"Faux steel bends" as they're also known, are an important skill to have in your arsenal of tricks as a lead guitarist. Not only can they provide you with an endless supply of snappy, twangy country licks, but they can also be used in a much more ambient, layered soundscape type of a way to add ethereal beauty to your playing.

Volume swells are seen as something of a "dark art", but like anything, spend some time getting these movements into your muscle memory and before long you'll find yourself 'violin-ing" left, right and centre! ;)

Aside from all of that, this is a good lesson for exploring triads and double stops too!

Very inspiring. Last time I tried the pinky stuff I thought I'd better buy a volume pedal. Now I'll try again.

Wayne America

I am working on Charlie Christian right now although I played through some of your other country stuff. I do have a Tele so can't emulate the volume swells. When I first heard this, I thought it was reverse reverb.

Peter Kelly

Alex, do you think a volume pedal would give the same result? Pedal steel players use a volume pedal all the time. Goodrich are the make of choice https://goodrichsoundcompany.com . I must get my ShoBud pedal Steel out of storage!

Nice, glad you're open to a bit of Folk being explored in these lessons too :)

Hey Peter, thanks for the question.. did you see the part of the video where I address that very question about pedal vs hands? In short, for this type of playing, the pedal is seriously lacking in my opinion! The hands are so tactile and reactive for this type of thing.. would be a shame not to exploit that ability we have to be so highly dextrous! .. plus, always nice to not NEED additional gear ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

Do you have a Strat?.. or basically any guitar with a volume knob that's within reach would work.

Wayne America

Yes, definitely. Also, I would be really up for anything in (surf guitar, American mid-60s Garage bands, 60's psychedelic or later neo-psychedelic up to the present day. By the way, I found you by searching on You Tube on specific songs - I am here because your presentation is consistently immaculate. If you were to expand the scope of styles covered, then I suspect your subscriber base would increase accordingly.

This sounds so great. Good telecaster feature--the guitar-amp tones, the volume knob, the way they feel and sound up the neck. After watching this a week ago, I had the chance to give the knobs on a 50s esquire (original knobs, replacement period-correct pots) a spin. You are definitely on to something with your thoughts on the tactile connection there. So cool after this lesson. Thanks.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Nat, glad you enjoyed the lesson! Have fun working those controls! ;)

Hi Alex, I'm a bit late to the party so to speak. I'm so glad I found your channel, your lessons are great and easier to understand than what I find on Truefire. This Country bend exercise is exactly what I was looking for, so now it's time to woodshed!
