"If you love something, set it free: if it returns to you, it will be yours forever."

Jared Bichler

Happy late Birthday! I didn't know

David G.

People already have opinions about this episode and I think lots of them miss the fact that Stolas and the Dom very clearly communicate extensively beforehand what's "on the table" and what isn't. The Dom even establishes that before they get started, he's going to check in that Stolas understands the communication. And after "Dirty Bird" ends the Dom brings Stolas some water and clearly is doing aftercare.

Tgriff02

Oh goody, goody, gumdrops. Been waiting for this!

BeastialMoon

Yeah "discourse" around this episode online is very much a case of "I can't believe I have to see some random teenager's opinion on the internet". Because all of the complaints have been not understanding that Stolas is spiraling, or not understanding BDSM culture and clutching their pearls at it. I've just chosen to ignore all of it and rewatch the eps with the Skittle Squad instead <3

Tgriff02

Yeah, the only bad actor in this scene is Stolas, who is clearly using kink as a form of SH and not interested in the rules or his safety (I also assume that he is relatively ignorant alot of the ettiquette around kink)

Phoenix_mercury

I've found it amusing all the people shocked/surprised when a blade is used when stolas lists in his kinks "knife play"

Jared Bichler

"Give it to me hard, let's go!" Please don't say that in this kind of scene; you'll attract unwanted attention.

Phoenix_mercury

Grabbed my comment from Elijah's video: While yes Stolas isn't entirely in a positive mindset him being properly introduced to bdsm is clearly at least *somewhat* cathartic now that he has an actual outlet(previously it was a shameful thing with his royal standing that had to be kept hidden etc) and he's *obviously* genuinely enjoying himself, loved this ep so much, and no I'm not pissed off/upset at Stolas either. Loona asked him this very ep is he and her dad are together, he clearly statees they're not. He's allowed to hook-up with people, everything went to shit because of timing 🤷 Stolas didn't have change to explain his new activities to blitzø who found out in a painful way Vs Stolas being able to sit him down and explain "hey, we're not together, I'm not looking for a relationship currently however I miss being touched but theirs too many emotions involved with our past currently so I've been enjoying casual hook-ups" yes blitzo would likely have still been hurt but nowhere near as much as finding out how he did, and no none of this means that blitzø isn't allowed to be hurt, it's understandable that he would be with the type of person he is🤷

Sweet N Savory Venom

I thought of it as more like Loona uses the app to go on a date with a guy, has him pay and then backs out from sex if she doesn't wanna bone him. But the free dinner was the main point.

Annieme

Omg. I’ve been quietly and patiently waiting for this reaction lol

David G.

While it's possible, I don't think we can judge with certainty that his intent is self harm related. I personally think based on the framing and scenes themselves that it isn't. After the moments where he's in pain, you see that followed by pleasure and release. He's thinking of Blitzo throughout it as well, as shown by the alternating framing between what Blitzo is doing and what Stolas is experiencing. In addition, throughout and after the song ends, Stolas clearly just had a *really* good time and is smiling/ laughing with the Dom.

Lando

Butterscotch This episodes is so sad. Blitzo is completely justified in EVERYTHING he is feeling yet I also feel for Stolas aside from him not telling Blitzo/ especially that horrific scene that happens when Stolas leaves Blitzo right in front of him. Yet it’s still tragic for Stolas because he is doing this not for a necessarily good reason as he wants to be punished for everything he did in S2…… the song lyrics for Dirty Bird are 😭😭😭

Phoenix_mercury

A fun note for anyone who doesn't know, the plant is real:

Alexandru Ulesan

Positive depiction of BDSM, in this economy??? It took me a while to be able to listen to those lyrics, but it finally clicked the Stolas is PUNISHING himself, literally at first, but also at the end by hurting Blitz. (Butterscotch. Is that hype thing for YT, cause I can't find it here)

Phoenix_mercury

Same, she's said before that she's good at ghosting 🤷 I could see her "just going to the toilet" then dipping lol

Phoenix_mercury

Exactly, I've seen a couple people assuming that because he's crying that he's doing it to make himself hurt in a negative way when it's not uncommon to cry during a scene for positive reasons, as a royal that was banished and now has the ability to truly explore his "unusual bed habits"(which he's now learning aren't as usual as he likely thought) in a safe and healthy way(Vs with blitzø and prior when it had to be hush hush because of his standing), this actual introduction to bdsm has to be so fking cathartic for him, and that's likely at least partially why he's crying, I'm curious how they'll go from here with blitzø and stolas with this addition(especially with how blitzø found out)

Tgriff02

You know what's even worse about the end? Pretty consistantly this season, everytime Blitzø tries to interact, Stolas has an exasporated demeanor. He literally doesn't have the energy or spoons to him. But When Blitzø got back from the mission, Stolas was actually engaging with the conversation a little bit. The time apart, plus the emotional release of the hook-ups seemed to be working; I wonder, if Stolas hadn't been on his way out for the evening, he might have been willing to open up and actually talk a bit about what's going on in his head. But instead, he got dealt another blow by having to see Blitzø hurt by his actions.

Tgriff02

Also, Butterscotch.

Taigan

I’ve been hyping some of your videos on YouTube, when I think of it. (butterscotch)

sophizilla

i think because she said she uses it to get free food and not just food i think implies she does it for fun not cuz she needs to thats just what i think tho

Tristan Haller

I base the idea that he's using this as self-harm on the lyrics of Dirty Bird focusing on 'getting what he deserves', and that he has 'earned no love', which resonates with several self-loathing comments he's been making. That doesn't mean the BDSM was inherently wrong, or that he wasn't also feeling cathartic relief, but our boy is definitely not in a great headspace, even if he was more cheerful before the argument with Blitzo.

matthew james Stromberg

People forget that stolas probably never had sex with anyone but his wife and they both HATED IT so when blitz came in and introduced him to a new form of romance it just opened the floodgates this is ALL new to him and he wants to explore it but its all healthy and the people compaining is getting old

Shay

Yeah, like the person above me said, the fact he is using it as self harm comes from listening to the lyrics and Stolas' actual feelings in it (as well as in his end credit song "Rope", which doubles down on the fact that it is to hurt himself), it isn't at all related to the bdsm itself.

Shay

The doms are certainly healthy, Stolas however isn't; he is using it to harm himself rather than for fun, which is very sad. (But yes, all the freaking pearl clutching I've been seeing is exhausting)

Shay

Btw, the amazing first Dom has an official name! We love Ricardo, great dom right there🥰 (Sidenote: my personal favorite thing in the Dirty Bird sequence is the paralleling of Blitz and the kind dom during the lyrics "treat me the way that I deserve"; it's such great way to show the difference in mindset of Stolas thinking he deserves to be treated terrible while he's actually being treated with incredible consideration by both men)

David G.

I'll have to give Rope another listen. (Sincerely) Thank you everyone for your insights above. All that said, I really hope that the *primary* motivator isn't Stolas harming himself because it changes the scene from being asserting control over previous trauma and loss and instead about punishing himself alone (and also means he violated the trust of those in the Safeword community). After having considered what you've said it's very likely a *secondary* or even subconscious motivation while attempting to process hings that he went though (abduction, shame, guilt, and near death experiences).

David G.

This adds a layer to the episode title too- Blitzo wants to find Stolas a Gympie-Gympie and Stolas is being a Gimpy Gimpy.

Patneu

And it's even worse than described in the show, because the toxic spikes are almost impossible to remove and you don't even have to touch the plant because it's constantly shedding the spikes for you to just run into or breathe in. So, in a sense, this plant literally hurts just to be around and causes pain that takes ages to subside if ever, which sounds like a metaphor for how Blitzø and Stolas are feeling about each other.

Patneu

Yeah, Loona was definitely not implying sex work here, but just going on "dates" with guys she's not actually interested in for free food.

Phoenix_mercury

yeah theirs def *reclamation* happening, its similar to what fizz said after being abducted with blitzo about what happened giving him a bunch of things he wanted to try, ngl i was so happy at seeing him letting himself cry and release everything hes feeling, going from a royal whos wants/desires were shameful and to be hidden/kept secret to learning all of this and being *actively* encouraged to enjoy himself and all he wants, uuugh my feels!

Phoenix_mercury

also no known cure + flare ups can happen weeks, months or even years later

Ryan

Gympie-Gympie, aka, dendrocnide moroides, reputed to be the most venomous plant in Australia, if not the world. Happy belated birthday; if Laika had released Wildwood one week earlier it would have been the perfect birthday gift! Millie is out here living her best life in Australia. "All this making life makes me want to be taking life!" Cutting backing and forth with ropes, the bird roasting over the spit, Millie slaughtering magpies... it's just dripping symbolism. But remember, the first, second, and third rule of animation is "get reference." And it would count as a business expense... the animators' taxes are going to be interesting next year. But if they're kicking us this hard in the feels so early in the season... the rest of the season is going to be brutal.

Lichen

I’m definitely a lil worried that Stolas, tho clearly enjoying several positive experiences with good doms, might not be exercising discernment. I got a bad vibe from the guy he left with, and I fear Stolas might end up having to confront his kidnapping trauma more head on than anyone signed up for As for Blitzø, I’m so fucking curious what’s going on with that lil eye change. I’ve suspected that there’s something bigger in store for him; the prevalence of the eye motif with him that we also see throughout Hazbin is constantly coming up. I wonder if the tables are going to fully turn and have season 4 involve Blitzø coming to terms with his own shift in stature.

RaisedEyebrow

I think Loona juat uses the apps to get food in return for a date... but that's just my headcanon, and I could be COMPLETELY wrong.

Albedo12

Either that or its a findom thing, but I don't think that's her vibe.

SauceyRed

44:30 TIL there are different types of rainforests

Suplee215

I don't think hes using it for that. He is using it to punish himself but thats not mutually exclusive from using not for fun. The after care scene shows he did enjoy it. This can be a healthy way to deal with feelings of no self worth and needing to be punished A controlled environment to role play those feelings and get them out.or process them

Suplee215

Yes hype is a youtube feature

Suplee215

I thibk a lot of this is people don't know that bdsm can have therapeutic type effects. The lyrics depict a problematic mindset but these scenes provide a perfect way to deal with that mindset. It can be a way for stolas to role play the phnishment he thinks he needs out in a safe way as he works on his mental state both during and outside the play. Qnd it may still be a form of self harm but it isnt necessarily it. It depends on if hea refusing to safe word or not. I seen some reasin why people think he is but I think his aftercare scene shows otherwise

Lilac Chimera

Someone on the team said that the red dom is named Ricardo! He really does seem like a great guy

Angelus Lupus

BUTTERSCOTCH! And I'm gonna get on the app right now!

Geass

Loona never said she slept with the guy. She said she used it to get free food. She has to give him her time, but not her body. They likely both have the option to back out if they aren't clicking. This was in a restaurant, not his place. Granted, this is hell, so maybe they have rooms in the back for couples.

The Wolf of Chaos

Happy late birthday, girl! Hope it was a good one!

Shawn Berg

Gympy Gympy is a deadly plant that if you touch it, it can be very lethal

Someday Sera

somebody on morgan's post of the episode pointed out that the actual problem may be more related to stolas using sex to cope with his guilt and trauma by embracing it and reliving it, rather than working through it with like...therapy. The sex situation itself could be perfectly safe, but his reasons for diving into it are self destructive from a mental health standpoint.

Lichen

Oh, I absolutely agree 100%! I made that comment before the last batch of eps; with the new directions the story is taking, I don’t think my previous concern is going to be a factor. I was really pleased with the showcasing of SSC BDSM practices; the first dom Stolas saw was fantastic representation imo! I was definitely worried about Stolas’ headspace and where that might lead him rather than the nature of the acts itself.

FuzzBird

I thought the animation at the start of this episode looked different too. It reminded me of 90s cartoon network lol Being a bird lover, your seagul story intrigued me so I googled it. This is what it said: "A bare head or receding hairline might catch the sun or stand out, and the highest point of a person (the head) is simply the closest target when the bird dives down to warn or strike an intruder." Wee shits attracted to shiny bald heads 😆

ShadeWolf

We got mocking birds around me that will dove bomb you.
