The Nutnfancy review on the much hyped Springfield Armory Hellion! This isn't a five or even fifteen minute GRV. This is a feature length review with lots of shooting video shown. TNP Crew member Jardine and I gave this bullpup a full day workout and quickly came up with some opinions. I congratulate Springfield for bringing to market another cool bullpup purchase option. They are few.

But unlike some reviewers, I'm not star crossed at the Hellions introduction. I'll review it like any other item you'd integrate into your systems: a critical look at 1st and 2nd Cool capabilities. I'll ground the review in discussions of SAWC, value, other bullpups reviewed, and a interesting comparative purchase that you'd be passing up. Several surprising performance realizations of the Hellion are discovered in our testing.

But is this the bullpup you've "been waiting for?" Maybe but first "slow your roll" a bit and watch this video before you make your decision. It's $2000 price tag is STEEP and you should wisely consider this purchase. Functioning as your advocate I give the no BS, not-bought-and-paid-for data on this expensive bullpup that really breaks no new ground.

One minute in and a new acronym comes to mind - TDH - Too Damn Honest.

J Ram

Friday night feature length GRV!!! Let me go grab some popcorn and settle in!!!

Shawn Kuse

The weekend....get to catch up on Nutn vids!!

Metal-Militia

Thanks Nutnfancy for an awesome review. 👌🏼

Joseph Peña

This is exactly why we love and trust you Nutn! This may still be a 2nd cool buy for me though.

Lee Harrell [W5GCF]

Keepin' it real as always. Great video. I haven't thought about VHS since the 90s.

BranDingo

What is lightest ar15 under 1k

Harrison Nobles

I'm watching this whole staying warm by the fireplace, we have an ice storm outside. What multi cam jacket is that nutn? I like it

Lon N

Finished watching . As always an honest opinion rocks the boat, thanks Nutn & Jardine...I am always up for a GRV...even about the latest wow factor sales firearms. Bullpups look cool, are short and handy, but, I have a memory of shooting a bullpupped Mini 14 way back when. Probably the same one TD railed on years ago, I wasn't impressed then despite drooling over the ads for the conversion in Soldier of Fortune magazine. Keep the winners coming and the whiners whining.

Hugh Amlett

Man you are on it with these timely reviews! When I heard 8 pounds at launch I knew you'd rail on this gun.

Shawn Kuse

Thank you so much Nutn for the many hours and time you put into your vids. I enjoy your content. For the past 13 years you have added to my life with a love of guns, knives, watches, motorcycles, and gear. Learned so much in that time. Bucket list one day...sit and have a cup of coffee with ya and just rap!

Ace Invasive

Thank you! Those reviews for this dropped together like propaganda - I couldn't trust them.

Anthony Schaad

Great vid Nutn!! I was wondering if u we’re gonna review it lol. I’ve never really been a fan of bullpups, just better options out there … In my opinion ( AR15 cough) lol. But like u I’m sure it will do decently, there are definitely fans of the design and to come from major manufacturer . Great entertaining review Nutn!

kylenor

I like the way this thing looks. I don't like the price. When is somebody gonna make a lightweight or at least lighter weight bullpup? Well I guess the RDB is pretty light.

Kirk Fickert

If I'm going to spend that much on a rifle I think I'd much rather try out the WWSD 2020 rifle that's under 5lbs.

DirtyPhil

Just bought a rdb survival last month- made by “Florida swamp people” !

RowdyRon

I kind of like the looks of the Tavor, and the Hellion, but I could never part with that much money for one. I like my M92 Pappy with a brace better. Big fan of piston guns though. Thanks for the review Nutn.

DirtyPhil

1st bullpup and 1/2 as much -

Daniel Defoe

Awesome review as always! When I saw the release announcement I thought this would be cool... Then I started seeing the reviews. Nope. Not for me. I've seen a bunch of guys saying the same things about the trigger, price, controls and weight. I'm not as sure as you are that this is going to have staying power in the market.

Zachary Jackson

I saw this popping up all over and was like… time to buy another AR

Clint Allison

🤣🤣 the look on Jardine's face when figuring out the bolt release was priceless! 🤣🤣 WTF is this!? Bolt release looks like an afterthought to me. Thanks for the honest review as always. It's cool but it's not $2000 cool.

Bernal

I recently bought some $20 shooting sticks, can’t wait to try them.

Rho

It’s hard not to see the weight of a bull pup and not think AK or AR10 range. Also That price is Sig MCX range with folding stock you can store it about the same as that Hellion.

cody white

Great vid and learned a lot from them and it’s nice to see a gun reviewer who’s willing to test the products in the most unpredictable environment not the regular gun range but the outdoors through freezing snow to hot desert is why I like your channel heck when you said save yourself alot of money I’m like okay something not sun shine and lollypops on the hellion. Looks cool but the only two bull-pups I’ve truly shot are the tavor & ps90 and nowadays the latest tavor is forgotten and heck I wanted to buy one almost did but the accuracy was LAUGHABLE. Keep up the great work and if possible review a German Luger 🤷‍♂️ just a thought

Jeremy doblinger

Dang!! That AR @ 6 lbs with a scope on it dude! Now we're talking Nutn!! Thanks for the review brother!!

Jordan Parker

Enjoying a quiet evening and a full length GRV with Jardine! I've always liked the idea of a bullpup, but it seems like none meet all of the criteria I'm after, primarily being short, lightweight, and having a great trigger. Looking forward to the day a company puts it all together in one package.

Eschebone

Fantastic review Nutn, this was a fun one. Very thorough and very fair, as always. You can tell it's a legit review because yours didn't come with the Nightforce optic like everyone else's videos, haha! I'm admittedly another one of those guys who just couldn't wait for the review. Purely 2nd kind of cool sold me on the Hellion, I've been hoping SA would import the VHS-2 for a while now and dropped the money as soon as it was available for order. I did manage to get mine for barely over cost instead of MSRP, which lessens the pain just a little. I still really dig it despite the quirks and shortcomings, especially since it's not intended to fill any serious POU for me. Don't know what to say, it just does something for me! Really enjoyed watching this review, outstanding work as always.

TechNeck

when I saw this gun on forgotten weapons... first thing i thought "american made Type 97?" sure its more advanced... but man the price is way higher. I picked up my T97 for $1200 CAd (like $850 USD) . the only thing the hellion seams to do better is the adjustable stock.

Ben Jerozal

Hey, it was awesome to meet and talk with you about it. I did end up ordering one. More of a 2nd kind of cool thing. Great video and a lot to consider if I end up putting it into a POU.

Tyler Van Zile

Lol, I had a feeling you wouldn't like this thing. Still good for second cool, but obviously it doesn't perform to the price point with say, a comparably priced AR. Thanks for the info as these things a next to impossible to buy at the moment anyways :)

Casey Jones

Bullpups are expensive man toy for me. No knocks to the guy that buys one. I’ll have to be in a much more plentiful season of life before I buy one. Good review

Andrettski

Until someone makes the 'ALIENS' M-41A Pulse Rifle with say a 12 gauge slug 'grenade' launcher at sub 8 lbs I'm a no so far. Absolute cool factor is a yes but SAWC has to be addressed. It seems like any mfg. puts makes a 'Bullpup' it automatically jacks the $ way up. It looks like the Hellion's (cool name, BTW) sight to bore axis is about 4-5 inches! WTF! Great GRV and thank Jardine for joining you.

Chris Adkins

Another awesome review, Nutn, thanks. I still like my OG Tavor SAR for 2nd cool and because at the time it was the only 5.56 rifle that interested me, so it was my hedge against 7.62 shortages. I had a chance to ask a former Israeli special forces guy about the Tavor last summer and he confirmed your POU 100%. But he still chooses an AR pistol over it in every situation.

Bernal

4-5” sight to bore, yuck!

hoplite ⚔️

Agreed on the OG Tavor, yes I wish it was lighter, but those lightweight ARs are not an option here in Canada. Prohibited. I like the tavor for an urban WROL POU and it was built to be ergonomic for females in the Israeli army. (Wife rifle POU) I think the Hellion looks too busy, I much prefer the aesthetic of the Tavor. That being said, sexiest looking bullpup 🏆 goes to the Famas sitting up there!

Nathan Simms aka Darkpriest

You nailed the reason I have stuck with you and been a long term patreon. Integrity -- you don't BS about whether a piece of gear is worth a crap or not.

Chris Adkins

Rock on, I'm just south of you in Minnesoooota, hoplite. I'm still glad and somewhat amazed that you guys got the Tavor SAR at all up there. I think Canada might have even gotten it before the US did?

Trustful Marksman

First media I saw about this gun I said "Nutns going to complain about that weight!" But it doesn't take a long term tnp'r to call that one.

Elijah Ballard

Thanks for the review Nutn! I would buy it for the 2nd kind of cool factor if it was closer to $1200 or less.

Downtrodden

Love the honesty of this video. I am a bullpup owner and it’s my primary defensive rifle. I live in a less free state (not for long) and the commonwealth’s attorney general prohibits the purchase of standard new AR15s. There are a few expensive workarounds to the silly rules but the RDB was available and affordable so that became my system. I’ve enjoyed it and it does what I need it to do. So bullpups are awesome the guys who live in less free states, want a little more than a Mini14, can’t find a SU-16, and unwilling to bend over for a pre-ban AR. Pre-ban mags are cheaper than pre-ban receivers!

The Nutnfancy Project

Hello Tyler, thanks for watching and the comment. Yeah, I'm not in love with the Hellion

The Nutnfancy Project

"no knocks to the guy that buys one." Exactly. It's a competent bullpup but not for me

The Nutnfancy Project

Thanks Nathan. Indeed my only allegiance is to you guys. I wish all the companies well but I cannot act like it's awesome when it ain't.

Brandon conley

I always though the idea of a bullpup was cool, but the kicker for me is the level of value. I could stock a small armory with entry level PSA ar15's for the price of one mediocre obese 5.56 with a sponge bob trigger job. To me, the value just isn't there.

Hold Fast Joe

Great review, I think it looks awesome and being accurate makes this my number 1 if I were going to get a bullpup. Get a trigger job with a holosun would make it a winner! 2k... Ugh..

Nicholas Saviano

I really don't see the second cool in this. I see it definitely in the famas, tavor, and AUG. These would be guns I would be more willing to spend 2k. I really don't see how people want this helion at that price point.

Jesse (Sphinx)

“ Congratulations—now you have a 12-pound rifle…in 556. Good job.” Haha. Love it

Racing Psychosis

Certainly do not have to worry about me buying a bullpup. Unless it came in a lever action, no way in hell am I interested in buying one. And everytime I see Jardine, I think of Bruce Buffer's intro for the Dean of Mean Keith Jardine. Who's sights are those? That rail looks like a really long Lego Hanger.

Trevor

Great review! All of the down sides are to be expected, I am planning on scooping one up I’ll see how the prices settle in a month er two I love when a manufacturer brings in a true military rifle and bastardize it as least as possible

PDuncan

Thanks Nutn for doing what you do. I’ve learned more from watching your videos over the last several years than I ever could’ve is an every day civilian about firearms.

fishbike

It seems to me that the shooter's support hand is too close to the end of the barrel. One slip and you'll shoot you hand off kid!

hoplite ⚔️

A guy I know ran a comic book shop for a while and had a replica of the Aliens rifle. It was so sick.

hoplite ⚔️

Listening to this for a second time while I make dinner. PROPS to Wyatt and co. @ Gunnies for sticking up for Nutn and the TNP process. I can’t see myself in Utah anytime soon but maybe I have them ship something up to me.

Porter3861

Another awesome, entertaining, & informative video! Really enjoy being a Patreon member and the access to your content. Every time my wife sees me watching TNP she asks if I plan to buy whatever your are reviewing. Now I wonder why that is . . . ?

Porter3861

Oh, and Semper Paratus Nutn!

hoplite ⚔️

Totally agree with this. I keep checking our listings too for an SU-16 too.

Chris Kales

Thanks for the review Nutn! The Hellion carries some second cool for me, (looks similar to the Famas, and the Helghast rifle in the Playstation Killzone games - nerd alert). However, at the end of your video, Jardine commented on the weight distribution of this gun, which got me thinking. I use the original Tavor SAR as my "go to" and can easily one hand the gun while shouldered. It is butt heavy for sure, but its weight sticks well in my shoulder and the front end feels relatively light and maneuverable making one handed operations fairly easy. Did you agree with Jardine's assessment, and how would you compare the weight distribution between the Tavor SAR and the Hellion?

Jardine

Hi Chris. I don't shoot bullpups much. I noticed the rifle being very heavy towards the butt stock. It was very evident as I ran with it. AR's tend to be front heavy, so my natural tendency is to prop the gun with my forward hand and pull in with my shooting hand. I have shot the Tavor and as I recall the weight distribution was very similar. If you are good with the Tavor then I think the Hellion will feel very similar.

Jardine

Keith was a bad man!

Jardine

It is always my pleasure.

Chris Kales

Understood. Thanks for the response Jardine!

Will Teasle

The REAL Springfield Armory closed in 1968.

Skylar Hobbs

I can’t wait to see that 2a gun! Bull pups are cool, but I hate the idea of trying to learn a new weapon system like that. Excellent review!

Josh P.

Great vid, I’ve never liked the look of them, just me, I’m invested in the AR platform and gonna stay there. And I still wouldn’t pay 2k for a good AR no way, too much good stuff for less than that, and can preform just as well. Thanks for the insight!

A

Can you do another Gunsmith video like the old days with "Yoda G."?

TechNeck

i've owned 2 both get about 1-1.5 moa... they seem to like 62gr ammo.

Rob Miller

My small Patrion contribution just saved me 2K. No brainer. Thank you.

Red dog 1

Hey Nutn, your welcome.

Red dog 1

But Nutn sometimes you don’t review a gun for awhile……like years. I don’t want to wait that long.

EthanRX

Thanks Nutn! Great info here.

Josh p. Blackburn

That’s absurd, my AR-10 weighs 8lbs 2.5oz bare rifle without a mag, 9lbs 12oz with optic and heavy American defense Mount

TheOldShepherd

Great review! Your complete honesty keeps me coming back always. More moto stuff please!!

maxmfs

Ha! Great review. Thanks. If one wants a 12lbs rifle from SA, buy an M1A… Just saying. The whole package strikes me as a nod to the CODMW crowd. As you note, think of what you could otherwise equip yourself with for that type of money.

CavScout

The M1A is still a classy rifle, and surprisingly fun to put a red dot sight on and treat rather AR-like. So bad of a weapon, that US Army Delta were using them effectively in the 90's. The 'Hellion' is another nation's service rifle, getting imported thankfully. Most of us are already SWIMMING in AR15's and AR10's. Nothing left to really buy and collect but things that are neat or just make us happy. But it's hardly a 'nod' to the 'CODMW crowd,' and far less than most of the 'it needs to be like this to be [whatever term is used for 'tactical' now]' crowd.

CavScout

Great video Nutn, thanks! Ya, I'm awash with 2nd cool, so most all that's left is 1st kind. I don't know if I'll buy a Hellion, but very well may if the price comes down. Also working at becoming a gunsmith, so I like having a lot of different pattern guns. If the Hellion is a more fixable by installing a ~$250 trigger than my Beretta ARX would be, then more likely. Maybe it's finally time to just freakin buy an ACR... I hear they're actually really nice.

Mini Me

$2000.00? What the hellion?

Lou D

Amen.
