As I'm sure most of you know, George Barnes is one of my favourite guitar players and there's so many amazing recordings of his to dig into.. whether playing alone, fronting a band, or as a sideman. But I'm recommending that you go and track down this particular record. I picked it up on vinyl way back but it's also available on streaming services and YouTube.

Way back in the early days of my YouTube channel, before I took a 10 year hiatus, I did do a video covering the song linked above. I plan to type my transcription up nice and neat any day now, would anyone be interested in that?

Anyway, here's my video of "Starlight Interlude".. a crazy, mind behind study on the diminished tonality!..

And finally, you HAVE to check out his arrangement of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" off the album above.. check out those slick key changes!!.. (also currently transcribing this one for a future lesson!)..

A big “yes” to all of these, and any future George Barnes - especially from his Country Jazz album. Thanks!

Nice! I did a video of "Old Kentucky Ramble" off that very album.. which I do intend on doing a full lesson for at some point. I will upload my transcription for both my chords and lead part on here over the next few days too. In the meantime, here's the video.. https://youtu.be/gFo9rOl0TPI?si=UTead9qbFFT0E79T

Is there a transcription to Starlight Interlude?

You know, for most of my life I've never thought much about this type of music. I liked it, but never realized the amount of detail and artistry these guitarists have. Until you started pointing it out I had no idea. I think a lot of people are like me, they've mostly forgotten about these musicians. I"m really enjoying these lessons. There's so much to learn and it's helping my fretboard knowledge tremendously. And yes, I'm totally up for any transcriptions you want to do. I tend to like slower tunes better, but mostly because that's a bit easier for me to play. Thanks, Alex.

Thanks for the comment Randy, glad you’re enjoying these posts and finding new artistry in old recordings. Absolute masters these guys! 🙏🏻

I'd love a transcription too! Thanks Alex.

Thanks for the links, am still playing catch-up with all your content but very glad to see this…

Alex Farran Guitar

My pleasure Jonathan!.. no rush, just tackle what you fancy, whenever you fancy 👌🏻

Yeah it's just unbelievable, it is a personal goal of mine to transcribe the full album at some point. It just keeps on getting better the more i pick up and learn form it.

Would love a transcription of Starlight Interlude. That piece of music just blew my mind. Thanks

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Jerome, it is amazing! I've almost got it typed out.. just trying to figure out a neat way to present the timing for the intro part as well as get the changes fully figured out. Leave it with me and it'll be done by next week ;)

How's that transcription of Starlight Interlude going? There should be a saying along the lines of "Not matter how much you give, you can be sure people will be for asking for more";)
