Swampy, greasy, dirty, raw, overdriven Texas blues riffage! This is a deep diving lesson on how to make your riff-based rhythm playing really pop while adding spicy little lead embellishments... all while staying close to our open position G minor pentatonic scale!

We’ll be incorporating open strings, hybrid picking and plenty of Billy Gibbons-esque swagger while laying down a sickeningly punchy groove that never strays from the Deep South pocket. Low string set 2nd inversion triads and 70’s classic rock shenanigans also included for good measure! 😉

It’s currently 33°C here and humid as hell — the scene is set for this one 🫠🎸🔫

Man, that's hot!! Hope a dip in these swampy waters will cool you down a little! 🤪

James

so coooooooolll!!

MarkF

Love how much body groove you put into it. I am mainly living on my sailboat during the summer and brought just a Gretch Jim Dandy acoustic and a cheap nylon classical onboard. I’ll put this lesson in the “save for later” as it looks, how shall I say “heavy” cheers!

Don Harris

Awesome lesson! Love this sound and your excellent explanations

David Lemon

Aww I love that tribute to Louis there, Alex. And this lesson is just my pace… excited to dive in here.

Jordan Zimmerman

What’s the over under on you doing a Jimmy Reed study?

Gert De Groof

Rhythmeen is such a badass album.

Dr. Michael Horwitz, DPM

Seems like you are hitting the open G string at the SAME TIME and NOT sliding into it. Can you please clareify. thanks. In other words, the timing seems like the tab is not right. Hope you can see what i am getting at.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Michael, I’m striking the D string 3rd fret with the plectrum at the same time as picking the open G string with my 2nd finger, then quickly sliding up to the 5th fret of the D string WITHOUT blocking the ringing open G string.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you David, I appreciate that! Really glad you enjoyed the lesson too mate 🙏🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Mark! Wow, living on a sailboat for summer sounds like a dream to me! 🥲

Ran Bush

Hi Alex - thanks for these ideas, very cool licks indeed. Am I missing the backing track and tab here, or is it not available yet? I see them on the gum road link. Don't mean to rush you ... 8D

Brendan Allen

What a great lesson- really fun to play! Love the open strings ringing out in the B section. Thanks Alex

Robert Oot

Excellent work. I feel that the role of sweeping and the ringing of “dirty” notes is under appreciated by many players.

Paul Hodgson

Any chance of a bonus tab of that country lick? ;)

robert beyer

Great stuff. Great down and dirty sound. Thanks for your thorough explanation. I love the chord melody stuff too. It takes me a while to get it but it is so worth it. I would put my vote in for "I could writer a book" by Roger's and Hart if your were looking for suggestions. One of my favorite songs. Great changes and the way it steps out of then back into the primary key in the last verse while the lyrics talk about making 2 lovers out of friends. Genius. Thanks again.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Robert, glad you enjoyed it! Sure thing, I'll add that song to the list, thanks for the suggestion!

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi mate, they're here for sure. I always post them here instantly. Do make sure you're fully opening the post to view it and not just seeing the "preview"

Timo Peedu

Crispy, gritty and deliciously groovy.

Awesome lesson Alex. I have been looking for some gritty swampy licks to dig into. When I stumbled upon your lessons, I knew I had discovered someone special. Love your articulate explanations and inspired playing. You have a new follower. Cheers Rob
