I checked this show out and it wasn’t for me. I watched like half the season and it wasn’t very not for me. If someone else liked it, it’s up to them. But I still hate magical girl series. Never liked them lol

Yeah, I watched Gushing Over Magical Girls purely out of curiosity, and I had a blast the entire season. It is so messed up, but it's really funny. I'm not a huge magical girls fan, but I know enough about the genre that all the jokes landed.

Having watched the entire season for reasons that even I do not understand... It's certainly something. It detaches itself from the classic magical girl styles and relies on things that you wouldn't see in a more mainstream anime, and strangely manages not to fall into too much vulgarity. Fan-service? Sure. Sexual themes? Yes, they're omni-present, but not as comedic devices, rather as integral parts of the plot. The story is actually quite interesting in and of itself, and if you can blur the most explicit parts from your mind, you can enjoy it just like any other anime.

Yeah, this has to be a Patreon-ONLY react. The thing is, it's actually a fun satire of traditional magical girl tropes. Dark sus anti-magical girl, while still having fun with the core conceit. If you're willing to go dark and sus, there are a fair few ecchi anime that are right on the line of hentai but still have interesting characters and stories.

Who chose these clips, aside from the last one the choices were complete ass. That said, Luke please just watch the show. Its a super short show and watching it through clips is much less interesting. The manga for this is in my top five manga.

Honestly this anime has some of the best voice acting for people who never voice acted for a big anime. Also while it's definitely not for kids the plot is really good and surprisingly the manga is actually tamer then the anime.

Honestly yes madoka magica is not the right one to start out with as far as magical girl animes go but even so as far as the best ones i have seen i would highly recommend series such has Nanoha series even the side series vivid strike which is magical girl UFC fighting, Tsubasa Chronicals which is the story of how the world of Card Captor Sakura came to be, spec ops asuka which is magical girls military special forces even though sadly they never animated the whole series-* and finally this series you are watching moments of. To me personally are the best ones out that have an anime at least.

As a Madoka Magica super fan, my insides wanted to scream that you didn't like it. But it's all good, we're all allowed to have our own opinions. So if it's not for you, I can live with that. Gushing Over Magical Girls is really funny, but it's also VERY SUS. There is nudity, and a lot of references to sexual assault. Because of this, there's a good layer of controversy around it, as some anime sites won't even list it, and some places label it CP. Personally, I like the comedy and the character designs, and I just skip the sexual stuff. So I think this is something you should keep in mind if you're thinking about watching it. I'd honestly say this anime might be a bit too advanced for you.

The sus is so ingrained in this show that without it you can't understand what's going on... the first clip had so much cut out of it that even having watched the show you had a hard time following what was happening

Fun show, but a cultured choice. It's a show about magical girls a twist, so it expects the watcher to have a minimun knowledge of how those shows work. And the echi is dialed up to 11, so it turns off a lot of people because how sus it is. While I like the show and think it's hilarious, in no way would I recomend it as the first choice if I was trying to sell the magical girl genre to someone else.

They just came out with a "Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show", I don't know how it is, but it sounds promising lol. And yeah, the clips in this show were fairly tame for everything that happens in the show. it ran uncensored btw.

I mean anyone who sees this show as seriously problematic just has issues to differentiate fiction from reality. And when it comes to Luke I don't remember him ever being particularly hung up on this sort of stuff (though admittedly I don't watch all of his reactions and much less his streams). Maybe he made a few comments that he dislikes loli/shota stuff or finds it weird, which is okay Imo because it's not for everyone.

Ok, hear me our Luke. There are some magical girls animes, that are "different" and most of that ones are pure comedy. I would suggest, you try to look for Magical Witch Punie-chan (Dai Mahou Touge), its like nothing you have seen before. Its from 2006 and it has just 8 episodes.

Yes, just as you said, GOMG is like the Konosuba of Magical Girls, as Konosuba is a satire on the Isekai genre (a genre with a lot of variety in it). Well, truth be told, the "magical girl" genre is very varied as well. I'm not one a big fan of the generic examples of the genre, but that's why I laugh at the satires (like Gushing Over Magical Girls) and I enjoy the more dark ones (like Madoka). So I wouldn't say that just because you didn't click with the dark side of the genre after watching one show, that means you can't find enjoyment on other sides of the same genre. Maybe you're one of the people that enjoy actual Magical Girls doing Magical Girls things like Sakura Card Captor, Pretty Cure or Sailor Moon, who knows? But for the moment, seems like comedy variants are the way to go. In that regard, GOMG is definitely a good series, but I'm not sure if it would be the best starting point, as it often makes fun of tropes that are common in the genre. If you're not at least a little familiar with those tropes, you may get a little lost.
