I'm so loving this series so far, and your reactions have been great. Thanks for the time and energy when you have so much going on.

Cue the meme of that guy pointing to the incoming sandstorm: "here come the Korra haters saying they were right all along!"

So, my current theory: We saw towards the end of LoK that they were begining to experiment with spirit energy. They had the weapons that fed on the spirit vines from Republic City. I think they continued to persue that line of research, exploiting spirits and the spirit realm. This led to the spirits, or perhaps the spirit world itself becoming enraged at the blatant exploitation. Korra tried to stop it, failed, and was forced to take drastic measures to prevent the complete destruction of both worlds. In the aftermath, the 7 havens were established, using that same tech (at least in Ellora) to tap the planet's chakra points. This allowed the havens (or at least Elorra) to provide a stable place to live, but now we are seeing the consequences. 250 odd years of people's fear and anxiety over the avater returning and living conditions has been building up inside the root chakra, and is now bleeding out. Similar to a cyst or boil draining infection. The root chakra is blocked by fear, and the anomaly seems to react to fear. Although it interacts differently with the avatars, because they are the one's who can cleanse it.

2026-10-25 09:00 I'm pretty sure those lockers were for the changing room of a Pro-Bending stadium, that was one of their safty helmets that they blinded Jae with by putting it on backwards.

Pretty sure that pink energy was spirit energy. Kuriva weaponized it in book 4 of korra. I cannot tell if Korra was trying to get rid of those or use the energy to fight whatever she was fighting. Could be a situation pass the godzilla threshold where no amount of property damage or casualties is worse than the enemy winning.

Also I'm pretty sure that structure that Pavi and Jae met in was a train station considering it's an domed structure with Korra's image pastered on a Kiosk and a Bench as advertisments.

The play in the first episode said every haven found their own way to survive. I think the brigade and military like culture is Ellora's way. New Ba Sa Sang is probably built on the ruins of the old city and embraces uses their knowledge of history. The crumbling probably refers to how old it is.

Just wanted to point out that the city in the Korra flashback was Republic City, a prominent location in the Legend of Korra.

Loved the reaction as always! This episode made me feel like Korra definitely had a reason for her actions. Biggest standout frame is her face before she jumps off that cliff to Republic City. She either has reservations or knows the backlash she will receive, but has to do it anyways. I definitely feel like it's connected to the spirit energy being a power source because when Kuvira messed with that in Book 4 of TLOK, it threw everything out of balance and was enough power to create a new spirit portal. If she released that much... cataclysm. Seems like humanity might have abused its power, thrown things out of balance, and Korra had to intervene in whatever way she could.

So like, obviously we next to no context for any of what happened, but it's pretty clear the mystery isn't if Korra turned evil (she didn't) but what made her have to make the choices she did to most likely save what she could of the world. Lot of theories rolling around but idk. The pink energy looks like Spirit Energy, like from Kuvira's mech canon or even Vaatu's energy beams. Korra and Asami having betrothal necklaces makes me so beyond happy. Been waiting twelve years for this day dude. Also love that while it looks like Asami's has a traditional water symbol, Korra's looks like the spirit portal, like the one they walked into at the end of LOK. Let's go!!!! They're so cute!!!! God I want answers already!!!!

I’m beginning to think maybe Korra *did* cause the Cataclysm. I think they were doing something with Spirit energy and she needed to stop it. But she was in the Avatar State in the flashback. And most of the times that happened in the series, it was because she was *angry* So here’s what I’m afraid of: What if something happened to Asami? Because that’s a situation where I can totally picture Korra saying “fuck consequences” and burning down the world.

Phoenix_mercury

Yup, theirs fire ferret stuff around the room(a flier near the foreground at one point)

Lando

Hey Mosco, so the city Korra was freeing spirit energy from (….. you could also say attacking I guess) was Republic City. We know this because you can see the spirit portal Korra opened in the finale along with the giant statue of Aang in the bay. Also yeah I guess based on my comment you can see that I def think Korra was stopping a corporation from harvesting spirit energy which was likely damaging the Spirit world. It’s so clear on Korra’s face she is both sad yet determined

Ross Jennings

My theory is that Korra did cause the Cataclysm, but only because she needed to in order to prevent something worse, sort of like a Project Zero Dawn situation. Based on Mosco's theory, I'm now guessing that it was something like: spirit energy technology became widespread to the point that there were pipes carrying spirit energy everywhere, like the electric grid in our world. But it turned out that something about the production of spirit energy was creating a major imbalance with the spirits, and Korra discovered at the last minute that it would lead to the end of the world, and the only way to stop it was to rip out all the spirit energy pipes.

Raine

I love the fact that Ba Sing Se is STILL around, they just added "New" to it😂 this city is truly indestructible 😂

Iago24

I'm getting the impression that there was a Final Fantasy VII style scenario going on. The industrial world had started to harvesting spiritual energy of the planet, throwing the spirit world out of balance. It would have most likely led to a total apocalypse and destruction of all life if Korra hadn't put a stop to it.

Omegon

Jae is right though. The faceless are selfish and are hurting everyone in Ellora, even their loved ones. With great power comes great responsibility.

Adrian Lee

PRO BENDING HELMET AND LOCKER ROOM. THEY'RE AT THE PRO BENDING ARENA

Jared Bichler

(Twins jump into hole) Jae: Wait, wait! Jae, did you honestly think for two seconds they weren't going to do that?

Jared Bichler

The twins blind Jae with an old pro bending helmet.

Jared Bichler

Pavi: Avatar Korra. Me: In the flesh! Well... sorta.

Jared Bichler

If all this red stuff is spirit energy, maybe they were building on Varrik's research. So the end of the world is Varrik's fault! That does make more sense.

Jared Bichler

Jae: In the name of Ellora, I arrest you! Wait, we're going to take the Queen? Wouldn't it be easier to give the Faceless an invitation?

Jack Middleton

The theory I'm behind is humans started to harness spirit energy, which is why we don't see any vines in Republic City. I can't see Asami doing this, so it likely only started to happen after her death. Korra tries to stop it via normal means, but people don't want to give up their new convenient energy source, even if it kills all the spirits. Korra uses force and something then happens to cause the cataclysm. But if the alternative was no more spirit energy it had to happen, since that means no Avatar, no bending and no afterlife/reincarnation.

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah we go from korra flying towards a(relatively normal looking compared to later) RC then cut to RC on fire and chaos ensuing as korra metal bend tears out/down the pipes, wtf happened between those two scenes?!

Jared Bichler

Korra is so working that silver, by the way.

Jared Bichler

Maybe that red stuff is like a spirit volcano, and whatever Korra did helped relieve some pressure.

ArthurianMyst

A lot of people are completely forgetting the final part of Korra with Kuvira and the Earth Empire Weaponizing "Spirit Energy" heck the Mech's Canon blasts were the same color...

Jared Bichler

Is it just me, or has Republic City lost its spirit vines since we last saw it?
