Being a reviewer of many things like watches, knives, MTs, and guns has given me an insight to marketing. Oh yeah, I also have a degree in Advertising and all the psychology behind consumer mindset too. Product placement exists in the mind of the consumer and it doesn't really matter if it's reality or not. They just have to believe it is. Slick ad campaigns can be very effective at this. Sometimes, like luxury watches for instance, you can convince people to pay $10,000 for an item that cost $87.50 to manufacture.

The same dynamic has happened with "precision rifles."   For instance guys have been convinced that spending 3K on  precision bolt action rifle is A OK in fact "required." It ain't.  Many $400 guns tested here in TNP out shoot them and sometimes even rank better in SAWC. Enter the Kimber mountain rifles, the the 84M Adirondack model being the representative.  It's focus is indeed on mountain hunting; it's not a tactical rifle. As such It's extremely light...about the weight of a .22 rifle.  We loved that! But they're also around $1600. We didn't love that. But for that cost they'll promise 1 MOA, exceptional durability, and super lightness. Let's test all of that.

Come on into the Bunker for the results. Remember TNP is value oriented in all the gear recommendations so this rifle will have to perform to a very high level to be rec'd. Does the 84M perform up to expectations?  Here I'll crack open the mystique and again function as your consumer advocate.

Kimber 84 Mountain Rifles: Exercise in Overpricing?

There once was a man, he had lots of fans, his wallet was limber so he sprung for a Kimber, the rifle he shot but a value it was not, on to Gunbroker it went, for the money to be respent on a 2021 Yamaha 700 Tenere.

Gilbert Cuzdey Jr

Dang my Ruger American will print sub moa groups with 177gr gold medal match and it's way cheaper.

Moe Mansour

Great review! Only place on face tube I can hear honest criticism about a product.

Pedro

I’ve always found kimber to be too much $$ for what it brings. Good product but very much a designer name.

Hunt in the ADK and Northern New England... last buck I took in Vermont was after tracking thru snow for about 2 miles, at 20 yards with a Marlin TSBL with the stock Skinner sights. Up here, a "long" shot is 100 yards. Your money, 2nd cool (I run a Steyr Scout, so I get it..) etc but the Adirondack moniker never made any sense to me, even after handling a few. Guessing Sitka gets a pretty licensing fee too. Thanks.

What?! The Barrett is fake!!! You just shot down my hopes and dreams Nutn! I live in the S.O.Z. I was hoping you could review it and I could live vicariously through you on that review. Sigh. Still love you Nutn.

Kimber, how much of the name are we paying for there. I have always thought that Kimber was more expensive than what you are actually getting. Please don't get me wrong, they are a good house, and have made some quality firearms in the past, but I would not put them up there with Steyr, that have produce many amazing production rifles. Kimber just is not my go to when it comes to a rifle (Hunting or otherwise). I would also note that I don't believe there is a single rifle they offer under $1,000 at current. I'm sure there is one that could be had for less on the streets, but I'm looking at their site and don't see one MSRP under a K. If I were to choose a light weight "Mountain" gun, I'd probably select, or at least try, the Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic Compact. It comes in at 6.5lb, with a 20" barrel (If I were looking for it to be light weight) If I were to look for an accuracy based rifle, I'd select the Bergara B-14 Ridge. (The HMR is just a little to heavy to lug up the side of a mountain. I know as I have one) And with the same amount of money as it took to just get the Kimber M84 actioned rifle, I would also be able to get a sling, a nice optic and rent a horse/mule. lol

Racing Psychosis

Years ago I would look at Kimber's and think they were cool, may have been decade or two ago. Nowadays, I look at them and spit on their overpriced name. I've seen a lot of their shit owned by buddies that just does not work. I'm kind of glad they were out of my price range back then.

My Ruger American Predator .308 with a 18” threaded barrel in the factory stock weighs just 6lbs. It has an adjustable trigger and shoots 1 MOA. $300 retail. Why would I buy something like this Kimber?

steve garrett

a few things there. kimbers are mini clones of the pre 64 model 70 winchesters. The machining to make a CRF action is more expensive than tube style remington 700's the wing safety I actually like because it physically block the firing pin. locks the bolt OR allows the gun to be unloaded with the safety on (middle posisiton) as for the pricing, IMO they are not going to sell twice as many at $800. They are a limited production gun, the people that want a gun like that, will fork out the money. overpriced. yeah a little. but these are made differently than a ruger american or a savage. kimber knows their buyer, your run of the mill hunter isn't going in to buy a kimber, they generally know what they are and want them. bolt action rifles have went through a evolution over the last 10 years. people want value bolt actions, savage, axis, ruger american, remington 783, etc. IMO the bolt action market is pretty tuff anyways because there are just so many older used guns that never wear out. I personally haven't been a kimber fan, but I understand those that are. I never thought they shot particularly good. but they are rightfully a higher end gun. I am surprised the military doesn't use these for special missions, that a very light rifle would be really nice to have.

steve garrett

oh one last thing, I would LOVE to see if a can makes a difference in accuracy. in the last year, I have threaded pretty much everything I have. ALL of the bolt guns shoot quite a bit better suppressed now. the suppressors perhaps best benefit on these higher recoiling guns is recoil reduction. and I mean a LOT of recoil reduction. I think recoil is a bigger factor in bench accuracy than perhaps has been realized. having less recoil also makes shooting repeatability at the bench easier to maintain. if you can shoot a sub 5# 308 to around MOA I personally don't think shooting much better than that is going to be possible. 308 is going to be pretty violent in that weight, its like the S&W 329 (hate that gun) vs a full size 29, the heavier gun will shoot better and be easier to shoot.

Matt LaMay

You mean to tell me that a Kimber firearm is overpriced 😲.

Lon N

My ultralight hunting rifle is a 30/06 Savage Axis I paid $189 (with tax) for on a Walmart closeout. Freefloat the barrel and some trigger work it will shoot sub MOA with Remington 180 PSP's. Not a chance my cheap ass is going to spend $1500 for less rifle.

Eschebone

Great review, as always. Not in the market for a bolt action right now, but it was worth watching regardless. Appreciate the mini-review of the OneTigris thrown in, I picked up two!

Patrick Brichta

Great review. Could Agree more about the excessive cost, and expecting high performance. I got burned really bad after paying $1600 for the ruger SR556 and getting crap performance and no accuracy out of it. However, I do love my ruger predator in 308, I think I paid about 1/3 of the price for that Kimber It's super light, and I am definitely getting great accuracy. Thanks for the great review! Thanks for keeping the project chugging along

Nancy Merrell-Robertson

What can I say about how much I love the Nutnfancy reviews? Re this rifle, the light weight would draw me in but the price would stop me cold. I've shot two Kimbers that impressed me. The rest were finicky and frustrating.

Onewizeguy

Winchester M70 featherweight in 6.5x55 Swede- not super lightweight but it’s still the “one that got away”.

Phake A'Count

Maybe guys don't feel comfortable shooting grossly overpriced ammunition unless it's in a really expensive gun.

Tacticaldoodle

All my hunting friends are hungry for cans, once they get a taste of them it's hard to go back to unsuppressed!

Anthony Schaad

Great vid Nutn, I totally agree! I don’t get why or how when it comes to the price of some of these bolt guns. I myself really am a value guy n my main bolt gun is just a savage axis 3006, I’ve taken many game with it , I get its not the most super awesome high performance copper thrower around but it gets the job done !

Carl Bailey

The one tigris stuff has been propular with the bush crafter guys as well for tarps, tents and sleeping bags.

Tacticaldoodle

Gotta say, Kimber at least is doing some different stuff, even if I don't really know anyone who meets their customer profile. BBQ CCW pieces with slickery grips, expensive but lightweight guide guns for upscale hunters, and compact revolvers? An odd combo.

Tacticaldoodle

If they did this little thing like their cohorts, they'd have it in some chassis with a ton of modular adjustability built in so people can pretend they're Lee Swagger on overwatch. Their K6 was a breath of fresh air, but the fact that they went with the carry size first in what is mostly a collectible/enthusiast gun was also weird. It's like they see the market and tacke that sphere, but change it to suit this hypothetical customer they must sell everything to. Maybe he's mid 60's, living very well, fairly successful, doesn't go anywhere dangerous to need to carry, so he can get away with stylish ccw. He likes stuff that's distinctly classic and non-tactical, with just enough bling factor to appeal to non-gun types too. Oh, I checked it out and they indeed have a super tactical, 11.7 lb bolt chassis gun. It's the ADVANCED TACTICAL SPECIAL OPERATIONS CAPABLE II. SOC-II is an alright name, if a lil' odd.

Buff Orpington

Kimbers always look beautiful, but damn I’ve never seen one actually perform to its price point. Hell, I’m getting better groups out of my Savage Axis $200 Walmart gun with Wolf Ammo. Given, it’s also 7.5 pounds vs this 4.5 pounds, but it’s also 8x lower priced. I still hunt with Sabot slugs out of an Ithaca Deer Slayer because here in the North East, you can’t see past 75 yards through the brush anyway, so I don’t even need to pay the extra cash for sub-MOA accuracy.

The Nutnfancy Project

Thank you for the support and comment Patrick, much appreciated. I need to review the Predator sometime too.

The Nutnfancy Project

You are wise as always Connor, the T3 should have been mentioned here but I forgot about it

The Nutnfancy Project

Indeed! The Savage Axis remains a hall mark gun for me for its price, weight, and accuracy performance. I just love 'em.

Buff Orpington

It’s never let me down! I’ve had one around for years as a spare hunting gun. And it’s come in handy numerous times as someone’s much fancier setup went down. I simply re-mounted the included optic after receiving it, zeroed it with my go-to load, and called it a day.

TechNeck

Christ for that price i would rather pay another $500 and get a barret fieldcraft that comes from factory with a nightforce SVH. At least i know they preform, and the actions are so tailored to the rounds They can justify the price. Watching you fight the bolt on the kimber... You shouldn't have to man handle a dedicated hunting gun... It should ooze smoothness. The last thing you want to do while hunting sheep is make a ruckus loading a cartridge. You should be able to load a cartridge just pushing lightly with your thumb. Even a tika can do that.

TechNeck

For the price difference you can make up the weight buying lighter camping and hunting gear lol

Nathan P Hubsch

My mountain rifle is a Swiss 96/11 made in mountains for mountain combat.

Andrew Mullins

I can't believe the price on some of these rifles, hard pass.

Lead Kisses

Snagged a Classic Select in 25-06 for deer hunting when I started reloading. Picked up Hornady American Gunner to break it in since they were the cheapest loads at the store. Grouped 0.25" so I never got to reload for it.

Casey Jones

I agree on the assessment, Nutn. I have a Browning Xbolt stainless hunter that was half the price of this kimber and it shoots subMOA with everything from Hornady GMX down to $17 a box Monarch soft points. The gun doesn’t care. My Tikka T3 that was slightly less does the same thing, subMOA out of the box with any ammo, no break in period, just performance. About $1200 is my max on a nice bolt action and I’d be throwing the 2nd cool flag as well as the family heirloom flag. But if you’re out knocking deer down less than 200yds, I tell guys save you some money, stay under $700.

Great video as usual Nutn. Btw a quick note on One Tigris. I have their minimalist universal holster. You lose two features. The third securing method and the mag pouch. I have both. I like the minimalist better. It's superb quality for about $20. So much so I took a carbine course that focused on transitioning from rifle to secondary. The trainers were asking what holster it was. I ran it with the secondary Velcro strap removed. It functioned great. Also a HUGE plus is that it fits rail mounted lights a ton better. So really it has same amount of features but different set of them. Love it and have purchased two more. One for an LBE load out. And one for a battle belt I'm making for classes. Great stuff.

Ronin67

Great Review....No need to spend stupid and buy a name....I am finding that it's like this across almost all platforms now, be it guns, knives, gear, guitars etc. As always Nutn' keeps it real! And thanks for the heads up on the holster!! Will be adding one in the immediate future.

Aaron

Finally watched this video. Again, thank you for continuing The Project. So on a complete whim and with no research whatsoever (like that’s never happened before) I picked up a Remington 700 Series 7 Kuiu 16.5 inch threaded barrel in 308 for $550 at a local gun store back in January. I’m considering putting the ATN 4K Pro you reviewed on it. Anyway it’s ridiculously small and light weight. My first “hunting” rifle. I’m hopeful I made a good choice, since I have yet to take it to the range. Any who, keep up the great work!

watchman5

Hey Nutn, speaking to the point you made about shooting being expensive etc., would you consider doing a video on some good value precision Air rifles we can use for shooting small game and Varmints?

Ben Wagner

If these companies are going to make accuracy claims, they should specify what commercial ammo they’re using.

Wyatt B. Harrison

i had a similar rifle,, Remington Model 7 in 308W, 18" pencil barrel. I bought it " like new " but second hand. previous owner had it Magnaported. I threw myself at it to get it to shoot a decent group for a long time. Best i could get out of it with quality ammo 3.5" group at 100yd. i eventually divorced it. in contrast my G.D. Mossberg MVP 308W ThuderRanch edition shoots tight cloverleaf groups. just bought a second MVP 308 in a 16.5"Patrol model.
