One of the albums I grew up on, this is full of great songwriting, musicianship and beautifully crisp and raw production. To this day I still often use the acoustic guitar sounds on this record as a reference when tracking and mixing acoustic parts.

Terry, also know as "Superlungs" for his incredible vocal abilities is often known for having turned down the Led Zeppelin job (he was first choice as lead singer before Robert Plant). People who frame this as some kind of mistake on Terry's part really don't get it and have clearly never bothered to explore his solo work.

The song linked above the post is of course the title track, but also check out "Brave Awakening", a beautiful wilting country-tinged piece of English storytelling, "The bairns don't have get-togethers round here, not anymore".. (I recommend reading the lyrics along with it);

Also check out "To Be Treated Right";

I'd originally intended for these "album of the week" posts to be guitar centric but as someone who has always drawn inspiration mainly from great songwriters as opposed to virtuoso players, I think I'm gonna need to be including more albums of this sort, and *gasp* perhaps even albums that contain no guitar at all! 😬😆

Hope you guys enjoy this record! 🙏🏻

This is really good. I've never heard this before. I wonder if the States didn't take a UK country singer seriously. We probably just didn't pay attention. It's very Gram Parsons but a little more raw. EDIT: I just read on Wikipedia the story about him almost joining The New Yardbirds. It reminded me of one of my favorite videos on YouTube because it's kind of jarring how lacking in charisma and range their last singer was. The Yardbirds - Dazed and Confused. https://youtu.be/uHWQtRjGHgo It looks like we can't link here though. Bummer. It's a strange video and Jimmy Page do his typical thing on a classic song with a weak vocalist. Cognitive dissonance.

Totally agree Alex. Just had a look at the last three albums I played, Bill Evans live at the Village Vanguard, Anton Bruckner Symphony 9 and Eroll Garner, Solitaire-not a guitar to be found, but I’m going to be playing my guitar today for sure. Sometimes I don’t want to hear guitar music specifically but rather hear some other stuff “a little respite” from the familiar maybe? 🤔

Some great albums in there.. was gonna feature that Bill Evans one for some point too! 👌🏻😉

Alex Farran Guitar

Yeah absolutely buddy! Funny to see Page without Plant belting it out at his side! 😵

A new artist to me, but I can easily imagine another part of the metaverse in which I am listening to his albums in the 60's early 70's (high as a kite) and am really feeling his music and lyrics. Defintely more interesting than Donovan or Cat Stevens, who were the two folksingers from Britian who dominated the AM airwaves at that time. He has a beautiful and very personal tone and touch in his voice and songwriting.

Thoroughly enjoying this. Thanks for sharing!

Gert De Groof

Great singer! Knew and liked the ‘River’ album, never really checked out his other albums…shame on me! Thanks for adding this one, not on Apple Music unfortunately.

Jeffrey Cole

First heard him on The Devils Rejects soundtrack and instantly became a fan. Great recommendation.

Alex Farran Guitar

Oh man, that’s a great film with a great soundtrack too! 👌🏻

I DO believe David Lindley is featured on this album. I saw Reid open for Lindley in concert at a small club (McCabe's) in LA.

Alex Farran Guitar

Oh wow, I bet that was amazing! Didn't realise he was on this record!

I am only a recent member... but came across this post. I am 69 and remember listening to Terry Reid back in 69. Very sad to have heard of his passing.
