The First official entry in a new series on "Must-Know Jazz Standards". I'll likely do one of these per month or so, (with the usual content in-between of course.. blues, country, jazz, Americana etc). The purpose of these videos will be to show you how to play the melody and chords for some of the essential jazz standards.

I'll show you some of my preferred options regarding keys, chord changes and voicings. At a later date, we will circle back around and look at chord melodies for these pieces as well as improvisation tactics!

Love this tune. Looking forward to more in this series 👍

Tim Kremer

Great Idea! Very helpful and fun!

MarkF

Love it and certainly lots to learn here, but being a solo player I’d also like to learn as chord melody so keep those beautiful chord melodies of yours coming too?

John Petitt

Perfect! Thank Alex! I concur about the chord melody.

Daghan

Nice idea. Thanks for this one

John Vecchio

Love the focus on a standard once a month! Thank you - watching it right now…

dan gardiner

I've heard this tune on a CD I own a hundred times...but couldn't remember who the artist was...until I found the CD under the front seat on my car...Grant Green..this will be a fun play along!

Johan

Alex - Do you think highlighting bars and labeling them as to their function would be a good idea? Or do you think that would slow down the process of hearing them as such? Also…I spied that Novo😀

Ty Miller

Most definitely rich in context 💎💎💎

Eirik Kildal

Great concept and lesson! Thanks! Will you do a lesson on «All the things you are» as an episode of this format? Thanks a lot Brgds Eirik Kildal

Alex Farran Guitar

Absolutely!.. and that'll be a big one for sure.. already filmed it, just working out the best way to edit/present it at the moment as it's so vast!

Alex Farran Guitar

Sure thing.. I'll circle back around to these pieces and tackle chord melody and improvisation. Impossible to fit it all in one video without it ending up over an hour in length 😅

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Mark! Oh for sure!.. I'll circle back around to these pieces and tackle chord melody and improvisation. Impossible to fit it all in one video without it ending up over an hour in length 😅 My goal will be to teach you guys how to make your own chord melody arrangements.. and that simply must start with this first step of learning the basic changes and the melody 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Honestly, I think that's a really beneficial thing for you to do.. print the chords out or write out a fresh chord chart, and label the functions above. Learning the analyse things harmonically is so important. And well spotted on the Novo!.. coming soon to a video near you! 😅

Jan Geerts

This is beautiful. And I thought I'd never manage this, but I kind of do after 1,5 hrs already. The sardonic joy with which you throw in those chords isn't quite as evil as I first expected after all.

Gert De Groof

Going through this fantastic first lesson of what is undoubtedly to be a phenomenal series…I had two thoughts going through my head: 1. A walking bass tutorial on any of these standards would be great. 2. I think I’ve never seen you make a lesson on soloing over standards as such which would also be great. Just thoughts, just sharing. Thanks again Alex, I really love going through more standards in the future. Take care.

Jean-Luc

I propose "nuages" as the next standard, it's a fabulous gypsy guitar theme

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks for the suggestion buddy. I assume you’ve seen my Nuages chord melody lesson already? But I guess I could do just a basic changes and melody lesson too 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alex Farran Guitar

Great thinking Gert, I will add a walking bass lesson to my list of things to cover very soon. Thank you! Indeed.. I will do more soloing studies for standards soon too.. I did that one for "Beautiful Love" that's worth checking out if you haven't seen it already. Cheers buddy!

Alex Farran Guitar

Hehe thanks Jan, glad you're enjoying the slightly evil chord voicings! 😅

Tim Wallace

Terrific lesson, looking forward to more. I'm a sucker for tunes that move from a major chord to a parallel minor. The descending half-step chords over a bass note is a really cool idea, creates a falling or drifting kind of feel. I didn't know this tune much other than by reputation, it is great. I find it useful to find vocal versions of these songs and try to memorize the melody, not just by playing but by being able to hear it in my head regardless. Found the Sarah Vaughan version of course, but here's one by a homegrown UK artist, Sara Dowling, who is just stunning. The facial expressions are a little distracting, but man, what a voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IecAF_Su0k

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Tim, glad you enjoyed it! I do exactly the same thing.. I get to know a ton of different classic versions of a tune before making a start on it. I know the lyrics for all the jazz tunes I play, and that helps inform me on which choices to make when composing a chord melody or comping. I'll check out the Sara Dowling video, thanks for the link! 🍻

Tim Wallace

I'm embarrassed to say it took me a very long time to figure out how important learning the vocal melody of a song is to being able to play a song effectively really is and only when Jody Fisher recommended listening to Frank Sinatra's version of Angel Eyes when I was trying to learn that tune. I kept wondering why it was so easy to learn chord melody versions of Beatles songs and so difficult to learn chord melodies of the old show tunes. Well I grew up with Beatles songs and I can hear the vocal melody in my head. There's at least a couple of lessons in there I think. It works in reverse too. For example, the Stanley Turrentine song "Sugar". After hearing Rare Silk create a vocal line for the melody, that song became much easier for me to play (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGZS42Bg24g). George Benson's solo on the CTI recording is a treasure trove. Manhattan Transfer did the same with Chick Corea's "500 Miles High". Lastly, the pros know this principle and use it to great effect. Bill Frisell's tribute to John Lennon, "All We Are Saying", is a great example. Frisell spent a lot of time learning the words to the songs he covered, which I believe makes the melodies in the instrumental version come to life in a way not possible otherwise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Log5fKfz8H4

What’s happening Alex! I just joined today and first wanted to say so sorry for your loss!

Jah

I’m not a Jazz Player yet , but this song and others from you that I’ve been studying like “Beautiful Love” and “ I found a New Baby” have opened my eyes and playing to an entirely new level. Thank you so much for these amazing chords and all the hand cramps!

Alex Farran Guitar

My pleasure buddy, I’m so glad to hear that you’re enjoying these pieces! So much more to come too! 👌🏻

GoofyRaf

Hey Alex, I went deep today inside Green Dolphin… In the alternate chords pdf, what could explain the presence of the F7 measure 7 section A. I know there’s sometimes no explanation, it’s there and that’s all, but just in case… Thanks Alex. The more i “play” this tune, the more I love it. This CM7 going to the m7… grrrrrr, and the C pedal during the major triad descent… love it. Gives me goosebumps ! Thanks Alex 🙏

GoofyRaf

Hey ! Want some tunes to add to your list ? Caravan, take the A train, and Round about midnight. What do you think ? Not bad right ? Thanks Alex, it was just to say, I know you can’t do all 😉🙏

Greg Knittel

Great stuff! I suggest Misty, Wave, My Cherie Amour, Bluesette, and Ain’t Misbehaving … thanks. Glad i found you

Julie Altnether

This was the first jazz standard I learned, and it was neat to revisit it again through your video! What a great tune -- thanks for all your hard work; love the lessons :)
