Skipping the canon OVA and especially Season 4 Episode 0 when basically every comment on the last few videos was saying it is a must watch is pretty disappointing

Luke boldly stating that the animation was okay... Not knowing that AT LEAST 50% of the overall animation budget for the season has just been consumed just to make the first episode pop. Let's see how that first impression holds up as we continue forward. :) Maybe Luke won't mind the panning shots of still images with character voiceovers. Or maybe Luke enjoy's powerpoint slideshows where the only thing animated are the mouth movements. Also, please keep in mind that we need to reserve at least 25% of the overall animation budget on the ending episode. Bon Appétit, Luke!

Copyright for Yona of the Dawn? Really? It's hard to imagine. It's such an old anime. But I guess it's up to the copyright holder. Maybe they are stricter then others. Your list is all old gold, but I think it's time for Monogatari imho.

Saying that the fights are shit because there are no stakes/characters aren't dying is a really weird take. DxD fights do what their supposed to, which is to test issei's power or be an emotional climax in that arc. This take might also be you watching through meta glasses which a lot of people do thinking that characters can't die because the show is a harem/comedy

Hey hopefully you see this, but you really need to check out episode 0, it’s not just an OVA, it’s going to recontextualize and help you understand what will be a bit of a confusing season. I’m not sure if you were planning to watch all the OVAs after the anime, some are like four five minute shorts, others are 20 minute episodes, (You should watch them if you’re considering it, they’re fun!) but episode 0 should be watched before continuing with season 4 if possible. It’s generally listed as episode one on some streaming services too. Basically, the ending of season 3 was completely anime original, while the second half was very different from the light novels, the author changed studios, and episode 0 starts from the Juggernaut Drive how it was supposed to be. Season 4 continues from Issei’s Juggernaut Drive, everything that happened with Rias was not canon. To explain another confusing plot element that’ll come up, season three skipped a Rating Game Rias had with Sona. It’ll be mentioned very briefly, but I’m just saying it so you’re not wondering when it happened when it’s brought up. I hope you enjoy Hero! It’s got some of the best direction since season 2.

It’s also worth mentioning fights are mostly done to settle political disputes, that’s literally what Rating Games are. The intention isn’t always death so much as it’s another goal or a show of power. Characters do die of course, like Valper, Kokabiel, Leviathan, Diodora, but there is definitely a lack of threat for our characters. Then again just killing off like fucking Koneko or Akeno randomly would be pretty dark.

Yeah, the 1st episode was hit on the Extra channel > Luke watched it during Shoujo/Josei sample stream and the whole anime part is cut out as for Monogatari, I would only push for Bakemonogatari first and then see how it goes...

You have to watch ep 0 because after what happened in that episode in S3 the anime didn't follow what the books did, yes written Novels. So that's why the studio is different because the other one messed up and annoyed the auther. By changing his story

The reason why people didn't like season 4 is the art style, not the animation. The thing is that most people don't know the difference between those terms and they say animation to everything, so I understand why you could get confused. It's funny because whether you like it or not, the new art style is more akin to the source material and the animation is better than the previous seasons. Just to contextualize, they changed the studio because the author got pretty mad with the previous one during season 3 due to the disrespect they had for the source material. They skipped entire arcs, mixed some, rushed others and even the last 3 eps were entirely made up by the studio, not the author, making it 100% not canon. That's why you liked it less than the others, a lot of incoherences and repeated plot points. That's why you need to watch ep 0 of this season, it tells what truly happened during the climax of the kidnapping of Asia arc and they will tell you about the Switch Princess they talked about in this ep. Also, you need to understand that battles don't always necessarily have stakes. Do martial arts tournaments have stakes? No, it's just for fun. In this case is for a tournament in which the champion will be candidate for future Devil King. Yes, there are battles that have them, Loki for example, but not feeling the stakes I think it's because of you having some experience watching anime battles and the studio making Loki less imponent than the source material.

yeah most ppl also dont know that the art style this season is meant to look more like the light novel illustrations so this art is actually way more accurate in terms of the light novel

The Riser OVA from S3 is canon but is ok to watch later on. He is going to miss a lot of important context jumping into S4 without watching episode 0 tho, it’s not an OVA it’s basically episode 1

Static pictures with character voice overs. Shot's where the only feature being animated on screen are the characters mouths. Simplified character and background designs [Regardless of the lazy changes made by the author]. Backgrounds that never move. Recycled shots from other episodes. I think it's safe to say,this is a low quality animation. Season 4 was made on a shoestring budget and it shows. They did what they could, I will say that. But in the end, season 4 was made for the diehards. It's okay to like season 4. But liking it doesn't change the fact that it's a cheaply made animation with overall lower production quality.

I'm not sure that many people develop an emotional bond that's strong enough that they would care about any of the characters in DxD. How many fans of ecchi are drawn to to it for deeply complex plot's and highly detailed character development? Ecchi is about fanservice for many. So it's about the PLOT, not the plot.

Some seem to be turned off of Monogatari because it’s a “long” series. During the last vote I tried to recommend just including ‘Season 1’ in the vote which would include Bakemonogatari, Kizumonogatari, Nisemonogatari, and Nekomonogatari Kuro only and then moving on to Season 2 if he was enjoying it but that fell on deaf ears. Would only be 30 episodes and 3 short films. I think he will really enjoy it tho so if he starts it I imagine he’ll want to watch all of it

And despite all of that it surpassed the animation of the previous studio. You need to watch it again, all the fights were 80% ppt slides. And the budget was put in where it needed to be put, in the figths and the sus. That's all. It's okay to hate season 4 but that doesn't change the fact that they used their budget more intelligently than the previous ones, resulting in a better season animation wise.

Luke disapproves of High School DXD fight because there are no major deaths, but on the same day he states that The Eminence in the Shadows is his favorite anime even though it's impossible for Cid/Shadow or the other Seven Garden girls to die. OK, Luke... OK. XD

I don't get @Slipstream's point. the level of animation is at least the same if not BETTER than the last 3 seasons. Heck, this season went way above animation if we're comparing the previous seasons. are we confusing the negative view of the new art style with the animation cuz in no damn way S4 was made for diehards cuz "low quality" and art style was closer to source material. Studio Passione absolutely blows what TNK did in terms of animation lol

Smart use of budget is always great! It's amazing what they can do with 1000 yen per episode budget these days... It's "low quality" because it was made on a smaller budget then the prior seasons. By the time they where making season 4, most people had moved on to better things. So season 4 was basically the author wringing out the last of the toothpaste. The ownership group had a hard time finding bankers willing to beat the horse. The old studio didn't want to work for peanuts. So a budget friendly studio was used insted. You get what you pay for. Also, keep in mind. I'm explaining my opinion. I'm not saying your opinion is wrong. I'm allowing others to evaluate what I'm saying and attempting to provide them date so that others may form objective opinions. I enjojed watching DxD, just not for the same reason as some. For me, it's a fun dumpster fire, not a master opus. I call a spade, a spade. Sorry if you disagree.

First of all, it's hypocritical to criticize season 4 for its static shots and animation issues when the previous seasons were worse. And that's not an opinion, it's a fact. You are focusing a lot on the budget. If they use it well and focus on the scenes where it is necessary, the level of budget is of no importance. It is even more commendable the fact that they surpassed the previous seasons using a lower budget. That means a very high level of money administration. And yeah, it's okay to have your own opinion as well as I am allowed to have mine and, in my opinion, you are just hating season 4 overall for having a different art style (which I can understand) but you are throwing the hate on the animation and that's unfair. I'm not gonna waste more time on this conversation. I recommend you do a quick rundown through the 3 seasons and then watch 4. It's pretty obvious.

ok i guess i'm showing my age (upper 40s) what the hell does SUS mean???? Is that suspicious or suspect??? ?????????? :D But yea agree with everyone the softer art style didnt really do it for me either. not horrible just rather abrupt change in the middle of the series. I do like the sub story that should be coming up.

I simply offer my opinions and assessments. All are welcome to disagree. Let whoever watches be the judge. I have no control over others. If people choose to value my words, then it's because I've earned that trust. Could my assessment be wrong? Sure! I watched this when it aired in 2015 and haven't seen it since. Also, please keep in mind that studios clean up the animation later on for bluray release. So they smoothed out some of the jank afterwards. With that said, I stand by what I've said. 1) It's a low budget anime production. 2) When not an action sequence or a fan service scene, the anime quality is sub-par. Examples include, but are not limited to: Character cell animation layered on top of real world picturs to reduce cost of background art. Single element animation set on a static background. (Only a single thing is moving on screen because more movement=more cost) Limiting the number of cuts per scene. (Cuts are long and drawn out to ease editing and reduce workload on the limited staff. As a result, the camera often lingers in place for long periods of time with characters dialogue and minimal action on screen. Less detailed character designs. (Yes,the author simplified the art style. Worked out great for him, right?) 3) Studio Passione has it's own unique art style. Everything they make has the same overall ascetic. So it's all about if you enjoy Passione art style or not. I personally find Passione to be a bit cartoony and crude. So it's a drastic reduction of overall production quality. Both the animation quality AND the art style declined. I'm glad I didn't mention anything the writing. Lol :) So, please explain my lies to me. What was the false information or fact? Take me to school, please.

Have you actually watched S1-S3? It was slideshow city. Way worse than S4. Even if they had a higher budget they produced a worse product, showing that the new studio is a lot more skilled and able to do much more with less.

Luke you mentioned that Rias was not acting like she usually does (i.e more embarrassed). However this was much closer to how she is in the novels. The anime in S1-3 toned her feelings down a lot compared with the novels.
