This episode is so good in so many ways. The Bard Battle?! Oh god that is so cool! 🤩 Also, I appreciated they save the “What’s My Mother’s Name” moment for this and help us explain why Scanlan wanted to keep his distance this season. Sam really performed great here. 😭💜

2026-10-11 11:00 The reason that Scanlan was absent this season (minus this episode) AND that he didnt voice Taryon (beyond "it would sound too similar to Scanlan") is because Sam was in post Cancer surgery recovery when they recorded S4. He is fine now obviously, but a little background info on it

Yea the bard fight wasnt in the campaign. Most of the big cult members besides Deliah are added to the show.

So Mosco, the events of the campaign version of a Bard’s Lament actually took place right after Thordak’s defeat and Scanlan had the same valid crashout after Vox Machina dressed him in a nightgown and covered him in pudding while he was in a coma as a prank but Kaylee saw it and when Scanlan woke up he blew up and left. That made room for his second character Taryon Darrington. As for the Bard battle that is brand new to the show and as for its origins the crew always wanted to do a bard battle but it just never happened. They took the time to make it for the show and they got the amazing Tom Cardy to voice the Dark Bard. Overall this episode was a culmination of one of the most emotional scenes in VM (What’s my mother’s name) and the dream of CR to do a Bard battle
