A totally new design, Smith and Wesson brings us the surprising CSX. Maybe you can think of it as a combination of Sig P938 and a Shield Plus. Continuing an industry trend, this pistol has a few more ounces than the striker fired concealed carry kings like the Sig P365 and S.A. Hellcat but it's still light at 20 oz. That and a single action only (SAO) trigger will make the CSX easier to hit with.  It's an interesting and new concealed carry pistol formula. It does have some quirks and these are addressed in this feature length Nutnfancy gun review.  Snow testing was accomplished. Accuracy, reliability, firepower, sights, finishing, ergos, and shootability are shown/discussed. A rare appearance of Mrs Nutnfancy helping with the shooting is part of this timely, feature length TNP GRV!

This oldie but goodie popped up in a HellCat search: just grabbed an FDE HC Pro SA bundle; CT RMR, 2-17rd mags, 3-15 rders, range bag shipped for $579. That dual stage RSA is a game changer as it was for the Glock 30/36 purrrfections...Drive on!!! HC Pro review?

Quentin moore

Nutnfancy when is your LCP max review coming out??? Yes i already bought it. Lol. Thank you for the years of service and may there be many more! Happy new year!

Harrison Nobles

Nothing interesting to me. I really don't see the reason not to have a rail and the trigger sounds like hot garbage.

Daniel Herb

Its awesome to see S&W change up their lineup and potentially change the market. I agree with you Nutn on buying the gun for personal carry, I will stick with my lighter P365/P365XL over this heavier CSX9. I already have my holsters and preferred method of carry with the P365 integrated into my systems so I wont be changing that up soon. I do think you hit the nail on the head though about my wife liking this heavier 9mm, she does not like the 'snappiness' of the P365 so maybe its a good idea to see if she will love this gun. Thanks as always Nutn!

Andrettski

My sub-compact carry is a S.A. XD9-Mod 2, I seem to shoot it better than other subs I've tried. I'm not a fan of blacked out sights at all. I have a couple diff red(s) model paint enamels that I use on sights. Actually wanna find some really bright green to try because I'm sure digging the green illuminated optics that are more available.

Shot442

Nutn, are the mags compatible with the Shield plus? I'm passing on this one due to the trigger weight and broken grip panel and if the mags are proprietary that's a miss. I moved from years of carrying Kahr PM9, one in pocket and one on ankle over to the P365.

Trustful Marksman

I would be very interested if they fix the trigger. Why would they go through all the trouble of a SAO and make it so heavy? Nutn is there an msrp out on this gun yet?

The Nutnfancy Project

Hello Daniel! Thanks for the comment and support. Indeed there's not a lot here that would interest me. But we like what we know works for us. For the womens, this could be the ticket if they deal with the overall carry weight.

The Nutnfancy Project

That would be a question I would have liked to answer (mag comp. with Shield Plus). I don't have that gun, it was just a loaner but I suspect they ARE knowing S&W. You are wise to carry the P365, it is STILL the best out there.

Ryan Reese

I love the innovation and R&D that goes into anything new like the CSX. I’m just not sure that it will have any place in the saturated 9mm subcompact market. The shootability that comes with extra weight does add a lot of confidence to the owner so that does go a long way. I’m not too confident with the PF9 because I know my limitations but a G17 opens up a ton of confidence.

Brad Fegan

Interesting pistol for sure. I am curious, how would you compare this to the Sig p239? Even though discontinued and little heavier.

BRIAN J ANDERSON

Another great GRV!! I really appreciate all the talking points and shooting footage. Always great to see Mrs. Nutn out testing! So many guns have been introduced since I bought my first Kahr P9 15 years ago. It almost seems the firearms are easier to purchase than the ammo!

Boone Mill Farm

Well, what a surprise. I watched this on youtube several hours ago. I thought I had let one sneak thru the cracks and missed one. Check email and here it is again. Im going to check out those holsters. Tks.

Lon N

Damn Nutn, I predict your next trip to this rock will be as a string bikini wearing blonde with a "The beer is on me" tattoo...temptation piled on temptation. Excellent GRV as always - honest.

Adam Boyd

Their gen 2 should address the very plain 70s form factor. It looks like a back up gun from the set of Starsky and Hutch! 🤣

steve garrett

I don't see where this gun fits. I get the desire for something a touch heavier than say a 365, IMO that would be a good fit as a women's gun. but this gun has a 1911 style control, IMO not a great fit as a womens gun. I personally like lighter. I can shoot my 365 almost as a good as a full size. I also can shoot it a lot of rounds. ie its easy to shoot.

Downtrodden

I think there’s a group of people who would gladly switch their polymer grip modules over to a metal chassis if it were economical. I like my P365 but I consider it 1st cool. The CSX adds a touch of 2nd cool in my opinion.

Jeremy doblinger

I see what there going for on this.. I'm gonna have to handle/shoot one..only thing for me is the weight of this pistol may be a no go.

Bernal

The Techna belt clip for the P365 works awesome! It replaces the back plate, easy install.

Bernal

I watch those reruns🤣

Racing Psychosis

Yeah....that's a hard pass. I'm perfectly fine with a G43, Hellcat, XDS, etc. No fan of stuff like that for a carry pistol. The metal portion of the frame, looks completely unfinished. It may be attractive to S&W and Kimber fan, looks like a big miss to me. At least they did not put that horrible articulate trigger on it, but the trigger pull you talk about sounds just freakin horrible. And why the hell would you not mill traction into the metal instead of that stupid little plastic inset piece. That mag is dumber than what XD does, at least theirs don't slide like that. Yep hard pass....IDK lately I'm not seeing much of anything that I would buy that is just coming out.

Powernoodle

There is zero reason to buy the CSX if it does not have a superior trigger. That's ridiculous. An awesome trigger is the sole purpose of SAO. Consider instead the fantastic Shield 9 EZ. It is functionally a SAO, (internal) hammer gun with a better trigger than you will find on any striker gun.

Trustful Marksman

That tracks with another source stating msrp at 600.

Chris Lacher

Enjoyed the review, as usual. Always learn something and also appreciate the forthrightness and humor.

Chris Lacher

I find it very odd that S&W would choose to name a pistol after a railroad. And that CSX doesn't object ...

Trustful Marksman

Someone tested it in another video and they are NOT cross compatible.

Tygre

Seven pounds? Why, Smith and Wesson? Four. One of the main attractions of a 1911-style action is their (potentially) awesome triggers translating into super accurate shooting. Seven pounds. Yeesh.

hoplite ⚔️

Thanks for the GRV. Snow testing with the Missus looked fun. Stoked on the shout out and that you used the patch to talk about accuracy!

hoplite ⚔️

The translucent Invicta looked cool.

hoplite ⚔️

I’m seeing the YouTube CSX vid has 65k views in under 24hrs. That seems like healthy engagement on the A-Channel!

Hold Fast Joe

Ditto. Had an lc9s, I sucked so bad! Wasn't the guns fault, just me

Hold Fast Joe

Great review! First time seeing this. Looks like a good one

Racing Psychosis

Maybe they took their styling cues from a Boxcar.

William H

Thanks for saying the LCP II part out loud, I do that all of the time - no Grizzlies here.

2026-09-15 18:00 Saw the vid on YouTube due to ease of navigation more like podcasting it Nutn 🤣, interesting mini 9mm 1911 but Jesus people when is someone gonna make a polymer framed 1911 pistol we have the tech to do it 2022 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ (sigh of disappointment) i carry a Glock 43 ankle with 147s 👌 for my work and environment how im outside and inside unpredictability throughout the day it’s out of the way and I don’t go inside the ankle to weird feeling did it on my right ankle perfect reach incase for use and no one notices it throughout the whole day. Hearing the weight of the CSX just give me the dam G26 it’s a older design but it’s what started this sub compact high round count competition 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Robert Plested

Mrs NF and you together cover the 5 thru 95 percent human factors spectrum. Thanks to her for participating in testing.

Tim Bone

That's what I was thinking as well...

William H

86k views on YouTube in only two days, you really know the market Nutn! It seemed kind of gimmicky to me.

Joshua Pulliam

Yo! Did anyone else notice the P-90 mag on the tailgate of the truck?!?!?! Looks like a cool gun. But no pic rail makes it a no.

Hold Fast Joe

I saw that too, I thought he reviewed one before? Maybe he just had it out for fun

Joshua Pulliam

Just looked it up and he did review the PS-90 a couple years ago. I remember that now. I don’t think I watched it though. Now I have to.

The Nutnfancy Project

You bet Robert, I was glad she helped me out. It was a better review with her input.

The Nutnfancy Project

All xlnt points you make Cody and I love your carry choice of G43 with 147s. I just love the mini Glocks. The G26 will also be forever used in my inventory! Thanks dude.

Spenser Weese

Just handled one of these at my local g shop. Definitely interested!

hoplite ⚔️

Yeah man, that's what I thought that was.

Gilbert Cuzdey Jr

The trigger is a bummer. The whole point of single action is to have a bangin trigger. Seems like a waste of a design to have such a stiff trigger. I love that they're putting out new designs though. Way to go Smith and Wesson!

Steve Feeser

Nice!! Kinda like a compact lightweight high cap 1911. I really prefer single action. Been carrying that way for 30 plus years. If they fix that trigger I’m very interested. A bit longer barrel would be nice maybe 3.5 to 4 inches.

Chris Kales

Thanks for the review Nutn! I absolutely love, love, love my Sig P938 which ia my daily carry, but have been looking to size up my concealed carry's ammo capacity to fill what I'll refer to as an intermediate threat readiness role. When BLM and Antifi were burning down buildings and beating down store owners and innocent civilians in nearby cities my P938 just felt a bit ammo-lite and my Glock 17 felt too overt bringing too much attention to myself. I do find some 2nd cool in this S&W CSX (I actually dig the smooth machining on the sides of the grip) and although the hellcat will most likely be my first purchase to fill the hightened threat role, I may have to see if my local gunstore has one of these I can check out. Like Mrs. Nutn, I'm guessing my wife would appreciate this softer shooting pistol over her p238.

Ben Wagner

Did S&W give you a hard time about this review coming out early?

Pace Shelton

It may be for the new keltec pistol that takes p90 mags?? Keltec p50, I mean he is big on Kel-Tec!!

Those are collectible now, though. Hell, you'd probably be able to make money on it if he's offering it at a good price.

I'm so disappointed. Huge fan of SA 9mm in any size/POU. When I saw the preview I saw exactly what it is, aluminum metal-frame single-action version of a Smith shield. Should be perfect. The front-strap failure, the unnecessary heavy (should be 3.5 SA) trigger...disappointment. I wanted to say to my Father here is the smaller 9mm pistol I can recommend to you to carry instead of your G23 which you feel is too big and you aren't totally comfortable with the lack of external safety...he seems way more OK with cocked/locked...like I am. I'll still tell him (for now) to get a Springfield 911 9mm and make sure it works as good as mine. Smith fell short on this first CSX, hopefully they'll get it right with a 2.0 version because it has serious potential.

John Anon

Apex will probably provide an aftermarket trigger within 6 months but it sounds like a significant market segment don't like replacing the trigger on their carry gun. This begs for a performance center version a la the Shield EZ 9 with at least a better trigger. It also leaves the door open for SIG or Springfield to release a v2 of the 938 or the 911. There may already be something in the works for Springfield because the 911 is now officially discontiued and it seemed that they hadn't produced any since the beginning of 2020.

John Anon

Any thoughts on the 30 Super Carry? Will we be the old kermudgions in 20 years droning on about "volumetric tissue crush", "knock-down power", and "3 world wars"?
