Learning to embellish around your chord shapes with soulful licks and double stop riffs is an essential part of progressing your rhythm guitar playing.

I often refer to these moves simple as “Hendrix-isms”, but of course they take influence from many places, Curtis Mayfield, Cornell Dupree, Steve Cropper to name just a few.. I do have lessons on each of their styles by the way so do check the links in the description if that interests you!

I see these things as “broken chords”, or “chordal fragments” and they fit right at home in that soul, Motown and blues vibe. Join me in this lesson as I draw out, in detail, the road-map of fundamentals required to make these sounds for yourself!

All I can say is wow!! What a lesson. I have never come across anyone who teaches in this way. Motivating, full of ideas to expand repertoire, interesting. . I really can’t think of anything more absorbing to work on. We are so lucky! Thanks so much Alex.

Carlos Funk

Hi Alex, back from a couple months in Vietnam where I saw a guitar or two but did not touch them. It seems to have helped. Glad to be back and following your lessons again

Alex Farran Guitar

Wow I bet that was a fun time! Glad to have you back with us my friend! 🙏🏻🍻

Tyrone Miller

Can't go wrong with concepts like this.Love the colorful flavors'🤗🤗🤗

JonB

Always enjoy these drops and continually impressed with the variation of styles presented.

John Petitt

Wonderful lesson and guitar tone to match!

Timothy Daniels

As someone old enough to have seen Cornell Dupree and Jimi Hendrix in person, it’s a great ah ha moment to learn that they were playing little bits and pieces of chords. I didn’t play the guitar then and it was a giant mystery.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Jon! I still feel like I’ve only scratched the very surface!

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s no nice to hear Timothy, thank you! Jealous you got to see them in person! 👌🏻😎

George Rebeiro

Ah ha moments aplenty, Alex.Thinking i may call in sick so I can get to these ideas right away. Your fault for being so informative!

Sava Kalbachou

jeez, so warm, authentic and gritty! I'm almost drowning in the sound. Amazing recommendation, Alex! Thank you! 🙏🏻

Timothy Daniels

The funny thing was I had no idea who Cornell Dupree was, except that he had replaced Hendrix in the King Curtis Band. We went to see King Curtis but Cornell was great because 2 hrs of sax can be a bit much:)

Mike Schaefer

Nice to see the picture of Louis on your amp!

martyn spooner

A great lesson I remember when I started messing with Hendrixisms and what an aha moment it was and changed my whole approach to rhythm, nice one Alex, for people who are unaware of this concept you have just given them years of fun and you cannot get a much better gift cheers

Dan T

Very nice stuff!

GerryOL

Alex this is pure gold. So many lightbulb moments to help unlock the fretboard is an intuitive, approachable and musical manner. The double stops are great also to really hear the intervals without having to analyse them.

This is one of those lessons where you don’t realize how valuable it is until you dig into it. It’s an incredible workout to build that muscle memory. I feel like a different player after playing this non-stop yesterday. I’ve already incorporated a lot of this into my improvising.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Mike, that beautiful piece of art was made by a fellow-Patreon member, Dan Gardiner and means a lot to me. I'll be putting it up on the wall soon :)

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Martyn, I'm with you.. these tricks will last a life time! Not a day goes by that I don't use them!

Alex Farran Guitar

Lovely to hear that Nick, thanks for the comment! Really glad you're already applying this stuff!

nick kizirnis

WOW. I’ve been away for a couple of months and just now getting back to lessons. This is amazing! I can’t wait to dig into this lesson over the holiday weekend!!

Alex Farran Guitar

That's great Nick! Glad you're digging the new stuff! Hope you had a good break mate?

Simon Modig

Beautiful lesson, Alex. One of the playing styles that you should just keep working on forever. Useful, beautiful, easy to tone down and ramp up

Julie Altnether

Ah man, this sounds so wonderful. Diggin' into this now -- I also love the Rosie outtakes :)

Ran Bush

Outstanding, as usual. Thanks Alex. I haven't looked at all the comments, so I don't know if anyone else mentioned this, but I sure am hearing this style lick in the intro to the Beatles’ version of "Don't Let Me Down".

Bruce Levin

A perfect Thanksgiving weekend to dive into this lesson! Great as usual.

Hello Alex - As a recent addition to your Patreon I wanted to tell you how much value I'm getting out of your lessons and materials. I've played guitar and bass for years - mainly in cover bands - and being firmly from the "Scales are for fish...show me how the tune goes" school of playing, your lessons are a revelation for me! Linking the changes on the fretboard and how I can add my own ideas to these is allowing me to finally understand what it is I'm doing!! This lesson - Rhythm chops - is an absolute gold mine of treasures giving the opportunity to extend my playing and dare I say it....help conquer the fish stuff!! I now even understand what comes after A in the CAGED thing (wink) The materials you provide, tab etc are top class and invaluable - getting me out of my established "go to" comfort frets - and instead venturing towards new shapes and alternative ideas on previously unemployed and lonely areas of the neck. Massive thanks for what you are doing on your channel!!!

CRAIG R BRADFORD

Hey Alex Love the lesson as always! Any way to get a click track in front of the track to know when to start? Thanks!

Benoit Touche

I absolutely love this lesson. When I first saw it, I never imagined it would give me such a hard time. It’s way trickier than it looks (at least for me)—trying to nail both that groove and the constant flow. You play it so well! :) I love it. Thanks for this one! Any more like this, please?

Bill

Superb!

Why Ami only seeing zip files ? I can’t download the printed paper lesson

Alex Farran Guitar

What do you mean buddy?.. a zip file is simply a container that holds multiple files within one download. Just download the zip file and it’ll contain everything you need! If you need technical assistance, then check out my FAQ post with step by step instructions.

Ok, I got it. Guess just a different format than im use to. Love the lesson, simple yet a bit tricky. Its helping me play better
