really guarantee, if you think about, she is betting all in the line "as long as this planet turns you shall walk its surface", but who knows what would really happen, because those two brothers are full of bullshit as you can see)

Rixec2

There was a song called Sacrifice from volume 2 that caused endless debate for years, people trying to figure out its meaning. Things finally began to make sense after The Lost Fable.

James S

Good news/bad news, Mosco. Good news: Elijah has mostly moved on from her crush on Cinder, so you no longer have to worry about competing with her. Bad news: She moved on to crushing on Jinn. So... yeah...

dilemmafordays

I've always found it interesting how Salem, who supposedly was someone 'with a desire for pure destruction', was living isolated in a shack in the woods, minding her business, when Oz arrives. Also, I love how you picked up on the fact that really, the only ways to achieve 'world peace' or unity would be either a) genocide and dictatorship, which Salem knows and Ozma agreed to in the past, or b) uniting everyone in the world against Salem, also a challenge given the givens. Gives the Great War more flavour tbh, Ozma tried it and realised she was right - you can't colonise your way to unity, and he decides to hide the relics away, even after his overwhelming victory

Nihilero

That is fair. Jinn is hawt. I wish I could be such

James S

"Yes, I wish to receive knowledge. Knowledge is so important." - Elijah (paraphrased)

... wow i never realized it was the same castle... wow

Keira Johnson

Don't know if it was mentioned as of yet. But little Miss Malacki is based on little miss muffet
