Lots of bends, double stops and steel guitar voicings, delivered with the searing twang of a vintage tele bridge pickup through a Fender black-panel amplifier. I'd say this falls somewhere in the intermediate to advanced category and should hopefully give you plenty to get your teeth into! And as always, stick around til the end for gear talk and recommended listening 👌🏻 ⏱️TIMESTAMPS⏱️ 00:00 - Performance 01:15 - Mission brief 01:54 - Learning the changes Solo#1 breakdown; 03:01 - Intro 04:56 - A section 07:00 - Stock country motifs & phrasing 08:20 - Descending sixths on a dominant chord 10:38 - Bluegrass vocabulary Solo #2 breakdown; 12:21 - Rockabilly/Charlie Christian ideas 14:26 - B7 chordal idea 14:53 - Danny Gatton pedal steel textures 16:51 - Reoccurring chromatic idea! 17:26 - Jimmie Rivers idea 17:51 - Essential country ending! 18:41 - Philosophy 19:31 - Tone Talk! 20:07 - Recommended listening! 20:53 - Sign-off! Love it Alex, lots to get stuck into there

Paul Scafidi

I really love this flavor of playing. You’ve presented a lot to unpack in the most accessible way. I have an analytical mind and an instinctive ear, thus your approach is very helpful, a glue that binds the two. It contributes inspiration to stay dedicated to the woodshed. I’m currently obsessively dedicated to Richard Saslow’s “The New Art of Ragtime Guitar.” Man it’s challenging, especially for a 62 year old beginner/intermediate player. I believe though that there is much from which to benefit in that pursuit. Plus it’s sick how much engagement and fun I derive laboring for hours over the nuances of pitch, tone, damping and rhythm one bar a time. I look forward to working with this solo. Thanks.

More tempted now to pull the trigger for a tele, but for now I’m still a tele wannabe ha ha

David Lemon

Excited to dive into this one - thanks, Alex!

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha your time will come Mark.. the right tele is out there somewhere with your name on it 👌🏻😉

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Paul, I’m so glad these lessons resonate with you. I love that you’re constantly challenging yourself and striving for progress!.. it’s the only way in my opinion. Stay inspired! 👌🏻

James Gaudette

Great lesson! Now you’re talking my music language! Love how you added the Jimmie’s Blues lick in there🎵🎸

Alex is the Tone King new? I think Andy of Jazz Guitar with Andy just got one as well. What are your thoughts on that amp?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Patrick, indeed, I picked the Imperial Mk2 up a few weeks ago. It's a fantastic amp with a lovely tone, but I doubt I'll keep hold of it for long. I was hoping it would sound basically like my 69' Deluxe Reverb, but it's a little too bright and hi-fi for my tastes and the reverb is kind of pathetic compared to the old Fender. Also, the lead channel is touted as a "Tweed deluxe" type of circuit, but lacks a lot of the full bodied grunt of that fabled 5e3 circuit. The build quality and general feel of the amp is excellent, with a fantastic in-built attenuator. But to be frank, it can't hold a candle to my vintage Fenders.. it lacks some character I guess. The search continues!.. but in the meantime I shall continue to gig my vintage amps!

Patrick McKinney

That's interesting to me. I know there are a lot of great newer amps, but I sure know a lot of players who make the same conclusion that the vintage Fenders are in a league of their own. I'm an Among player. I have several and really like the darker tone. I usually gig with a mid 60's Reverberocket, and my primary recording amps are either a Gemini (can't remember which model it is) or my favorite R-15-R which is much like the Reverberocket but slightly more powerful and with a 15 inch speaker. For some reason other than the portaflexes, Ampeg amps remains much more affordable than other vintage gear. You might want to give them a try. Most of mine have needed speaker replacement and have been outfitted with Webers.

David

I can't waite to get to this one, awesome

David

I am still working on Louisiana fairytale, about 3/4 memorized at the moment, then I gotta work on the timing , it’s coming along though, I might even post it if it’s not to bad but never done that before either lol so will see😀 cheers, Happy new year

Craig Henry

I notice you said you added an attenuator to it. Doesn’t tone kings all have them built in.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Craig, it does have one built in but I didn’t use it as I was recording it through the Universal Audio Ox Box which has a built in attenuator 👍🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Hey Michael, make sure to open the post fully rather than just viewing the “preview”. You’ll then see a downloadable zip file underneath the post with all accompanying lesson materials in 👍🏻
