been waiting for this one, hamilton scheme was great

JoR

I was secretly getting worried in a morbid way when the episode didn't come earlier. lol

John Hieronymus

Want to jump in to say that Hogeland’s “autumn of the black snake” is one of the most important and interesting and frankly eye opening histories of America I have read and the Hamilton scheme is great but should be read with his other works because Hamilton frankly has nothing on Washington as a creepy authoritarian out to kill his way to an empire.

Kyle Erickson

Amazing coincidence: I have been recently working my way through the Hogeland-verse to win an argument about Hamilton (makes me sound more insufferable than I am). Seriously if anyone’s on the fence, the man writes great books. I really love Autumn of the Black Snake

My problem with Trump is that he humiliates and infuriates the despicable and evil American political class (of both parties), but he himself is just as bad, and in most areas doesn't even represent a break with their policies. There really is not much worth rooting for in the United States.

AG

Ok, bought the hamilton scheme since you guys said everyone should read it.

T

Here in Deep Blue Sonoma County there were exponentially more Trump signs than in 2016/2020

blazed uncle

Would be fun if someone rewrote the lyrics in Hamilton to tell this narrative but left the music, costuming, and choreography exactly the same

blazed uncle

I guess in practice that would get you sued into oblivion

Hans Anders

Hamilton as the finance genius who built the US empire as we know it. I see lots of reasons for liberals to like him.

William

There wasn’t any Trump-Vance signs because that wasn’t the ticket, MORON lol just kidding. I know what you meant

Maybe you could do the story of Tadeusz Kościuszko instead; he was a pretty cool guy.

Liberals like the musical because it portrays Hamilton as a perfect heroic demigod who opposed slavery and makes immigrants look good. It's popular because it revamps the mythology of the Founding Fathers to suit modern sensibilities while still retaining all the absurd fictions about how these guys were saintly ubermenschen, instead of a gaggle of horny syphilitic back-biting hypocritical rich bastards (with some notable exceptions) who built the white supremacist foundation of the American empire despite their occasional lip service to human rights.

Hans Anders

That’s the point. Liberal aesthetics mask liberal reality. Hamilton embodies liberal reality, the musical embodies todays liberal aesthetics.

Christopher Small

Nice history episode. I do have to admit that I was the sort of liberal drawn to Hamilton when I was in High School. It wasn't for any of the reasons that people glommed onto him with the musical more than a decades later, but rather because of what you guys alluded to in the episode of Hamilton as a state builder. Because in a sense what his American System was was what in 20th century parlance we would call a developmental state, a centralizing apparatus that sees state capacity and industrial organization as necessary compliments. It was 200 years ago, of course, so considerations of class interest and so forth were vastly different, but at the same time you can also see how it was the genus of the New Deal or John Kenneth Galbraith style institutionalism where an organized state atop a corporate infrastructure was supposed to lead social progress. And seconding Washington as one of the funniest founding fathers. The way I was told to look at him is that he was like a guy who'd read Dale Carnegie and find it profound. Though, to be fair, when you're forming an army or political system, getting everyone on the same etiquette manual can be pretty important

Not the Hamilton (musical) slander again! The man can certainly do with some more. I can’t believe people not liking the musical though. Worth it for the sheer energy and fun factor. There’s definitely enough hints of the truth to make it still interesting to people who don’t hate history.

Micah

Really excellent episode, I really like listening to Hogeland speak, he sounds like a young Nick Nolte.

CR

Why do you keep perpetuating this bullshit that Joe Biden has done anything progressive? He’s a right wing piece of shit and has done everything in his power for his entire adult life to make the world worse.

CR

Minorities singing and dancing about how awesome some white slaveowners were would be called a minstrel show under any other circumstances by you dimwits.

CR

The songs are also the most offensive thing to ever happen to the hip hop songs Miranda butchered. He didn’t get stuffed into garbage cans often enough in high school. They are not just bad but outright offensive to the genre and I’m sorry you’re too stupid or sheltered or both to see it.

CR

He’s the half-wit emperor pointing out that he isn’t wearing clothes.

Doug Cartel

He's progressive in the old sense of the word, when progress was defined as chopping someones balls off for failing an IQ test

Doug Cartel

It was really funny when the Hamilton guys tried to stick it to Pence by starting in front of him going "we're really scared of you!". Just the most lib-brained nerd move possible. Didnt even spit on him.

Arielle Curtin

Not agreeing with Mark that Biden said to Ukraine: “we can get you a better deal with Russia.” Ukraine was in a Civil War: the west against the rest (native Russian ethnics). And the US saw this as an opportunity to break and loot Russia. They sure as heck FAFO’d!

Tanner Maddox

Speaking of debt, I highly recommend the book “Debt: The First 5000 Years” by David Graeber

Keanu

Harding was a very corrupt, terrible president.

JoR

I don't know, did the west "fuck around and find out"? Seems like the west made out like proverbial bandits. The defense industry got justification for the next 3 decades, NATO was "revitalized", and the only guys dying are Ukranians and Russians.

Kevin Walsh

The war, or rather the resultant refugee crisis and sanctions on Russian oil, has been pretty bad for the economies of most European countries. This doesn't have much impact on the people making the decisions, of course.

RLD

Can anyone identify the Wallace Stevens essay or poem about the “actuarial man” that John mentions? No googling with the quoted phrase surfaces it.

Brendan O

Hamilton Scheme is great. Since TV/movie adaptation challenges were mentioned in the interview -- some stuff in here would be fantastic to see in a crime or political thriller sort of thing. Like, just the colorful paragraph on the Lee (?) brothers trying to chase down Robert Morris' corrupt gun-running smuggling empire, while his plans are dashed by his drunk brother's incompetence around dramatic overseas meetings in Versailles
