I know topical/anniversary topics are potentially cheesy. And it's probably a topic you both are sick of. But could we get a segment or even a 20 minute discussion on the JFK assassination? Not necessarily the assassination itself, but more on the immediate aftermath, how John felt/witnessed it, etc. Maybe it's nor worth it, since we do so much American content already. But since it was the quintessential moment for Americans of that generation (like 9/11 is today), so maybe it'll add perspective for an important moment.

Something that keeps sticking in my craw: there’s a world leader more vulnerable to assassination than Zelensky, and that’s Netanyahu. Think about it: who benefits from Netanyahu being in power now? Certainly not the Palestinians. The Israeli public would pick Bibi over Hamas but not over syphilis. His opposition hates the guy; his coalition partners have to know he’s more trouble than he’s worth. He’s only out of jail right now because he’s actively engaging in outright genocide. His only supporters right now are the US security establishment and American Jewish leaders, and both can accept someone else running the show.

Huzzah for our peripatetic podcaster finally finding his roost!!!

John and Mark- I am continually impressed and appreciative of your ability to find aspects of the Civil War that are little known (e.g. Count Gurowski, etc.) but whose discussion and exploration add greatly to our understanding of the conflict. Peter's diary just got placed on my reading list. I know it has been done to death, but I look forward to your take on Lee's anabasis from Richmond. Tragic in the conventional sense of the word, but also tragic in the deaths incurred in what everyone knew was a completely and utterly lost cause. Congratulations on the new home, John! Have a loo at the first pages of K. Zuckmayer's autobiography, "A Part of Myself," where he speaks of home and where it is. I hope your new home is as wonderful as his Weissmuhl was to him. Jon P.

Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin, if that’s the right gnomic Gaelicism for a new house. Llongyfarchiadau, John.

All credit to Ames and Dolan, but I think the bigger problem is too many historians being either bad at their jobs or outright sympathetic to the slavers. Or both. I've lived in (northern) Virginia most of my life, I've toured a lot of battlefields and museums, and this RWN series is far more informative on most Civil War-related subjects than anything I ever saw. There's a lot of things that apparently just aren't talked about, even when they come from sources like Mark Twain that are theoretically part of the Anglo canon. I honestly feel like a big part of the problem is that academics refuse to teach anything that might be entertaining. And if they have to cover a topic with some inherent humor or excitement, they do their best to render it into a form that's completely sterile and lifeless. I don't know if it's some weird prudishness, or them just being the kind of people who despise fun, but it makes them actually rather useless for providing a decent education on anything.

Everything you say about Borat is true… but I gotta say that even Asad Abukhalil “angryarab dot blogspot” gave it a good review when it came out (he joke-apologized for liking it: IIRC “I have to admit I found Borat very funny… yes yes… I know”). The parts that have aged best I guess are when the Borat character gives USAans a license to reveal our awfulness (“Borat, I wish we could treat women the way you do in your country!”) Of course I doubt Abukhalil would give Sacha Baron Cohen the benefit of the doubt 15 years later after the guy has come out as a massive Israel fan and made 2 specifically anti-Arab and Arab-villain movies. Sometimes the 2000s seems farther away in time than the 1960s

I can hear a different level of energy in John's voice, now that he finally has a place to call home. This is a great change. Congrats on settling down near a Mediterranean beach after all these years of vagrancy!
