My Valentines day gift to you all is a no-nonsense lesson on how to elevate your blues soloing with the use of a simple dominant 7th arpeggio! With the help of my trusty looper, we lay down a groove on a single A7 chord and explore ways of incorporating our dominant 7th arpeggios into our existing blues scale and pentatonic vocabulary. It's this fusing of ideas that creates authentic blues lines.

This is a straight to the point, and rather loose-form lesson where you'll watch me practice these concepts in real time, with the hopes that you will follow suit and get your hands dirty. Learning HOW to learn is one of the most important things I can offer, and if done correctly you'll see steady and quantifiable progress, I assure you.

The accompanying materials contain all of the minor blues scale shapes and all of the A7 arpeggio shapes (using the CAGED system as a way of organisation). I'd highly recommend replicating this entire process on a new chord each and every day. Use the cycle of fourths to find the next one up, ie:

Day 1: A7

Day 2: D7

Day 3: G7

Day 4: C7

Day 5: F7

Day 6: Bb7

Day 7: Eb7

Day 8: Ab7

Day 9: Db7

Day 10: Gb7

Day 11: B7

Day 12: E7

And there you have it.. after 12 days you'll have covered each key and your familiarity and there-fore comfort levels with the application of these arpeggios will have improved far more than many who toil away passively at this process over the course of many wasted years!

So, who's up for the challenge?!.. Raise your hands! 🙌🏻

Your partner will truly have something to swoon over this Valentine's Day when they hear the improvement in your soloing! ;)

P.:S: One day after uploading this, I have now added my actual A7 chord loop as a downloadable audio file below as I had a ton of requests to do so. (I've also included it within the zip file to be thorough).

Good morning Alex. Thanks again for a great lesson

Jim Wingard

I am enjoying this lesson, Alex. I love this type of lesson which breaks the concepts into smaller pieces which are easier for my level of playing.

Thomas

Thank you Soul Man for this lesson, as well as the pre-work post a few days ago. It may take me more than 12 days to complete the assignment though.

John Olenski

A box of blues on Valentine’s Day. Pretty sweet. Thanks Alex. I’m going to enjoy this challenge.

Mark Kreitz

Sweet! Though, ever since you did that lesson a few months back that featured a flattened 2nd, I can’t stop throwing that in on a dominant 7 arpeggio. Sounds a bit off but in the best way!

Bob Marsh

Absolutely love this! I’m on it now! 👏👏👍🙏

Carlos Funk

My hand is up...what great teaching.....what with all the negative aspects of the internet......this is just so darn positive.....to have a teacher like you, and this trove of lessons, it's such a great thing that you're doing.....impossible to have this kind of help and excellence so widely available in the past when I started playing. I'm very thankful that I got hooked on to it. And by the way, video quality, sound quality, feel, editing and general vibe....so A+

KD

Excellent. Another concept that would be very helpful is a discussion or lesson on phrasing. Personally I find it very difficult to break out from standard, repetitive rhythmic patterns. Any hints would be appreciated.

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha no problem Thomas, cycle that 12 day routine around a handful of times and you’ll see amazing things start to happen! 🫡

Jason Sheriff

This is gold Alex - look forward to when you drop the other arpeggio lessons .....

Elliot Swain

Another pleasure to follow along. Any chance to tab out a few go-to licks that you use during improv?

Alex Farran Guitar

Quick update guys: one day after uploading this, I have now added my actual A7 chord loop as a downloadable audio file below as I had a ton of requests to do so. (I've also included it within the zip file to be thorough).

Jake Rashkind

Great lesson, as always. I'm pretty new here, so wanted to ask a question. While I understand the concept of the CAGED position, I'm wondering where is the best place to go to learn and reinforce that system? I will look on this site, but any recommendations here.? I aske because, while I understand the concept of an arpeggio, I was trying to rap my head around what you call "the G shape, D shape, etc." and WHY you refer to those arpeggios as those shapes. Sorry, long question. Thank you for any help you can provide.

dave

Slow down the video as slow as you need. Learn a phrase at a time over and over till you can play by memory, then next phrase. Alex is great at not over talking it!

Daniel OConnor

An absolutely class lesson as always. I've needed a systematic approach to the arpeggios for years. You are an amazing teacher (and player). Your choices are always so tasteful and your playing subtle and elegant exactly the kind of player I dream of becoming. From all my years of seaching on youtube I've never been able to get my head around minor keys , nobody was doing it well until you came along. Your Tom Waits minor studies have changed the game for me. Please keep going back to minor keys as you handle them so well. You've changed my guitar playing immeasurably for the better. Thanks so much for your excellent work.

Gert De Groof

An unusual undisguised masterclass. It fuels my appetite for some 9’s and b9’ to be added in a follow up! 👌❤️🙏

Rupert Hawkes

On the lazy j. Is there a reason you use flint as opposed to on onboard trem/reverb

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Rupert, when I first got it in 2013, it was fully loaded with the trem and reverb modules, and although I did enjoy them, after many years of gigging heavily with it, the upkeep and maintenance on all of those extra valves became a real pain, plus the inherent added noise it created in the circuit (and physical extra weight of the amp!), so I took it down to Jesse personally and had him remove the modules for me and have much preferred doing it this way for a few years now.

Alex Farran Guitar

Aw thank you so much Daniel, your kind and enthusiastic words mean the world to me! Well done for putting all of the hard work in to further your own playing my friend! 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Elliot, no plans to do so in this case.. unlike my more planned lead studies, the idea with this is just to show in real time how I would go about practicing these concepts. Let me know the timestamp of a particular lick you dig though and I'll tab it out for you and email it across ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks KD. Yes that's a lesson I've been pondering for years now.. trying to think of a succinct and quantifiable way of teaching that is not easy but I have a few ideas.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you so much Carlos, I massively appreciate your kind words! I'm so glad you enjoy my teaching and the production of my videos. It means a lot to me 🙏🏻

Dave Stephenson

Great, clear little session that explains the little licks that spring into my head during solos. It's a really useful way of structuring my thinking. I really like the inclusion of b3 - 3 and also 6-b7-1, lovely little semitone runs which bring otherwise predictable solos to life, and so many players never seem to use!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Dave, glad you found it useful! The simplicity of approaching a target note from a semi-tone below is just wonderful and I agree that so many more players should be aware of it! Hope you're well mate 🍻

Elliot Swain

Hey Alex, do you have any tips on improving my speed. I just cant seem to get comfortable matching your speed on the g7 arpeggio and thirds section. Are you alternate picking the whole time?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Elliot, apologies for the slow reply, didn't see this comment somehow! Yes, alternate picking is definitely my go-to for that stuff, just work on intentional, slow picking with strong tone on every note, and then very gradually increase your speed. Maybe set a metronome to 60bpm and run through your sub-divisions.. quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets, sixteenths etc

Frederick

Alex so loved the cell approach and Charley Parker lick. Many Thanks

Jon Horbury

im loving the lesson. love your blusey lessons you do. thank you for all you do. do you have the tabs for the piece you play here at all? thank you again

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Jon, thanks for the kind words! No performance tabs for this one as it's intended more as a kind of "practice along with me" or "here's how one should practice".. leaving the student to do the work.

Jon Horbury

Thank you Alex. I have tried to follow and transcribe. More patience needed from me I think 😀

Robert Blagg

Hello Alex. I'm a new subscriber to your Patreon group. I'm jumping around to various lessons just getting the feel for your different collections. Just spent a really enjoyable 45 minutes applying the minor blues scale and A7 arpeggios to a the A7 groove in the different positions. Great lesson sir!!

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s so good to hear Robert! Very glad you’re enjoying the lessons buddy 🙏🏻
