Another full featured systems dive from TNP. This time we'll consider the pros, cons, and fantasies of .50 BMG use. As could be expected I will hammer on the normal stuff here: SAWC, value, frequency of use, and realistic systems integration. Lots of .50 cal shooting with a Barrett M82A1 proceeded this video and it will be shown.

While the cartridge is impressive, an anti-material mission will be hampered by the scarcity and shocking expense of military loads, if you could find them. This is discussed and the focus will be on the proven military use of such rounds. And while some of the following loads are completely legal to have and shoot in your .50, they are hyper expensive unicorns: SLAP, HEIAP, API-T, Raufoss Mk 211, M1022 long-range sniper round, Mk 257, APEI Mk 169 Mod 2, and crazy fun rounds like the M903 headlight.

So most shooter's will be relegated to 660 gr FMJ loads in their probably not-shot-a lot .50 rifle. I have an unusual take on this round btw. Power, range, damage factor, and comparisons with more cost effective rounds (to include .338 Lapua) are shown also. But we'll also discuss the fun and competitive aspect of .50 BMG shooting, a 100% valid reason for running these big boys. Another touchstone, grounded systems discussion for my good, responsible, and awesome audience members. Paid for by donors to TNP...and this one was expensive.

Fact & Fantasy: .50 BMG Philosophy of Use

I’m worried I may hurt my wallet if I watch this.

Ask and ye shall receive

Rob Miller

Ask….and you shall receive!! Thanks Nutin’ Might have to slow down the content, I’m working so much it’s hard to keep up with all these gifts.

The Nutnfancy Project

I might save you some money here...the discussion debunks ownership of 50s to a large degree. But if in a rural area with a large area to protect, legit option

TechNeck

snipers name was Rob Ferlong. in afghanistan I have talked shop with him In my house. He is friends with my buddy who does outfitting. they team uo, rob runs guys through a 3 day rifle course then my buddy takes them out hunting. the longest shot was done by Dallas Alexander in syria... jtf2 he recently did a pod cast on the shaw ryan show. 100% guys rucked them in. 3 man teams, shooter spotter security. .50 BMG, spotter and security run C7s (m16 A3)

Jonathan Owens

Awesome review. Just wish I had that kind of cash sitting around to afford one. In the preview footage where you guys are shooting, every time a round went off, I kept thinking….mo money mo money mo money!!!

The Nutnfancy Project

"...mo money mo money mo money!!!" I started off thinking that too went I was shooting this gun. I found it hampered my testing and what I wanted to do. I just ended up shooting what I wanted to shoot for the data and sucked up the cost. You studs here made it all possible, thank you.

Jonathan Owens

Nutn….my Patreon membership to your channel is money well worth spending. Keep up the awesome work. Been a TNPr going on 10 years now and love ALL the content. In our budget that my wife handles, she has a category called “Jon’s NutnStuff” lol. I put a little aside each month so I can pull the trigger on new gear every once in awhile. Again, thanks for the best channel out there!

Todd Strelka

How about some signed TNP .50 BMG shell casings? Wow, that rifle kicks up some dirt when fired. It is a powerhouse for sure!

Jordan Parker

Great thoughts here Nutn, it made me consider some things I hadn't thought about. Thank you for sharing!

Todd Strelka

I still have my Red Skies .308 case. Thanks!

BadgerTails

I'm in for the signed/#d brass bottle openers @ $10 per, I'd take 4, anybody else?

BadgerTails

My research got hard @ 44" in....;-) Going to archives for BuggetNuster A-10 vids, Danke!

BilboCarter

I looked at owning a .50 BMG a while back. I could have afforded it, but it just wasn't practical due to lack of venues that I could actually shoot at with the rifle. But still. 2KC!!! 2KC!!!! Love shooting .50 BMG, do it every time I'm given the opportunity.

Downtrodden

Fun vid. I have no doubt it draws attention. One weekend at a popular public shooting area in the desert, someone was blasting something VERY big. My wife asked me what it could be. “It ain’t no 308!”

Jeff Freeman

Hathcock used a modified, semi-auto M2. There were no purpose built .50 cal rifles at the time.

Carl Bailey

If you really want to reload, midsouth shooters supply does carry A-Max bullets at $59 per 20 (ouch). And yeah, you definitely need a spotter / pack mule.

Gilbert Cuzdey Jr

Wait a minute. Am I missing something? You can find AP and API rounds for .50 bmg all over the internet. You're not just limited to fmj.

DuginIN

Loved the video, great info. The tracer segment was cool. Savage 110 FCP the affordable.338 Lapua has been one of my favorite GRVs. I still want one. IISA?

Rob Miller

Awesome video. Never shot one and may never. Super cool though. This video highlights why 22 LR is my all time favorite.

Aaron Walker

Either Accuracy or speed or maybe both, I remember Bryan Litz saying something about the proper ratio of bullet diameter to barrel length would have the barrel at 4 ft long. Thats why they aren't accurate.

Colostomybag

I know someone that has a 50, he let me come to his property and shoot it. Cool to say I shot it but I think tactically there is much better ways to spend money, DTNVG for example and with the savings get a 338 and a good 1000 dollar optic. My freind that has one is 6'7" and can dead lift 550lbs and it was a struggle to haul the damn thing around. Definetly a "crew served" or at lease 3 person wepon. Interesting content though, I just will never own one.

Colostomybag

would love to see it, I would love to have a home defense F-104G that rockets out of the house like the germans did but like the 50 its just a bit too much. 338 makes alot more sense.

Jeff Freeman

I know. I really want to get one.

Sonnedude

This was a fun review! Thanks Nutn. F-Bomb and everything

Andrettski

Just 25 min in and something tells me you didn't have to twist Jardine's arm to get him out for this one. Haha.

Andrettski

I sure wish there was a target cam downrange to see the impacts and I can't really hear any of Sean's and Jardine's comments during the shots.

Onewizeguy

I think the Barrett 50 is super cool for it’s primary anti-material purpose.. stopping vehicles, putting rounds through brick walls and mud huts. The hydrostatic shock of those pills alone make it a terrifying close-enough option for soft targets.

Matthew Jantz

Anyone know why I can’t watch the video yet?

Jerome J

Looks like I need to wait with the plebs on YouTube to watch the vid… that sucks

Jerome J

THX BUT I CAN'T FIND THE LINK

Jerome J

I DON'T SEE IT ON RUMBLE OR UGETUBE EITHER

Racing Psychosis

I watched this on Yousuck, but he's got something messed up on the link or something now. It is definitely not on either of his Rumble channels yet. And Ugetube buffers so bad for me that I typically cannot watch anything there.

Erik

PSA Sabre line? Any one own one or any reviews incoming?

Skylar Hobbs

I actually just bought one about a month and a half ago went out and shot it and realized how impractical it was. Turn around and sold it for a profit and bought a sigsauer cross in 308. I also live in a great state of Utah, and realize that there is not a lot of practical uses for a 50. Super glad with my decision.

Jonathan-James

Viewed this on Patron. Great vid Nutn. Holy cow this on is a chunk of money. And rightfully so. I was going to get a 50 when I still lived in CA. Safety Harbor arms sold their bolt action 338 and 50bmg uppers that pinned onto and AR15 lower at a very affordable price, but the feds reclassified the upper to a “firearm.” Slammed that door right in my face. Now I am in a more free state. Might consider it again after I get a couple of other system’s settled.

Timothy Smith

Thanks for the awsome content Nutn !You absolutely went over and above with this one.Awsome dude.

Ben Wagner

I wasn’t excited beforehand (because of the drawbacks you mention) but the video was great. What did you think of the Burris scope? Even for more “normal” sized guns that seems like a high value option.

Jay

I think concussion and TBI are a real consideration with this kind of a platform. I experienced a pretty severe concussion from a sparring session gone wrong in September, and I still can't shoot unsuppressed without risk of symptoms. That foggy feeling one can have after a long range day with highly concussive system, such as a short AK, is a physiological phenomenon that is not without potential long term risk. If one were to get serious about the .50 BMG system I think it would be wise to keep concussion in mind. For me, with my previous concussions, I wouldn't touch one without a suppressor. For others, it may be wise to limit exposure and consider environmentals, such as potential refraction points, like trees and boulders, when setting up a range.

Sonny69

Sorry it took me so long to become a donor! This 50 cal content rocked.

Steve Feeser

That was entertaining. I have no interest in something like this. I think my 30-30 has plenty of recoil.

Nathan Simms aka Darkpriest

Thank you for bringing up probably the most forgotten part of military operations and equipment. LOGISTICS AND SUPPORT. Every good pilot, driver, or operator I've ever met, including you, always mentions how crucial those support folks were. 50BMG POU? Fun gun for civilians.

BadgerTails

GRV sidebar: 226 vs 227 vs 228 vs 229 ? Maybe you already have done it?

Jesse (Sphinx)

Enjoyed this one. As much 2nd cool as they are, I'd already drawn similar conclusions. I've only shot the bolt action. For what I'm doing, 6.5 CM AR10 reaches out plenty far with plenty of energy. If I needed to go 1 mile, it'd be another Barrett offeting--the MRAD in 338 LM. $4000 and a heck of a lot lighter.

William H

I love the video, but... the fact that you're doing this 15+ years into the Project pretty much matches up with my interest in buying one!

STLParkRanger13 (IG: Sharpshooterjon)

I like the idea of someone on the team having a .50bmg rifle for the capabilities it brings, but I'm not sure if it's reasonable on the firepower:mobility ratio. Even as the centerpiece of a three person element, it's going to be slow moving.

david rockwell

A Yeoman's job as usual for this POU video production. The data analysis combined with your field testing was very interesting. Mystique does impart a fair amount aggrandizement into the cartridge and platform. As a neophyte/novice medium range shooter, higher BC platforms are a goal when experiential plateau is attained. Thank you for the continued effort and dedication.

That’s the best that the wife is on board with a little budgeting for some fun stuff.

hoplite ⚔️

Love the TNP shell casings. So cool.

hoplite ⚔️

Interesting content, it helps put other systems into perspective. I want to know more about the building you are in. Love the behind the scenes TNP stuff and the systems that make it all work.
