A brief "emergency episode" on Israel's latest war on Palestinians and Gaza, trying to make sense of Israel's gruesome strategy, such as there is any; if we're seeing a cracking of Israel's propaganda Iron Dome, which has snuffed criticism of Israel in the West for decades now; and finally we discuss the hardware side — Hamas rockets & missiles, and Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system.

Listening to this now and depressing to hear you ponder about what Israel's goal is on the question of Palestine. I supposed we know now.

Timely content, thanks for putting this out

The footage of Iron Dome self-intercepting really grabbed my attention. I guess in spite of all the evidence to the contrary I actually thought it wouldn’t have flaws like that.

In, I think it was 2014, I was ambushed in the mall by an Israeli man selling Dead Sea related skincare products. He immediately started polishing my fingernail with some kind of abrasive pad and trying to sell me stuff. He said something like "It's from Israel, have you ever heard of it?" and to this day I regret not withdrawing my finger indignantly and saying "I BELIEVE YOU MEAN OCCUPIED PALESTINE." My fingernail was really smooth for a week, for what it's worth.

Its interesting that the complete opposite to what is happening in America is happening in Europe. I live in Sweden. All my life, Palestine was the epitomised victim. Pro-Israeli sentiment was widely frowned upon as heresy. Now, most mainstream politicians are talking about Israels "right to defend itself", the evils of Palestinian Islamists, etc. Its apparent that we have the same trend elsewhere in Europe - certainly in France (see the weird ongoing debate about what they call "islamo-leftism"). Perhaps calling Corbyn an antisemite was basically a subtle way of calling him an Islamic shill. Following all the recent terrorist attacks in Western Europe, lots of people simply like the idea of flattening Arab cities, while also fully sympathising with the Israeli perspective. Its all turning very sectarian... I think "the Islamic issue" is much more central to our politics these days; and much less abstract than in the US. Pro-Israeli sentiment feeds into this overall dislike of Muslims, since Muslim Europeans have turned Palestine into one of their most important rallying cries. Those who are part of (or want to flirt with) the anti-Muslim crowd dont seem to care much about the actual conflict in Palestine, but use it as a subtle way of signalling their more localised (sectarian) loyalties.

Kind of a minor point. But if anything the British medias attempt to smear Corbyn as an anti-semite proved how weak pro-Israeli propaganda is becoming. I'm from the "red wall" area in the North of England, the region in which Corbyn's Labour were almost completely wiped out despite historically dominating these traditionally working class Labour heartlands. I didn't know a single person who brought up or took issue with Corbyn's alleged anti-semitism, if anything people around here are deeply distrustful of mainstream media narratives and saw right through the anti-semitism allegations for the bullshit that they clearly were. Working class traditional Labour voters disliked Corbyn due to his U-turn on supporting the outcome of the Brexit referendum, his betrayal of his lifelong Euroscepticism, and also his clear and obvious weakness as a leader. If the man couldn't control his own party how could anyone honestly expect him to run the country? The British left like to focus on the Media being anti Corbyn to excuse their own policy failures and inability to step up to the task of leading a popular movement. If you blame everything on the Zionist media you don't have to take responsibility for your own inadequacies. The anti-semitism allegations didn't destroy Corbyn, just like the misogyny allegations against Trump didn't destroy him. Normal people are largely tuned off to that kind of mud slinging, whatever truth is behind them. Corbyn has noone to blame but himself, he wasn't up to the task, the wider left will continue to lose until it accepts their own inadequacies and works on them.

Because I’m obsessed with apocalypses, I’ve read several Christian Fundamentalist apocalyptic Rapture novels. They cast gay people and hippies as villains of course, but they also ALWAYS have drive-bys at Palestinians. It’s like Chuck Norris’ Delta Force or that Schwarznegger “True Lies” movie 24/7: Palestinians are universally depicted as anti-Semitic monsters. I remember one book that has a drawn out scene of Palestinians torturing a guy, and they only don’t kill him because his fellow prisoners able to convince them he’s not Jewish. This is absolutely typical fundamentalist stuff.

Don't wish to derail the thread but the more I thought about your comment the more I got a queasy feeling in my gut. After the referendum Corbyn was more than happy to negotiate a Brexit deal, it was Keir Starmer and Alun Johnson who led the revolt against his position and forced Labour to adopt the insane "second referendum" pledge. The idea it was Corbyn who wanted this was cooked up by, you've guessed it, the British press - which is ironic given your contention that they played no part in his character assassination. Secondly, Corbyn's success in 2017 was after there'd been two leadership challenges, and his control of the party was much looser than it would be in 2018-19, so your statement that voters punished him for his (lack of) control of the party is, just like your other claim, bullshit. And finally, I've never in all my life heard anybody on the Left refer to the British press as the "Zionist media", and if I did I'd have a word. The only time this phrase gets used is in attempts to smear the Left as anti-semitic, but I'll leave it to others reading this to decide what your motivations are.

Did you guys just delete my comment? And if so, why?

Thanks for the post. Found it informative and thoughtful as always, but was a little disappointed by your focus on Christian eschatology as a reason for Evangelical support for Israel. There may be some slight truth to it, but it's so incredibly overstated. It's more like what John always says about sects in Northern Ireland, these people don't necessarily go to church. It would be a mistake to make a judgement on the mentality of American evangelicals where you take their faith as genuine. Trump proved that. Evangelical support of Israel is simple. Israel is viewed as us and an arab state is viewed as them. It's colonizers and the colonized. And no amount of brutality from Israel will dissuade them from their support, because they LIKE the brutality. It's Israel doing what needs to be done. What we should have done but didn't do in Iraq in their minds. It's the same reason why Hindu nationalists support Israel. The other day on twitter I found a staunchly pro Israel account that had a picture of Ronald Reagan as their avatar, and their location set as Northern Ireland. That tells you more about why Evangelicals support Israel than any close reading of the bible could ever do.

Anton Furgeson

I think there is a deep relationship between brutality and eschatology. The appeal of fundie eschatology has nothing to do though with attending church, but as an aesthetically pleasing alternative to vulgar nihilism. This nihilism though embraces the redemptive power of naked brutality as its engine of attracting and retaining adherents. There's got to be a whole lotta murdering goin on to whittle 8B down to the 144K blessed souls saved by grace.

One thing to keep in mind is the role Israel plays for the US. It gives Israel billions to buy weapons to ensure US hegemony in the Middle east. Thinking this latest flareup will endanger that 'aid' is silly. The Israelis are the US police force to keep those unruly Arabs in their place.

Ander Pierce

Derek Chauvin was trained in Israel. Or was that just all his cop buddies? Is it anti-semitism to say so?

Ander Pierce

Gay and pregnant and weeping for Israel? xD What an idiot. Weep for the woman with the dead infant, not the Israelis making the corpses

Politics aside, Bari Weiss is an astonishingly dumb person. The NYT and WSJ should be ashamed that they ever hired her in the first place.

Mark Ames

Maybe you're right, but it's not my experience. Unlike N Ireland Christian sects, US Evangelicals *do* go to church and *do* quote select Scripture. That may be changing lately, but at least until a decade ago, church-going & Scripture-quoting has been one of the big differences that distinguishes Evangelicals from the rest of the Christian branches in the US (and outside the US).

Mark Ames

No? What happened?

Bart Peeters

must have been a glitch then - anyway, I had some remarks but the next session with Max answered most of them :)
