The challenge by BrittpowwPixel

Luís Pacheco

One final time. As said the prophet: "I see your palace covered in red. Faces of men who had long believed you're dead. I see your wife with a man who is haunting, a man with a trail of bodies" And the choir sings at the end of No Longer you: "Kill all the suitors for love" "Odysseus, Odysseus, Odysseus..."

cosmotron

In before all the comments are like “haha Penelope is Spartan so this was just flirting to her”. Yes, Penelope is from Sparta, but NO it is not the popular militarized Sparta people think of. She would not have been trained in combat or be any more into violence as a result of living in Sparta. Which, imo, is one of the things that actually makes her more interesting. She is just Like That. She accepts what Odysseus did and loves him no less (and that’s right out of The Odyssey, in it he tells her everything, including about Circe and Calypso, while she tells him of how she suffered under the suitors). There’s even a line in The Odyssey about how she would probably like the sight of him in the blood of the suitors lmaoo. They match each other’s energy and intelligence, and if she had to do a bunch of bad things to get back to him she definitely would have.

ElusiveViper

Just a man plays at the end of the song and he became what he said he is just a man who would trade the world to see his son and wife

Klaytor

You got to do Neal illustrators animations

BrightHeart

if there's one animatic I recommend its Gigi's god games

EDHPlayer

Easily my favorite of the whole thing, from The Challenge to WYFILWMA. So fun fact! After “Hold Them Down”, if you put the titles of the remaining songs together with a comma in between them, you get “Odysseus, I Can’t Help But Wonder, Would You Fall in Love With Me Again”. So to start off with, “The Challenge” kinda speedruns through Penelope’s arc in The Odyssey. The shroud she speaks about is something that is gradually talked about in The Odyssey, mostly when she’s getting pressured into picking a suitor she counters with “oh no I need to finish my shroud first” while unweaving a good chunk of her progress each night. It isn’t until one of her servants catches her and snitches to a suitor she’s been having an affair with that the secret comes out. So then she is forced to quit stalling and pick a suitor. She agrees, but creates a challenge that will pick for her. Except the challenge is impossible unless you are a Greek Hero. So it effectively is rigged. I believe I mentioned this in WISDOM SAGA, but the suitors are a lot less…”vile” for the lack of a better term. They toe the line when it comes to breaking the rules of sacred hospitality, and when they KNOW they are gonna they do it in some very roundabout ways. They wouldn’t dare attempt to kill Telemachus on Ithaca, nor would they even discuss the idea of taking Penelope by force. They were aware that there was a line that, when crossed, meant certain doom. Yet they had toed the line too much, which was used as a reason for Athena to push forward a plan that would bring Odysseus home and slaughter the suitors. The slaughter itself in The Odyssey was confined to a single room, rather than the whole palace. Penelope had actually watched the competition for a solid few hours before leaving. Telemachus had stayed, and he had long returned from his trip, which was to ascertain the status of Odysseus. He did participate in the slaughter, standing alongside Papa. Telemachus had actually crossed paths with Odysseus long before the slaughter. Odysseus was disguised as a wandering beggar, but when meeting Telemachus, Athena had his disguise dropped. That was where they planned to kill the suitors. I have very few words for “Would You Fall in Love With Me Again”. It’s an amazing song, with a lot of emotion and powerful tones. My one issue with it is the lyric “the tree where we first met”. That tree would have been in Sparta, where Penelope lived until marrying Odysseus. The tree that was used to carve their bed was where they were wed.

Yes. I'm 100% with Mosco on this one with how I'd take out the suitors. I'd efinitely be aiming a lot lower then Ody was. It's also moments like this that I realized that despite all the similarities I see in me and Elijah's personalities, I see just as much similarities between me and Mosco. "I didn't even go through the 20 years of torture to get to that point, I'm just Scottish." And "you don't think those horns haven't gouged the eyes of the English?" Absolutely loved that! And I'm part English and Scottish. On a different note, 'Would you fall in love with again', is one of my favourite songs from Epic. It always hits me in the feels. And I love how Ody acknowledges that he isn't the same person he use to be and how Penelope asked him what he did and still loves him. Honestly, I couldn't imagine going 20 years without my husband (not that I have one) and the fact that their love survived all that just makes me want a love that strong, ideally without all the tragedy though.

Hope

Wouldn’t You Like by Slander has to be one of my favourites! Love their depiction of Hermes, and the animation is golden especially considering it’s done on FlipaClip of all things. There’s also any of the animatics (Only 1 full as of writing this, rest seem to be WIP’s) by PimPichc, they always have very unique character designs in their animatics, and the animations themselves are so well detailed and formatted. Thank you for your voice and reactions as always <3

I mean, the suitors were very much talking about/planning to kill Telemachus, though they probably wouldn't have done it on Ithaca's shores. I think it's pretty clear in the story though that they were on the verge of fully crossing over a lot of those lines, especially once it became clear that Penelope's challenge was essentially rigged as you put it. And while they may not have been literally singing about breaking down her bedroom door, they still absolutely made inappropriate comments about her (when she first enters the scene in like book 1 of The Odyssey, it's described that they "broke into an uproar" with "prayers to lay beside her" and Telemachus has to step in and tell them to stfu and says that they have been a 'plague' to her) and any relationship they would have had with her would inevitably have been forced or coercive. She was ready to take her own life before marrying any of them. Epic definitely makes it a lot more in-your-face, but I would absolutely argue that she still faces a similar threat, even if it wouldn't have been to the same degree. That's just how I feel about it though. I do also wish we saw Penelope's shroud plan play out over a longer period of time, though The Challenge is great.

Chloe Small

Well, I definitely see Vaggi(e) in Mosco even more after this video. Wonder, if Mosco was in HH, would she be one of the Exorcist angels? She definitely thinks some people are irredeemable, unlike our dear Char-char ♥

cosmotron

You should check out animatics of some of the cut songs too, especially "Need Her to Be Mine", that one is so cute. But there are a lot of lovely animatics out there -- I highly recommend more from Ximena Natzel, as well as Virus AP, MarComie, and more of Clover's.

Rachel Mae

the number of times that I've been driving somewhere only for Would you fall in love with me again to come on and then I'm just "well I guess I have to sit in this parking lot and have a cry now" lmao

purplesaimiri

i think what penelope asked of ody whas not just a test but also to show him like you still remmeber stuff like that and even get mad about just destroying it so you are in a way different but teh same

Joey Quixote

Yes. With sadistic glee, ruthlessness, and a "squirt of lemon". Someone else pointed this out, and I absolutely over this fact: Polyphemus Scylla Charybdis Odysseus The only songs with named characters. All monsters.

BGTitan

The Challenge: We've heard the singer for Penelope before. In Ody’s dream in Keep Your Friends Close, and as the siren back in the Thunder Saga. But her first proper introduction to the musical is soooooo good man. She sounds incredible! And immediately we understand why Ody loves this woman. What a queen. Hold Them Down: As uncomfortable as the lyrics get, the vocals go so hard! Why he sing so good?! Odysseus: The cathartic slaughter we’ve all been waiting for! The final boss being our boy here! Honestly couldn’t have happened to a bigger group of bastards. Aiming for the torches… like Scylla. I Can’t Help But Wonder: Those harmonies!!!!!!!!! This song is so sweet man. And then that closure with Athena, how they’ve swapped places essentially. Ugh. Pain. WYFILWMA: Quickest way to make me cry is to play this song. I can’t. It never fails. Tears every time. Penelope’s voice is just… so powerful. So good. Crazy. I need a love like Ody and Penelope. And as the great poet once said: that’s the end of that. I literally have an entire list of recommended alt animatics for this but I'll try (and fail) to shorten it and narrow it down to some of my favorites: - Open Arms - mircsy - Warrior of the Mind - mircsy - Remember Them - Sirell - Ruthlessness - Anniflamma, Gigi - Puppeteer - Smoolio, Ximena - Wouldn't You Like - Ximena - Underworld - TheeArteest - Suffering - Duvetbox, Ximena, Clover, Sirell - Different Beast - Duvetbox - Scylla - BrittPowwPixel - Mutiny - Riley G - Thunderbringer - BrittPowwPixel, Anniflamma - Legendary - Gigi - Little Wolf - Gigi - Love In Paradise - BrittPowwPixel, Livestream - God Games - Gigi, Livestream - The Challenge - Ximena Natzel, BrittPowwPixel - Hold Them Down - Orange, BrittPoww (Trigger warnings very much still in tact) - Odysseus - Livestream - I Cant Help But Wonder - BrittPoww - WYFILWMA - Livestream, BrittPoww, Ximena, Nya Tyan

TinIsHere

Yes I don't care. Rape literally cannot be justified in any manner. Kill them all

Liam Gradwell

For me: YES. Anyone who would threaten murdering and butchering someone and raping someone, especially I cared for, then yes. I would be exactly on Odysseus’s wavelength there.

Zora Brightwood

I love Mosco's dark humor it matches mine.

Lando

I have LOVED this whole series so much and Im glad you did too. I highly recommend any of BrittPowwPixel's videos for EPIC but specifically either The Challenge or Would You Fall In Love With Me Again. I love their work so much and I dont feel like it gets enough credit. But regardless of what you choose I really look forward to the alternate animatics video.

Zora Brightwood

Fun Fact: Characters like Penelope and Ody have their own signature instruments that play their own signature motif. Ody has a nylon string guitar that can change into an electric when he's in battle, and Penelope has a viola. In past songs, when Ody is talking about Penelope or thinking about her, you can hear a viola being played. In the challenge, when Penelope thinks about Odysseus, you can hear the guitar.

Zora Brightwood

It would be cool to see Morgan Elijah and Mosco's reactions to the full live stream of Epic with the canon animatics and the cast's reenactments of the songs, but that's a long video to do, and YT prob be a major problem with that if they did that on YT.

Rupert Anderson Jr

Yes, the massacre of the suitors is the most understandable crash out in history.

Ashley Sotelo

God games by gigi is my favorite rendition of that song. Generally all of gigi's animatics are so good by far one of my favorite ones tied to this musical

Brisa Cutforth-Gonzalez

Idk if anyone has told you this but Ody didnt want to go to war originally. He actually pretended to be crazy trying to get out of it. But his son's life was on the line and he chose to save his son rather than keep up the act that he was crazy, even though it meant he had to go to war.

Brisa Cutforth-Gonzalez

Also, I highly recommend reacting to Neil Illustrators animatics. Especially Just a Man and 600 Strike (Originally this said God Games. I know you already reacted to that sorry.). If even only in you free time

Shellyse Bell

Yes. I also agreed with him choosing himself over his crew lol

Luna

Yes, I’d be with ody I have a godling OC that I’ve inserted into different fandoms and universes, one of which was this one, and she wiped the floor with the suitors

Katatonic-stranger

One of my favourite things about this animatic for the Odysseus song, other than that cheeky eye roll when he says no to open arms, is how it flips the line "All I hear are screams, every time I dare to close my eyes" around. When those screams were memories of all the comrades he failed to save, he really suffers from them. Then we get this song, and he actually pauses to close his eyes and really enjoy the sounds of screams coming from his enemies. It's like I can hear him saying that same line again, but now he's enjoying it, like "All I hear are screams 😈 every time I dare to close my eyes ☺️" Though it's not just that, a lot of the scenes flip older songs. He's the one finding intruders in his home, aiming for the torches, and refusing open arms. It's such a perfect example of how he's become the monster, and he enjoys it. (plus one of my favourite things people point out is how his wife is from sparta, so she probably loves him even more now than she already did. Poor Telemachus is gonna be hearing a whole lot of screams coming from the bedroom for quite a while, every time he tries to close his eyes 😂)

Katatonic-stranger

On the one hand, I loved seeing the epic cast get really hyped and dancing to the songs, plus Jorge being silly. But on the other... I really wasn't a fan of the animatics he chose to watch. Some were barely even animatics, they were more like text on screen. Thankfully Mosco actually ended up watching almost all my favourite animatics for this playthrough. The only ones I would have changed, would have been Anniflama's Ruthlessness and God Games, and Natzel's waiting (the way Penelope gets so pushy makes her look so powerful, and the way she asks "how long has it been?" when they're in bed is like she's asking if he remained loyal, and he tells her the last time he lay with a woman, was 20 years ago). Those are literally the only 3 I would have changed, and I really hope she watches them later.

Katatonic-stranger

Or Odysseus comes on and you're just suddenly full of energy and pumped, but always when you don't have anything to do with all that energy

Zora Brightwood

Fair. But all those were animatics that he asked animators to do for each saga. I think the canon ones for the Ithaca saga were some of the coolest ones tho.

Annieme

As I mentioned in previous reactions- there are 4 songs about monsters that their name is the song title: 1- Polyphemus 2- Scylla 3- Charybdis 4- Odysseus Also, i love Gigi’s God Games :3

Christopher Pinon

I just love the Odysseus song cause it’s a combination of of Scylla from the torches, mercy line that guy was trying to say reference to Poseidon and the arrows being shot in that weaponry room matches the beat of club cyclops did everytime he slain his troops.

Phoenix_mercury

One of my fave lines in song 3 is the Scylla line, scratches my brain so good!🤣

Phoenix_mercury

He didn't "choose to watch" them, he commissioned them specifically, also their was two animatics out of the whole series I was actually hoping for... Neither was used🤣🤦🤷🤷

Phoenix_mercury

You don't need to exclude htd, The challenge: hold them down

Phoenix_mercury

It also has Scylla throat, mutiny, lightning bolt

Edda

Yes

Edda

I feel a lot of grief that this is a situation he has been put in but *shrug emoji* dudes gotta die

BrightHeart

If you look back at past reactions, Mosco already reacted to Neals god Games. As well as also reacting to Neals Ruthlessness, Thunderbringer (both being the thumbnails of their respective saga.

BrightHeart

If you look back at past reactions, Mosco already reacted to a bunch of Neals animatics. such as god Games. As well as also reacting to Neals Ruthlessness, Thunderbringer (both being the thumbnails of their respective saga. I think the only ones that werent included were just a man and 600 strike.

Brisa Cutforth-Gonzalez

okay, God Games is good but I actually meant to type 600 Strike and not God Games. I have covid rn and typed that with a fever.but legit thank you so much for pointing out she had already reacted to god games because I would have lived blindly with that typo. And this is actually genuine. When I typed that I thought the title of 600 Strike was God Games because of the fever.

gnome_friend

No; awful actions do not justify more awful actions. It's cycles of endless revenge that started the Trojan War and most Greek tragedies. As Odysseus muses, "When a God comes down and makes a fleet drown... he [keeps] us in check so we must respect him and now no one dares to piss him off." That is what Poseidon does, and now Odysseus does the same. But ruling through fear does not transform violence into good life for a community; it just bottles that violence up so only the ruling class can openly express it. The slaughter of the suitors may help Penelope and Telemachus temporarily, but does nothing to change the overall culture into one with "a bit more empathy."

HeroNotFound

I really want you to watch Castlevania!!

TheCasualNerd

Yes, absolutely. Anyone there who took part in the hold em down scheming is dead. And interestingly, in terms of greek culture and divine law in their religion, Ody is divinely permitted to make that call amd slaughter them. Ancient Greeks had super strict rules about hospitality and thats why Penelope and Telemachus couldn't do anything to the suitors, as only the man of the house had the authority to do so without breaking the laws of hospitality. But when Ody returns, he has the right to repay the awful behavior of his guests with appropriate vengeance and this is fully allowed to do everything he did with no repercussions whatsoever

BrightEyes

No, I wouldn't have killed all of them granting them an easy way out. Ody gave in to his rage even though he is a king at the end of the day. If he had killed enough to have some left pummeled into submission he'd have a bunch of ruthless people at his disposal. Disposable scum can be quite usefull in stately affairs. They never would've be loyal but I'm certain Ody could outsmart and coerce them.

Yoshinatorsaurus

On the one hand, I totally understand Ody going postal on all the suitors. On the other hand, blind, murderous revenge is exactly what caused his voyage home to get thrown so off course and lose so much of his crew in the first place. It's honestly pretty tragic, and kinda feels like he learned nothing.

Deco the Artist

It's become a bit of a meme for the last song, so might as well say it. Odysseus: "I've left a trail of blood and bodies everywhere I went to get back to you." Penelope, who was originally from Sparta: "...That's hot."

Deco the Artist

And I think Odysseus understands this. That's why he tells Athena that a world with more empathy is "one [he'll] have to miss, for it's far beyond [his] years." Maybe, being Telemachus's new patron deity, she can teach the prince better things than she did for his dad, but Ody knows it's too late for him.

Tallulahbell

Yes Maybe because I’m from Belfast and currently live in Scotland. Not really people known for a lack of violent repercussions. The motto of Scotland is “Nemo me impure lacessit” which translates to “No one provokes me with impunity” or to put it in simpler terms “Come at me if you think you’re hard enough”.

Tintros

-First thing, Christmas specials! I'm sure there's a bunch from the US you haven't seen. (Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, Year without a Santa Claus, among my favorites) -Er... you *can* get socks that way.. but it's kinda... a "special interest" :\ -Yeah.. the suitors? Suuuuuck. But Odysseus is a nice ideal to aspire to.

Lukeey

Yes no second thought. Completely agree that they will do more evil if they get to live because a good person would not have thought those evil things in the first place

Julien Ocansey

Yes. They threatened my family, who are my home and my world. "They no longer have to wonder where their God is. Cause he's right here... and he is fresh out of mercy"- Kirito, SAO abridged

De’Angelo Enriquez

And during hold them down her instrument is ‘screaming’ during her part of the suitors’ plans

De’Angelo Enriquez

Yes. While I do not think that any government has the right to sentence anyone to death and that all murder, except as an immediate act of defense, should be punished by prison time. Both Odysseus and Poseidon were justified in their actions (disproportionate? Maybe) but I’d probably do the same thing. Heck, I’d probably bite someone for trying to rob my place of employment (I really want an excuse to bite someone with vicious intent).

Sarah Neely

YES. Odysseus the song is the ULTIMATE catharsis tbh. The culmination of all the boss music songs.

Rixec2

YES.

R H

to put this concisely: punitive justice is extremely fun, cathartic, and satisfying in fiction (i LOVE Odysseus as a song and character), and i’m not above taking satisfaction in the deaths of truly terrible people even in real life. but my real-world stance is in support of restorative justice, not punishment. the death penalty and forced sterilization are not tools of justice, they are tools of systemic violence that have most often been used against marginalized communities. sorry to be a bummer about it amongst all the righteous bloodlust, i guess. i enjoy your reactions a lot, and i don’t begrudge anyone enjoying seeing those guys get wrecked—i sure as hell do! but from a political standpoint some of that discussion had me wincing a bit.

Geordie Robinson

I mean I vote for time off as the infinite well of epic animatics will never run dry (though I'd also like u to see more...)

Vic Walker

Yeah I see what you are talking about. At the same time, I would love some justice to fall upon some terrible people IRL right now. For those, being punished by death is actually getting the easy way out, they deserve to stay in prison for many years and suffer for what they've done. (to be very clear, I'm talking about dictators and wanna-be, one I'm especially in mind while thinking about is one from my country - Brazil - that is in jail right now suffering for everything he did and tried to do, and I'm so very much happy about it) (otherwise I agree with being less punitive in prison and trying to reintegrate people in the society as much as possible)

Vic Walker

Plus if you add more about the context, that all the suitors are every men that were left behind during the war, for being too young to be a soldier, and even a few from close ally cities from Ithaca. So, without the 600 men that went for war, and without the suitors, Ithaca has almost no men left at all. That's a big problem to keep a city alive.

Tobias Fox-winkler

I think people that SA people intentionally without a doubt with sick intentions that won't change, SHOULD BE FUCKING PUBLICLY CRUCIFIED!! LETS GO NEW TESTAMENT ON THEIR ASSES!!!!

Amber Stone

every time I see the Odyssey I this is always my favorite scene

Obiwan Cornobi

If you really liked Epic then I can recommend Hadestown. It's based off of Greek myth as well, but based in an era reminiscent of the Great Depression. Let me know if I can help put together an animatic Playlist and stuff for you, if you're interested in reacting to that

Suplee215

Another late comment. An important note here is all the suitors are those who didnt go to war. Any respectable man of the island went to the Trojan war and died on the way back. So yea those left behind are horrible. And great seeing these reactions

Pan Boi

Yes, AND! I know I'm very late but Odysseus is so real for killing all those men for what they had done and planned to do. I 100% would do the same. I am a sobbing MESS watching this, the last song is so beautiful and it gives me chills each and every time I hear Penelope yell "only my husband knew that, so I guess that makes him you!" And then the immediate softness that follows... MY HEART. Even though he's changed so, so much, he is still the same man who built that bed, that whole palace, and fathered their child. And Telemachus being so nervous to meet his father?? Precious. He saw his father kill several men to protect him, saw a monster ravage through these horrible people... Realized that was his dad. And then seeing him immediately melt upon seeing Telemachus, his baby boy, seeing life shine through this beast of a man. Him being scared that he could never live up to his father, that maybe even his father would be disappointed in him for not being as strong... Only to be told, with some of his first words to his son, "I can only imagine the strength that lies in you." MY HEART IS SHATTERED ACROSS THE FLOOR. I'm just rambling at this point but I love this musical so much, my only regret is not listening to it sooner 😭
