We go again to the Hamilton brand to look at a rarity: an auto powered field watch. I don't see too many of these around, especially Swiss ones at this "value" price.  I'll talk about the scam of boutique buying Hamiltons (and other Swiss watches), advocated by such reviewers as UrbanGentry, and how you can save big by avoiding them.

This H70535081 Hamilton watch gets just about everything right: legibility, thinness, looks, strap, lume, an ETA C07.111 with an incredible 80 hr power reserve, and sapphire crystal. I'll compare it against my Hamilton 50mm Khaki Field hand wind, another incredibly fun watch to wear. Some cool competitive options are also shown, below too!

Bravo

Looking forward to this one. Love the looks of these watches even though they are usually pricy. It’s so weird every time I’m looking at my phone and think “I think it’s about time for a new nutn vid, one pops up within a couple mins” 👌

Ben H.

Watching the review! I love it but I'm looking for a watch with this layout(sword hands, numbers/font and basic graduation lines) with glass at a 150-250 price point. Currently I'm leaning towards the Smokejumper 44 but I wish it didn't have the micro graduations as it makes it a little busy for my taste.

Tim Jarvis

That's a good looking watch. If someone would make a field watch that looks this good with tritium, solar and atomic time keeping. I'd pay a stupid amount for it. For now my PRW-6600 will have to do for a off duty watch.

Zachary

I’m watching this review as I wear my Hamilton 38mm field mechanical, probably my overall favorite watch \m/

Downtrodden

I was going suggest a hands mod video but I realized I didn’t do a thorough search! Love the watch videos!

John Mell

Those Hamiltons autos are so great. Thst is my dream watch and not to far out of reach. Thanks for reviewing this one and others. Always the best reviewer by far...

Clint Raby

I really hate that you do the watch show Nutn! It's cost me a fortune, and I'm about to tear into my first watch to try modifying the hands. So far I haven't spent more than 300 on a watch but I can see it happening.

Brandon Hutchins

Anyone know what the most reasonably priced Swiss movement is?

Joshua Pulliam

Hey Nutn! Can you explain why some watches have the military time as 12 and 24 verses 0 and 12? The 12 and 24 doesn’t make sense because there isn’t a such thing as 2400 hours right? Looks like a cool watch, but way out of my league. I’ll stay in the shallow end with you! I just scored a new (but ever so slightly damaged with a couple scratches on the crown) Casio Protrek PRG-600YB for $197! Every time I look at my wrist it makes me happy!

Steve Feeser

So if your in the shallow end I guess I’m in a puddle. I have one watch. A Timex solar powered. I’ve had it for two years and it’s going good so far. It’s a black field watch, to my novice eye it looks much like the ones in this video. It is 1.620 inch across. So 41 mm. I guess I measured the right place not sure. I have small wrists about 6 inch around and this feels a bit big. I’ve seen Vaer advertised on Facebook. They have a nice 36 mm field watch, at least I like it. Are they any good? I hate to spend $160 on a watch. That’s a lot of ammo!!!! Thanks for all you do! Keep it up. Maybe I’ll come over to the watch side.

Watch show is dope. Love rolling around town running my errands listening to Nutn say Shiny Metal. Hamiltons are pretty sweet. I’ve definitely perused the catalogue. There was an open heart dress watch that was pretty breathtaking (hahaha - I can’t believe I just wrote that). Out of my price range for sure though. Nutn got me hooked on the affordable collection. Was rocking a matte blue diver on grey perlon today. Thanks for venturing into the deep end to help inform our purchasing considerations. Did y’all see the Omega X Swatch Moonswatch collection? My favs where Earth & Saturn. My 6 year old wanted Mars. Check them out!!

hoplite ⚔️

I wish that happened for me. I’m always jonesing.

hoplite ⚔️

Oh, and nice one on the Islander Aviator CO. The F14 was a catch and release for me while I hunted for my first automatic. (I landed on the green Orient Triton Nutn recently reviewed… I decided I wanted a timing bezel) I’ve been re-looking at those Aviators. The blue dial type-a is choice. That being said, gonna try and lay off the watch purchases for a bit. I have a bad feeling about what’s happening in Europe. I think the tough times Nutn has been warning about are on the horizon.

Tacticaldoodle

Funny you dropped this now, was going over a few options with a friend on Sunday, he wanted something in the 'couple hundred dollars' range to celebrate. He wanted it to fit the mold of his Seiko SNK.? I don't remember the names, he has the little tiny 5 series with the cool dial everyone gets as a starter. Looking through some of the cheap options, I think he's going for a Laco Erbstuck, oddly he really wasn't into the Khaki so much. I don't blame him, it's a fine piece but stylistically it just doesn't resonate with me like the other stuff. Maybe as the review goes on I'll like it a lot more. Also the price has uh...gone up? The titanium one was almost a grand, thought it was half that!

Tacticaldoodle

Yeah, I don't have as much use for watches that are Time-Only, the main use for me is timing things. It's a shame, because I love the B-UHR style and I have a hankerin' something fierce for a big, spacious dial. I found a cheesy chinese one for $75 with a VH31 movement on amazon that I have my freakin' eye on.... I know I won't use it enough, but I would like to slake my thirst. I can't even decide, have always been a type B guy, but type A is really alluring lately

Tacticaldoodle

That little Sellita is pretty cheap, I think. Off the top of my head, I think a very rough equivalent to the NH35 would be about $300 or so. There are other outliers, like the 6497 hand winder but that's only for the bigger stuff, and even then it's not at that much of a price break. The quartz stuff from Ronda ranges, from like $8 bucks to $60 depending on the movement

hoplite ⚔️

Had to look up B-UHR and slack my thirst. Word. I think Mark at Long Island Watch has nailed the CLEAN spacious Type-A with his Aviators. They seem to 'deliver more' than the Type-B he does. Type-B is dope too, I like being pointed to the minute graduation - it feels more practical in a sense. Orient does a sexy Type-B on nato strap I believe. OD dial with Khaki markings if I recall.. Available in Chrono too I think..

hoplite ⚔️

Nutn should review one of the white dial Damascos. Hot damn - those looks clean.

Paul Griech

i own one but i’m waiting for the titanium day date Hamilton!

CincinnatiDan (Ohio)

Is it worth it? I can add that a local watchmaker doesn’t bother with repairing Invicta or Steiner or similar inexpensive mechanical movements... says you can buy a new one for less than the time it takes him to open and diagnose much less repair. And parts are super cheap... not inexpensive but cheap, thin, flimsy... so disassembly of the movement is risky. He’s a small family owned jewelry shop, buys and sells used watches, so your experience might be different but I trust and respect his advice.

PATRICK C BUBB

Liked the Review.... Watch, Knives, Flashlights, Guns...etc; like the variety. Like swimming in the sallow end but, you have to try swimming in the deep end every once and awhile.

Tacticaldoodle

We'll see if the rumors are true, for $260 they're still quite overpriced in a way, but I love the idea behind them, and it's a great way to breathe life into the hobby. I know I'm the only one who thinks so, but the speedmaster Swatch movement sucks balls, in the classic tradition of swiss quartz movements it's totally bland and antiquated. They should have done what all the imitation $99 speedmaster clones use and tossed a Seiko VK series mechaquartz on there, then you'd get a much more true-to-speedie chrono beating 4x/sec (or whatever) I Know, they didn't do that on purpose, because swatch group has piles of nearly free Ronda shit AND I guarantee omega demanded a slow ticker because that's a biiiiiiiig deal in the high-end watch world.

Tacticaldoodle

Really comes down to the movement, for a lot of them, yes. For those with an off-the-shelf movement like the 8215 or NH35 you can buy for sixty bucks, it's less of an issue. Busting open the movement itself is the expensive part, just unscrewing the back and swapping the module is pretty speedy. I don't even know if the expensive stuff is worth fixing, tbh. It will be interesting to see what happens as the moneyed watch guys die off, half the reason guys will happily drop 2400 on a worn Omega is because they're assuming if they don't it will never go for 6 figures at auction. Oh, and citizen quoted me about $500 to fix my in-warranty navihawk at...so that's great.

Tacticaldoodle

unless I'm going for collectible, I'd grab every casio used and abused. They look so much cooler that way

Joshua Pulliam

And they’re cheaper that way. I am a Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator so my watches always get beat up. I don’t feel quite as bad putting wear on it when it’s already scratched.

maxmfs

I like the watch reviews. I can remember back in high school in the late 80s lusting after the automatic Hamiltons in the L.L. Bean catalog. When I finally got my hands on a metal bracelet Hamilton Khaki field watch toward the end of high school, I thought I had arrived. Then It was off to the races - G-Shocks, a Seamaster, a Speedmaster, GMT Master II, Oris Big Hand, Seiko Turtle, etc, etc.

Trey

I have been drooling over a Hamilton khaki. One of these days...Great review Nutn

david rockwell

The reviewed 42mm Hamilton is just about perfect. The uncluttered face, large legible numerals and svelte design coalesce into a classic time piece. Thank you for the continued effort and dedication.

Bernal

Casio GWM 5610U: Solar and Atomic. …Just got two and ordered translucent Royal Blue and Clear bezels and straps, so sick!!

Bernal

Wearing Infantry field watch now, from the shallow end. Love it.

Bernal

I FOUND an Invicta 14878 on the ground, broken band. Works…. Ripe for mods, under construction. All of a sudden I’m in the watch game. Shallow end only for Bernal🤪

Bernal

Actually, I just put it back together right now. It is not broken, just needs fitting. Also, Maguires ultra finishing polish 205 and a Q-tip took all of the tiny scratches off the glass. This thing looks brand new now. I would have never bought gold but, I actually like this thing.

jonathan ocampo

Thanks for the review Nutn. Did you buy these or are they just for review

Tacticaldoodle

And that one Avi-8 harrier (or its derivative off brands, from the looks of it it's being made still unchanged under other names now) has a '0' on the top. I think it's just a force of habit for some of them, but I've seen it both ways, depends on their dial layout and number treatment if I had to guess

Tacticaldoodle

Anything advertised on facebook or insta seems to be a drop-shipped product with a re-badged name. If you like the model, I'd go digging a bit and see if you can dig up the original manuracturer. I've seen more than a few FB ads like that where someone says "hey wait a minute, I could grab this direct from the designer for sixty bucks!"

Joshua Pulliam

The 24 hour time thing is kind of a pet peeve of mine. It just kinda bothers me when there’s a 24. I love how AVI-8 does it. I’m trying to keep my self control and not buy one just yet. . .

Chris carr

Here for the entertainment and enjoy looking at watches, but still can’t bring myself to wear one lol

Thomas Baker

I could sit back and enjoy watch reviews all day!

hoplite ⚔️

He’s right - it brings a lot of simple daily joy. I’m rocking a green bezel Casio MDV106 on a cool leather strap that Nutn sent. It looks so freakin amazing. Such an awesome piece of edc kit. It takes research and vids like Nutn is doing but you can score some very handsome and affordable watches. PS - Was playing with the TNP Endura just before I wrote this.

hoplite ⚔️

I think the LIW divers are homage here seikos too much. They were considered but hands and case sizing just didn’t do it for me. The aviator they do is super clean. I really like the steinhart you linked. Like the size, the aesthetic, and that OD/khaki color. Very nice piece. I tried to score a silver and black Stuhrling aviator I think Nutn brought out as a CO once. I think it’s an 800 series but is now discontinued or replaced by an updated model. Do y’all still have that in inventory? If so, is it for sale? Here is that orient I was talking about. $141 on sale. https://www.jomashop.com/orient-pilot-green-dial-mens-watch-ra-kv0501e10b.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwopWSBhB6EiwAjxmqDQYdVk66vTBsRkJH7RDsUcsD3SKJY80RRKr1CKIo81fAeS3DPy_IABoC5ewQAvD_BwE

hoplite ⚔️

I definitely wasn’t thinking any of that. Hahaha.

Matthew LINY

Hamilton is a great value and love to see these watches reviewed

Daniel Herb

Man that was a nice watch! Defiantly way more than I am comfortable spending on a watch, but I loved it.

Jesse (Sphinx)

"After you finished your *ESPRESSO*!" haha Love the watch, but Hamilton lost their appeal when they became another swiss brand. I do buy boutique watches with swiss movements, but Hamilton isn't one of them. I have a 1920s Hamilton mechanical that's pretty cool--back when they made their own movements in the US.
