C.W Stoneking's "Gon' Boogaloo" record. Lofi Tom Waits vibes, meets delta blues and rockabilly, although released in 2016 this thing sounds like it was found washed up on a ship wreck in the 1800's! This dude has real feel, and such a great sound. I saw him touring the record back when it came out and he puts on a killer live show. He also uses some pretty choice gear.. a vintage Gretsch 6120 and a vintage brown-panel Fender Princeton amp. It's well worth checking out the rig rundown he did for premiere guitar a while back for a closer look at his gear and playing;

Incredible album and artist!

I got to open for CW some years ago. It was really fun to joke around with him and his band. I saw him solo after that. He's the real deal. He has this unique energy when he plays that is really transformative, like the air changes or he invokes spirit; like gospel. He has several instructional videos on youtube about how to play his songs.

Damn, this is kind of nuts. I joined your Patreon last week and this was going to be one of my asks on a future Q&A; if you could deconstruct some of C.W.'s playing. Please!

Benoit Touche

Love this record. Discovered years ago. A great album. Plus the guy looks really cool 😎

Greg Finlayson

I live in Australia and have seen him live a lot of times. He is the real deal. Every time I go home saying to myself. ‘Play less, feel more’. All his albums are great.

Jeffery Scott McWhorter

I was unfamiliar with this, but in addition to the killer lessons I wasn't expecting a cool listening rec! thanks!

Stephen Mahlstedt

Thanks, Alex. I hadn’t heard of C.W. before your post. I’m stoked after my first session with the album!!

Jerome Oks

Most original groovy soulful, joyous album I have heard in long time. It's been looping on my imaginary turntable all day!

Andrew R

Wow..! Sounds historic. Love the balance in the mix - crunchy but sensitive still. Great recommendation thanks

Gert De Groof

Love this guy! Real authentic sounding. Saw him live once, great stuff. That rig rundown was great. Would have sworn to have heard some 'Stardust' in dat opening song of his...?

Patrick McKinney

CW has several tutorials on youtube, check em out!

Chris Bristow

Thanks for the eye and ear opener Alex! Never heard of him and that is my loss, but sure hearing him now.

Very cool Gert, always a man of great taste! ;) Hmm, yes I hear the similarity to Stardust too!

Stephen Mahlstedt

Totally! I ordered two CDs of this album. One for me, and the other for my 12-year-old grandson. I’m trying to expose him to as much wonderful music as possible.

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha wow, quite the coincidence! Yes, I'll definitely do a lesson on one of his tunes soon!

Am I the only one who finds the way notifications do not take you to where a comment or a like was made to your post/comment? It's easy to write/code. I suppose they might be using a framework written by a 3rd party and are at the vendor's mercy to get off their ass and fix what I consider to be a bug. I will report it to Patreon.

I agree, the platform is really not the most efficient in the way it deals with comments, replies and messages etc. Super clunky!

Julie Altnether

Wow, he has a really incredible feel -- such an interesting person. It's as though he's 200 years old!! I'm hooked, and have been listening to the catalogue -- thx for bringing him to my/our attention!!

I discovered him years ago when I was pulling apart Ragged and Dirty on my rez. His was by far the best version on the youtube, right down to his stories about drinking away his money and losing his band. I downloaded Jungle Blues after and spun it in perpetuity from that day forward. What a peach! I couldn’t find that video last I checked, although it’s been replaced by a slew of others, and even covers by fans. Glad to see his music proliferate. I too had the pleasure of seeing him live in a small venue in Montreal years back. I can die happy now.

That's awesome Mike, really glad to see another fan of his on here!

Huge fan of CW, love this recording!
