His playing has had a huge influence on me and was one of the big reasons I got into Django Reinhardt and gypsy jazz. I often recommend students of mine to explore Marc’s playing as to me, it is a perfect middle ground of gypsy jazz and blues with some punk attitude and an serious edge! If you’re looking for ways to get out of the pentatonic prison, this is where you need to start. Thanks for watching! Raymond Decanio

This is the video which compelled me to support you on patreon. I absolutely love the gypsy blues on the tele. The tone the use of manouche lines is brilliant!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you so much Raymond! I really appreciate your support and kind words 🙏🏻 Glad you enjoyed this one.. I just filmed another lesson on this style funnily enough, where we dial these flavours up to ten so I’m hoping you’ll like that one too. 🙏🏻

Carl McAndrew

Thanks for the extra study materials Alex - very much appreciated!

Anthony Calcaterra

Love this, any particular suggestions on what tunes to listen to?

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Anthony. For Tom Waits tunes with maximum Ribot-ness, the live “Big Time” album is fantastic, stand out tunes would be “16 shells”, “way down in the hole”, “shore leave”, “telephone call from Istanbul”, “rain dogs”,”strange weather”, “clap hands”. As for studio albums, there’s so much to go at, but definitely check out these tracks; “jockey full of bourbon”, “Singapore”, “clap hands”, “cold water”, “black market baby”, “hoist that rag”, “green grass”, “make it rain”. For another side of his playing, check “house where nobody lives”.. (some of THE best soul blues guitar playing under a vocal) and “hold on”.. some of the most heart breakingly beautiful stuff you’ll hear.. amazing ambient-Americana style. One of my favourite bits of Ribot-magic is his playing on Joe Henry’s “over her shoulder”.

Michael Sosebee

For me this was your best lesson yet! I studied your licks (tasty) and practiced the arpeggios and then I played over the backing track for almost two hours until I could clearly hear the changes. Thanks Again.

Alex Farran Guitar

Oh man, that’s so good to hear! Thanks for the comment Michael! 🙏🏻🍻

Gert De Groof

Really, this one is of the charts for me. If I master everything in this video, I could die a happy man! I’ll be coming back to this one at least once a week. I had the privilege to meet Ribot last summer, we did a radio broadcasting and recording of his Ceramic dog trio. Such a great player. And so are you Alex! Thank you so much, for going in such dept in Ribot’s playing.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you for the kind words Gert!.. I'm honestly so glad you enjoyed the lesson so much! Wow, that's so cool you met him and worked with him! Is there a video of that session available online?

Gert De Groof

Unfortunately no video recording was made, there might be an on demand audio recording available through VRT max. I’ll have to look into that. Recording was made in the Hnita Hoeve in Belgium on July 3.

Tim Mulry

Circling back through the archive. This a great lesson to work through, esp. with your arpeggios cheat sheet. FYI as of right now, the backing track is not in the .zip archive.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Tim, I appreciate the kind words.. and the hint about the backing track. I uploaded it as a separate file under the post above, but good point, I should add it to the Zip file too. Will get that done tomorrow 🍻

Gert De Groof

Tone question on this one. I assume you were using a strymon flint? How do you set that up for this tone?

Carlos Funk

The additional materials in this are just unbelievably complete.... Yes, work on those appegios all over the neck, please keep hammering on that, Alex....yes, it's gonna take some time, yes I know....but so worth it...thanks so much for your teaching ! !

Carlos Funk

by the way, comments by Choca Blues on youtube is me as well, the google accounts get mixed up and I don't know who I am half the time.

Seth

anyone else's computer saying it can't open the file because there is no application to open it?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Seth, if you’re talking about the .gp files, then you need Guitar Pro software to open those. Otherwise, just use the .PDF files 👍🏻

Seth

I have guitar pro and use it every day. So far this is the only one it won't open for some reason.

Alex Farran Guitar

Very peculiar! I’ll email the file to you directly .. hopefully that helps 👍🏻

Esgi...sg

Hi Alex, I hope all is going great! I noticed that you are including an audio track of your run through on some of the newer posts, could you drop your run through of this one in the zip? Thanks again for all of the great lessons, I really connect with your teaching style and I'm very thankful for you, cheers!

Rupert Hawkes

Amazing! I’ve started on Billies Bounce but this is another I’m going to start. The mix of gypsy and blues / Cuban is so deicious. One thing Alex, the zip is only 9kb and does extract for me. I hope it includes the drum part backing but don’t know until I can extract (oh and how to play the rhythm part too). Thanks as always

Ian Quittner

Me too.. the link from patreon produces a file that says the zip is damaged. The link from the email doesn't work at all.

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s so strange. I’ll upload the zip file again now. Give it 10 minutes before trying again and let me know if it works?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Rupert, the zip should be fixed now. I believe the issue was that it was too large in size, so I've removed the longer backing track and included it as a separate downloadable file below the zip.

Philip

I am unable to access the attachment. Clicking on the link in your email or through your Patreon site lead to a "not found" message.

Tom

This can’t be a coincidence! I’m playing it right now, and here comes the email with the update. I spent the holidays working on the previous solo lesson using a triad approach, and this piece fits perfectly—same chords, same style. I’m excited to expand the solo with what I’ve learned. Thank you!

Rupert Hawkes

That’s got it, thanks a million! That Eastman is arriving tomorrow, I had to do it!

Philip

Thanks! Problem fixed.

Michael Friedman

I like that you included the "random melodic minor noodling" - that is something I'm trying to wrap my ears/fingers around right now

Alex Farran Guitar

Glad you found that useful! I’ll be doing the first in a series of melodic minor lessons very soon too 👍🏻

Peter Kelly

Thanks for this surprise gift Alex. I remember working through your original materials for this video, which was just the lead study pdf and gpx files? I've had a couple of weeks away from guitar playing over the Christmas/New year break so I'll study this stuff again. I like the way you explain how the 7b9 chord becomes the diminished chord built on the 3rd.

Peter Kelly

looking forward to some more melodic minor lessons.

John Olenski

Great start to the New Year! I deeply appreciate your teaching style which has opened up a whole new exploration of playing.

Roger Atkins

Hi Alex. I’m new to your site and didn’t know where to dip in so started with the Marc Ribot style open chords and moved on to this great lesson. Love the dissonance- reminiscent of Dave Rawlings. Thanks for all the extra resources which will keep me going for a good while. You’ve introduced me to a new style of playing which is challenging but so worthwhile and I’m looking forward to delving deeper.

Alex Farran Guitar

That's so good to hear Roger, thanks for the comment! Ah yes, I love Dave Rawlings! Will be doing a video on him very soon!

Benny A

I circled back round to this lesson and am loving it. I spent days just running the arpeggios all across the fretboard which is actually pretty fun. I absolutely loving playing the section with the double stop 6ths leading into the run up the scale. It’s fun to really attack that run. I can get a good Ribot sound from my fender GTX amp too. I still struggle with something that seems simple - a double stop third then hammering on the lower string. My hammering ring finger always mutes the higher string below it. I try to use my pinky instead.

Alex Farran Guitar

Glad you’re enjoying the lesson so much Benny, that’s awesome! Ah yes, a common sticking area that.. just stay patient and really work on hooking the fingers over in an agile way, drop the thumb down a bit lower and extend the forearm. 👍🏻

dinshaw gobhai

Great stuff, thank you Alex! Any suggestions for how to practice the arpeggios (sorry if this is discussed elsewhere)? Maybe it’s better to get major arpeggios everywhere, then start drilling 6 and 9? Or whatever advice you have would be appreciated.
