Very sad day at Dallas Airshow. A super rare B-17G, named "Texas Raiders" was doing a low fly by when a gaggle of fighters flew overhead. One was a P-63 King Airacobra. This aircraft did a sudden slicing manuever which cut off the wing of the B-17. All died. There are reports that the B-17G had civilians on board which had paid for a B-17 ride. The video is short but shows what happened, filmed by a bystander. Very tragic.

I don't understand HOW that even came to pass. Extremely sad.

Elijah Ballard

Very sad! Just shows how well trained pilots need to be to preform stunts at air shows.

Jesen

Rest in peace to the victims 🙏

Jeff Johnson

What a bummer. So sad on many fronts, but mostly for the people lost and their families.

Chase Ferguson

Absolutely awful. I have done that before to take a ride on a B-17 and B-24. However we took a 45 min scenic ride no other maneuvering aircraft in the space. It was absolutely incredible. This is incredible unfortunate on all front. Pray for these people families.

Grant

Dude, crazy

Windex

Looks like the P-63 was overshooting a rejoin on someone to his left, and didn’t see the B-17 outside of his turn. Very tragic and sad. In light of the B-17 crash 3 years ago at Bradley, I will be surprised if there will be any more rides in warbirds, or even a grounding. It breaks my heart for the lives lost, and the potential to lose the showing of these historic airplanes in flight.

"It breaks my heart for the lives lost, and the potential to lose the showing of these historic airplanes in flight." Exactly. So so sad to see this.

I'm in the Air Force and a big part of what put me on the path to joining was the movie Memphis Belle. I was 10 when I first saw it. There is a scene where a falling 109 cuts a B17 in half after it gets shot down. It was probably the most shocking thing I had ever seen in a movie up to that point in my life. As a kid it kinda shook me up. It was one thing to see it in a movie, but seeing Texas Raiders go down I actually had a physical reaction. If I remember correctly TR was one of only 9 airworthy B17s left in the world. Terrible tragedy and on the day after Veteran's Day no less. Another WWII veteran lost. This one is going to hurt for awhile.

Clint Raby

Very Sad, prayers for everyone touched by this tragedy.

Todd Buffington

as a current pilot toally th p63 fault, totally tragic :(

James Lawson

So horrible! Prayers for the families and spectators is going to be a rough time!

Reed

So sad. Prayers for everyone involved. My grandfather was a bombadier/navigator on a b-17 before being shot down over Germany where he remained a POW for the rest of the war.

Joel Zera

Terrible tragedy

RIP to the folks on board. Passed up a chance to get a ride in that B17 at the Dallas airshow a couple of years ago. The Commemorative Air Force seems to run a great operation keeping these icons of history flying through lots of volunteer work and dedication. They also fly "Fifi",one of two remaining airworthy B-29s. Sad news indeed.

The Nutnfancy Project

Yep. we talk a lot about the B17s on table top so I thought it might interesting

Curran Carini

Rest In Peace. So sad this happened

Robert Harper

Wow, that’s just incredible to see. It’s sad on very many levels. Mostly for the loss of life, and the people impacted by their loss. It makes me think of all the brave airmen that lost their lives preserving our freedom.

Patrick Richards

Terrible! Praying for everyone involved. What a helpless feeling watching them fall to the ground with no options.

Brad Fegan

Oh my God!!!!! I am at a loss of words.

Patrick Cacchioli

Firstly what a terrible loss of life. Secondly a devastating loss of two incredibly rare aircraft. The video was horrific.

David Elkins

Horrible tragedy. Prayers for the families.

David Elkins

I kinda hope it was some kind of mechanical failure in the P63 that caused a freak collision. I know that’s not very likely though.

Outrider950

I am betting that the B17 was obscured by the nose of the Cobra and the pilot never even saw him.

Andrew Stutzman

Mrgunsandgear is spot on, terrible in every way. I found out today via an email from the CapitalAir Wing group as I have ridden with them a few times and even got a chance to fly in a Avenger with their airmen. Fantastic guys who have a true love of what they do!

Colostomybag

There’re not making any more. I thought there was only a handful of b-17s still flying. Hopefully this isn’t the last. From what I heard, they weren’t even doing demonstrations at the time. The b-17 was flying a wide pattern and the cobra was turning base and just didn’t see him. (Just what I heard not necessarily true)

Carioca

Horrible tragedy. Prayers for those that perished. For those interested the Arizona Commemorative Air Force in Mesa, AZ still has handful of WW2 planes that they maintain & fly that you can book rides. A B17G, B25J, T 6 etc. Also a fantastic museum. Another great Air Museum is the Legacy Flight Museum in Rexburg ID. It has a handful of still flying P 51 Mustangs and all kinds of memorabilia and gear.

The P-63 was part of the warbird flight going on at the same time. I would have thought he was looking out the top of the canopy at the other warbirds he was following through the turn and probably never saw the bomber. Sad.

Tim Bone

Gut-wrenching. If that collision happened a couple of hundred yards before the parking lot the falling debris would have killed all the spectators there as well.

Jason Burson

It’s crazy. Some time ago you asked about other tnp adventures and i mentioned a b17 ride and we have since lost 2. CAF is at Conroe Regional, I met up with my BIL a few times there and their hanger was always open and welcoming.

Publius Cato

It's sad, but certainly no sadder than the thousands of young men of the 8th Air Force that died in those same birds over Germany.
