After seeing Johan’s post over on our discourse forum where he was asking about drone apps to practice scales over, I was reminded of this video I uploaded some time ago.

The digital tanpura machine I’m using here was purchased when I was over in India.. it sounds great and is very inspiring, but sadly it has a tendency to electrocute me everytime I touch it! 🤪

Nowadays to get my drone fix, (free from injury), I like to use the Electroharmonix “Freeze” pedal which I highly recommend.

Now, you might be asking: “But why use a drone for scale practice?.. what’s the point?”. Well, with a drone, you can set it to create a wash of sound that omits or includes particular intervals, therefore not locking you down to a specific tonality. In the example above I’m using a drone that only contains the Root and Fifth of a chord, therefore allowing me to drift freely between different scales/modes rather than setting a rigid tonality for me to stick to. So you could play around with the mixolydian where you’re using a flatter 7th, and the next moment switch the a natural 7th and imply a modal shift to Ionian. I’m bringing in a lot of Lydian sounds in that video, using the #IV interval as a kind of tension note, before resolving to Ionian or Mixolydian.

Also, because there is no third in the drone, you can even switch between major and minor tonalities as and when you choose.

It’s a hard thing to describe in writing, so I’ll do a video about it soon to help shed more light on it.

In short; Drones = creative freedom for practicing scales!

Morning Meditation - Indian drone guitar practice routine with digital tanpura - (modal workout)

One of my favourite morning practice routines! Grab a coffee, a stick of incense, then pick a key centre and just weave your way around it.. switching between different modal sounds.. in this case I’m in D and weaving between Ionian, Lydian and Mixolydian tonalities. (I’m not really a modal thinker.. more just choosing when to bring in the #4 or flattened 7th to create a satisfying melody.. but the modal terms above would be the proper way to describe it I guess) I’m using a digital tanpura box that I bought on my travels in India more than 10 years ago.. this thing is great for providing a nice drone.. but it’s a death trap and literally electrocutes me whenever I touch it! Howl in the Wilderness

My raga guitar tips: The freeze pedal with a very slow tremolo gets pretty darn close to a tanpura. Use only root and fifth notes for the drone. Dropping the 6th string to D gives you three drone strings and three melody strings. Practice modes on a single string and experiment with sliding and bending between notes, and quick pull offs.

Oh, and the iTablaPro app is the best. All the pro Indian musicians I’ve studied with use it.

Johan

Thank you for this Alex! This is not an endorsement, but for those playing unplugged, I have found the free version of the Sonofield app serves this purpose well.

Also I purchased Indian Drummer has fantastic tabla and pick your drone note!

Rupert Hawkes

Or run both apps at same time and run into a big reverb!

Stephen

Oh wow, probably not quite the same thing, but this inspired me and I've just lost a couple of hours that should have been spent tidying up the garden playing over YouTube drone videos, mostly just with pentatonics as my scale knowledge is still a bit ropey, but still so much fun! Incredible how creative playing over such a simple sound can feel, and can feel that way without getting bored for a long time!

tyler taube

I gotta get one of these drone machines!

George Rebeiro

It's all your fault, Alex. Now I gotta get me one.Actuallt,I'll use it on the bagpipe solo in Long Way to the Top and You're the Voices Can't wait for it!

Jake Rashkind

I'm a big fan of the Freeze. Thanks for this. Very inspiring.

Greg F Germano

I've used iTabalaPro for this sort of practice, but will have to explore the freeze pedal. iTabalaPro does have nice tabala to go along with the drone.

Jerome Oks

Absolutely fantastic. It blew my mind. Well done, Sir.

Jerome Oks

I was getting worked up about getting a Freeze, then it just dawned on me (great genius that I am) that the Freeze wouldn't do an Indian style of drone by itself.

Zoran

That’s exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks a lot Alex!

Alex Farran Guitar

No, that's very true. I think of the freeze as more of a synth/pad sound.. think first chord of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"
