ENGLISH/ESPAÑOL
Hello everybunny!Today we show you the creation process of the secret project we've wanted to show you for so long. That's right, this week we will post all the WIPs for the CatNap plush, from Poppy Playtime chapter 3. We'll divide the WIPs in 3 posts, so it isn't too long and we can explain every step. We hope you enjoy it a lot!
First, we'll say that we are huge horror game fans, specially indies. And it was one night past midnight when we were contacted by MOB Entertainment's CEO. We screamed with excitement hahaha. You know that we've worked with several games, but this was going to be one of the biggest ones and one that we had been following close since the release.
The project itself was making a plush of chapter's 3 main monster; CatNap. At first, the only reference we had was the concept art of the character sitting down. It wasn't a very defined sketch, but enough to be able to work with it. So we accepted the job and started working.
This character's head had a big problem; its open mouth. You know that we've made open mouths before, but they always had a big muzzle or jaw. This time, the mouth was part of the head. It's practically 80% of it! So it was difficult to design. They wanted it to be deep and with the mouth's creppy curves well defined.
So first, we sculpted a base of the head and mouth. We didn't want it to be the perfect shape, we only wanted a base pattern for the mouth. We used the tape method to get the first patterns and we did a first head test. At first, we were going to make the lips part of the head pattern, they were the same piece. But we quickly realised that it wouldn't work. So at the second test we already changed the mouth to have separate lip patterns that would go over the head base. It improved a lot, but still needed a ton of work.
We did a couple more test and around test 3-4 we already liked where it was going. But when we showed them the tests, they told us that it wasn't right at all.
What happened with this project is that over the process, the character's design changed and they sent us new references several times, where we had to stop and change things we thought were done to fit the new design. For example, the concept art had prominent eyebrows that were later removed, and the mouth was bigger and more creppy every time.
We did a couple more tests enlarging the mouth, but it was difficult because the deadline was approaching and we were still lost about what they exactly wanted.
Then, around one month before the deadline, they gave us the final character design. And it was then where they told us that the plush was going to appear on the promotional videos for the chapter. Until then, we thought they just wanted it to promote in live events or as an office decoration. That's why they needed the plush to be exactly like the final design. We were super happy but nervous at the same time, it was a lot of pressure and an amazing opportunity. Our name was going to appear in the game's credits! They were actually really nice and they gave us more time and money to make sure the plush was as perfect as possible, and that all the design changes that gave us extra work were properly paid for.
So now, with the final references and knowing we had more time and money, we discarded the patterns we had and started over with the base we had. We made big changes to the head pattern and we tried to make the mouth as big as possible with a huge defined smile. And in test 6 we got what we were looking for!!
If you look at all the tests, you will see how they evolved. The change is amazing. And you can see when they gave us new references that helped us defining the shapes. We're super proud of how it turned out. The mouth was as deep as they wanted, the smile was creepy and all the shapes were well defined.
There was still a lot to make, but we already loved it and knew it was going in the right direction, since the most important part of the plush was done ^^
In the next WIP we will show you how we made the body!
----ESPAÑOL----
Hello everybunny!
