While Melissa poses and I shoot, the photographs from White Tension start appearing one after another on the monitor beside the set. For the first time, a Cinematic Tuesday lets you watch this part of the process so closely: the image has literally just been created, the shoot is still happening, and we simply keep working.
Melissa is wearing an extremely minimal outfit, so from the very first frames it is pretty obvious that White Tension is not exactly a quiet fashion shoot. And the funny thing is how completely normal everything feels while we work: I shoot, she occasionally checks the monitor, adjusts something and goes straight back to the set. Everything happens with absolute calm, while the photographs appearing on screen suggest a very different kind of atmosphere.
I cut very little from this video, so the pauses, movements and quieter moments are still there. Watching it back, I noticed something I had barely realized while we were shooting: Melissa and I hardly talk at all.
A few directions, the occasional joke, and then we simply keep shooting.
I’ll tell you why on the other side of the post. 😏

Buongiorno miei carissimi FANATICs!
Io so come lavora lei, lei sa come lavoro io, quindi per lunghi momenti semplicemente… lavoriamo.

Good morning my dear FANATICs!
I really like this backstage video because, watching it back, I realized that it probably explains the way Melissa and I work together better than I ever could in words.
The first new element is obvious almost immediately: tethering. This time my camera was connected directly to the computer, so every photograph appeared on the monitor just a few seconds after I took it. It worked extremely well with Melissa, especially because she really enjoyed being able to check herself almost in real time. Every now and then she would walk over to the screen, look at what we had just created, return to the set, adjust a pose or change some small detail, and we would continue.
And you can actually follow that process very clearly in the video. You are not only watching me photograph Melissa while she poses: you can also see the photograph appearing on the screen while we are still working on the set.
The second thing almost made me laugh when I watched the footage back: Melissa and I are practically silent. 😄
This was our fourth shoot together and, photographically speaking, we have known each other forever by now. I do not need to constantly give her directions, and she does not need me to explain every single step. I know how she works, she knows how I work, so for long stretches we simply… work.
With a model on her first shoot it is naturally very different: I talk much more, explain things, make corrections and guide the posing more closely. With Melissa there is now such a strong professional familiarity that many things happen almost automatically.
That is also why I decided to cut very little. I kept the pauses, the movements around the studio and even the moments when nothing particularly spectacular seems to be happening. At times it genuinely feels like a small photographic Big Brother: you are simply there watching us, Melissa moving around the set, me shooting, the monitor updating, and White Tension gradually taking shape in front of you.
So this time I am especially curious about the tethering: do you enjoy being able to see the photographs appear on the monitor while we are still shooting? I think it adds a completely new point of view to the backstage experience, and it could become something worth exploring again in future Cinematic Tuesdays. 🎥
