There's very little in the World of guitar that is more rewarding than creating your own arrangements of your favourite songs. Combining melody, harmony and embellishments with your own expressions and artistic leanings we end up with a complete picture of a song.. a musical rendering for solo guitar. Something you can play without any backing tracks, additional band members or vocals.

When friends and family visit and say "Hey, why don't you play us something on that guitar of yours!".. you can finally sit down and play actual, recognisable songs! For many guitarists this is an issue, but it really needn't be! As you'll see in today's lesson, the process of making unaccompanied arrangements for guitar can be extremely simple and down-right logical!

This of course works equally well on electric and acoustic so just grab whatever is nearby and follow me through my own process in arranging one of my favourite John Lennon Beatles songs.

Just beautiful (your playing and lesson), but it is tough, very tough in the sense that as a somewhat ok player songs like these ooze feel and space and emotion and also technique galore and I am so rigid when I play technical fingering pieces. Anyway work in progress which is ok. In this vain I’d love Tom Waits, Rickie Lee Jones, Nick Drake and as you mentioned Beach Boys “In My Room” which I think Rosie would appreciate!

Very nice. Need the magic hat to make it work though. I'll work it a bit anyway. Cheers. Have an adult beverage and relax after a job well done.

Very nice Alex. So much learning again in this video. The great thing is that we can learn so much by watching, even though I don’t have the time to do this song at the present time. The process in itself is invaluable its own right. Thank you.

Thanks Mark, and yes I do agree, sometimes these are the types of things that are the hardest to learn and improve on. The more detail you hear and notice, the more you get that in your own playing, so it sounds like you're on the right track! Thanks for the suggestions, I'll add "In My Room" to the list for sure!

Oh yes, 1969, just out of college the band living on a farm in Catlett, Virginia. The wife and I are laying in bed in trenched by the Beatles. What a great time what a great album. I wonder how many of your students were alive then, fresh home from Woodstock. Nothing unusual here another great job Alex. Love to hear you play.
