A deep dive into the chords and lead work for this slice of early Beatles magic!

George’s guitar playing was always so melodic, tasteful and cultured, and this tune is a fine example of that. We really hear this influences shining through in this pop/jazz classic!.. from Chet Atkins and Django Reinhardt to Mickey Baker and many more!

I took my favourite aspects from a handful of different live versions, as well as the album version itself and put them all together in this study. Not only do we learn his intro, solo and outro, but we also look at his clever use of triads to craft neat lead parts behind the vocal throughout the verses.

We also learn John Lennon’s preferred chord voicings for the rhythm section.. a fascinating lesson in itself!

Hopefully you’ll leave this lesson feeling inspired, and with a few new ideas for crafting your own super tasty lead parts!

People often ask me “how do I apply triads and make them really stick?!”.. well, this is a sure fire way to do that! Analyse how the masters used them, and then borrow those ideas for yourself in your own music!

Alex, Thank-you for this great rendition of Early George Harrison. Can you do a rendition of Something with that iconic Harrison solo?

Hi Alex - I sent you a PM about a Marc Ribot article in the Guardian last week, did you see my message? The article is at https://tinyurl.com/5c4u6nkc Let me know if it is behind a paywall and I'll send it as a PDF.

Did Robin Hood really exist or is he just a fictional character?

Haha, well like most of these folklore stories, there is certainly some truth to it but I’m sure the stories have become wildly exaggerated! We have a lovely statue of him here in the city right next to Nottingham Castle, and some great historic sites/museums to visit if you ever find yourself Nottingham-bound! 🏹🏰

Ah yes, thank you for that! I was able to view it, a great article! Have you listened to the new stuff?.. pretty killer! 👌🏻😎

Thank you Michael, glad you enjoyed it my friend! Ah yes, I’ll do a lesson on “Something” for sure! 😎

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Tyrone! Oh sure, definitely stylistically similar, and Buddy was a big favourite of John’s too!

Scott Deeg

Another amazing lesson, and I'm so far behind already!!! As for an idea ... you mentioned Chet Atkins a couple times there. Do you have a favorite Chet song? Something you've given the Farran treatment to?

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Ron! Ah yes, I agree with Tim. I'd go one step further and say that there are no genres full stop! It's all just music! 🤷🏻‍♂️

At 15 when they were on Ed Sullivan I still remember someone telling me the Beatles weren't any good, since they only knew 3 chords and went my whole lifetime believing that. Guess I stand corrected.
