I feel like Father Figure could be about Scooter/Scott. They brought her in, were basically her "father figures" in the industry. She's mentioned in a previous album how they used to tell her she was brave when she was under attack/scrutiny, only to use her and eventually become the very opposition in which they spoke of. And she took her power back making her the actual father figure in the story all along, if that makes sense? Like she was actually the one protecting the "family" and their best interests. She was the one helping to cover things up at the end of the day, when it should have been them.

So, the album dropped at 2pm Sydney time. Thats 7 hours ago. I have been streaming it on 3 devices on Youtube, Apple music and Spotify over and over ever since. I THINK I've racked up some quality numbers of streams for Taylor in that time and Im sure many others have as well. Im hoping we blow the records OFF THE CHARTS so to speak. So I'm finally here to watch your reaction, Luke. And I left it until now, 9pm. Coz I just know youre gonna make me cry like a baby , so I'll have a good, happy cry then go to bed. I've already got my favourites - Wi$h li$t, Honey, Opalite, Ophelia, Cancelled, TLOAS...so can't wait to see your reaction to those. AND some of the lyrics of some of the others!!!! I love the line KEEP IT 100 ON THE LANDING. plus, All that time I sat alone in my tower you were just honing your powers. He was working out his way to come meet her, and save her. LOVE IT!

Elizabeth Taylor, Hollywood actress from the 50's & 60's, was married EIGHT TIMES, engaged 10!!!!! She fell in love easily, and hard. sometimes with the wrong men. REMIND YOU OF ANYONE???!!! Taylor sings the line "Hollywood Hates Me, you're only as hot as your last hit baby" coz ET went through the same sort of things Taylor went through - popular, then not, then trolled by the Hollywood elite who said she dated too many times, she was "dumb" she had lost her shine. But looking back now most people will recall Liz fondly, like none of that ever happened.

Ruin The Friendship, it's like a past friendship that they both could've moved on to more, but didn't, then one day she gets the news he's gone and she has regrets, not that it was ever going to be that life love, but she'll never know now and it feels like a missed opportunity. You wouldn't change what's happening in your life now, how happy you are now, but you still wonder and think about what could've been.

WISH LIST - YOU GOT IT!!!!! The dreamy way she sings that chorus where she's come to realise she now wants the marriage, the kids, the driveway with the basketball hoop. All the things she never thought she wanted coz she never had the RIGHT person to share it with. Also, the way she says "We tell the world to leave us the fuck alone and they do" - All through this frenzy of the end of the eras tour and then they disappeared for a little bit coz they were having time away together, then even after the album and engagement announcements, people, paps, have given them space and not hounded them to desperation. like respect. I heard Travis say in one of his podcasts that when they are at home in KC the whole community leaves them be, like doesn't follow them or spy on them, they just respect that this is where they live and they give them space,

Cancelled - could be about a few people, and im positive it includes Blake and Ryan. I was wondering if she'd ever speak up about that whole thing, if she was mad at them for involving her name, but it sounds like, if I'm interpreting this song correctly, that they believed in her and stood up with her when all that Kim and Kanye stuff went down and when Taylor herself was cancelled by the press and so she is now reciprocating when Blake is having the same sort of treatment. Better for Taylor to say it in a song, where she can push the double entendre if she needs to. It's got that Did Something Bad feel and sound to it!

I like the idea that Taylor's reversing expectations throughout the album, calling Opalite (a man-made gemstone) something MORE valuable because she and Travis made their own happiness themselves. That in Eldest Daughter and Father Figure she's reversing the idea of a mentor and 'the responsible one' turning into the person who, after her literal life as a showgirl, has the power to protect Travis (the youngest sibling) and have more power than Scott Borchetta. That being cancelled means that she knows that person's been through a crucible. That the word 'Honey' was a negative condescending term until it wasn't anymore, because of who it was saying the word. All of these switchups are thanks to the hard work Taylor put in learning what a good relationship looks like, learning how to be a good businesswoman, how to weather criticism, how to regret past actions in a way that leads her to exhort her fans to avoid doing the same. What a masterpiece. It's worth noting that her father's name is Scott, too. I am certain that factored into the song Father Figure and many of her thoughts since the sale of her Masters.

I've been saying since Midnights that Taylor said those things about not wanting to be married because that's not what JOE wanted. To a certain extent, it's good to make mutual decisions, to try to want what your partner wanted, but it became clear that Taylor was compromising too much, lying to herself about being okay without getting married. She left the Slammer and overcompensated, hung hopes on the longterm what ifs about Matty, and got badly burned by it. I don't see either of those situations as something Taylor fucked up, by trying to align herself with what her partner wanted, because honestly, an equal partnership relies on each person doing that for the love of the other person! ...but it's a give and take. Both men took too much. Travis does seem a lot like a giver, and it's let Taylor be a provider, in a way. She provides affection, companionship, yes, but also because he doesn't seem to be threatened by her wealth and prominence, she can offer to take care of Travis as she sings about in this album. It's lovely to see! I think we may find in retrospect that Taylor will work wonders for showing what a healthy romantic partnership is meant to look like. She's doing great so far.

I lost a childhood friend last summer to suicide, and that line 'and we'll never know why' just about completely destroyed me. If I could do one thing for all the Swifties reacting to this, without ruining the song for them, I wish I could just cast some sort of numbness spell on some of us, gosh. All my love out to the reactors getting hit with this in the next week! Gosh, gosh. RIP Josh, RIP Ernie. Edit: I've heard a few people talking about how tacky it is to write this song but those people don't realize that she wrote Forever Winter about the same person. It's not some passing fancy for Taylor. This is someone whose life intersected with hers and left multiple marks, marks that she treasures. Also, Luke! Don't feel bad about enjoying the sweet innocence and fun of the front half of the song! That's the entire point! The WHOLE of her friendship with Josh is what made the mark. Not just his depression and death! That sudden loss and flip of the meaning of the song puts you in her shocked position hearing the news.

HONEY - I LOVE IT!!! 10/10 Travis has completely changed the way Taylor feels about all those sort of sweet names that she (and frankly a lot of us women) get condescendingly called far too easily by men (and mean bitches). He's said them to her with the utmost love, respect and affection that she now sees them for what they are. I also love the line about the colour of your eyes...you remember them saying that at the beginning of the new heights podcast???? see, EASTER EGGS!

Regarding Charli, there's a bunch of behind the scenes shittalking that's happened, but for me? All that's necessary to know is that not long after the stabbing death of a bunch of CHILD SWIFTIES, Charli's cover on Variety magazine showed 2 arms, one covered with friendship bracelets and a 13 on the back of the hand... and a *severed* arm wearing brat-colored bead bracelets. Totally outrageous, her team should have stopped it from happening, and in that very article didn't Taylor have nice things to say about the album?? Anyway, drag her, Taylor. If I was one of those moms who lost a kid in that attack I would have gone to jail for that magazine cover. (and I have kids their ages)

Exactly, they don’t realize that Forever Winter is about the same person. She wrote it for him, but he died before she released it, and she sang it at his funeral. It’s so sad, and people will always wonder why or what could they have done differently to prevent them from doing it.

TLOAS - THIS SONG SOUND SUPREME!!!!! the mutual respect for each other just makes their voices meld together so well. The story they are telling us but only those two actually know how it feels makes this song feel as though we're peeking into a private conversation between mentor and protege. And then it brings to an end with that eras call back that is SO EMOTIONAL!!! I can honestly say, after about 7 listens to this album now, This is one of my favorites. It'll only get better and better with each play. I'm SO HAPPY for Taylor, and I'm SO PROUD to be a Swiftie.

CRAZINESS... because I have been thinking "I wish I could ask Taylor to write a song about TJ"... on and off since high school was a best friend, ended up marrying a girl who never appreciated him but told me he always thought of me when hearing the song "lips of an angel" and that I had always been the one who got away and I told him he was the one I had always compared everyone else to. He was finally divorcing her when he had a heart attack... oh how badly I wish I had ruined the friendship and just gone ahead and kissed him!!!!!!!!! Oof, I am so sorry about that. I have someone like that too, but he is still alive. I met him when I was 16 during my first trip to Ireland. I had a big crush on him, but at the time he was more interested in my sister. But he and I stayed close and good friends (as close as you can be in the early 2000s at least when you’re 3,000 miles apart and international communication wasn’t always reliable) and I did tell him how much I liked him, and eventually he realized that he and I were way more compatible than he and my sister. When I went over again at 18, we were inseparable and spent all of our time together, except when our other friends were also involved in what we were doing, he would treat me completely differently, like we were just friends and there wasn’t something more. When I confronted him about it he said that he didn’t want anyone to know that we were together (he was worried about what his friends would say about him dating an American that lived as far away as I did), and I told him that didn’t work for me so he either needed to start treating me like a girlfriend in public or I was walking away. Spoiler alert, I walked away. I was so heartbroken over it I completely erased that whole summer from my memory for almost 15 years. I’d kept in touch a little bit with him over the years, I’d been to Ireland a handful more times but never met up with him again until 2019 and he was married with a son by then too and I was divorced and completely single, and when I finally came face to face with him again all of these feelings came flooding back and I didn’t know why or where they came from, and I eventually had a blurry memory of us laying in the grass, holding each other and kissing, but I didn’t know if it was real or if it was a dream, and when I asked him he said it was real. All of a sudden that whole summer came back to me too, like someone just hit me with a ton of bricks, and my heart broke all over again over that loss, just like it was the first time, and he told me that he loves his wife, and he would never think of leaving her or their son, but that the way he treated me that summer was the biggest regret he had in his life, and he wished that things had turned out differently for us and that we were together. It is what it is now, and I still have feelings for him, and I still feel like he could’ve been my 1, but I’m just happy that he’s living a life where he is happy. We speak every day, and have spoken every day since 2019, his wife is fully aware of me and who I was, and that when I come to Ireland each year he takes a few hours one day to come and spend time with me, I’ve told him to invite her and their son so they she knows I’m not up to anything with her husband, but she always declines, and if she does speak about me, so calls me his American Girlfriend, and not on an antagonistic way, which does make me feel good knowing that she knows I wouldn’t do anything to try to steal him away from her.

I actually get so choked up to think about the good that Would've Could've Should've (and Dear John) have already done (along with Demi's 29); I really would like to think even a small part of this is why Taylor was willing to go on New Heights! The difference between her Travis love songs and the anxiety in so many of the songs for previous 'Kens...' is stark, isn't it? Security is so important! Communication, trust, respect. Hell yes.

I think the ending makes us so emotional b/c we miss the tour. As an American, we’re exhausted and largely joyless. The tour was a source of joy and now we have this album which brought me more joy than almost anything (outside of my kids and husband obviously) in 10 months. Idk what you guys are feeling exactly across the pond, but maybe it’s similar. Hearing the crowd noise and the “goodnight” just brought up these emotions a little unexpectedly. So, Father Figure is about Scott Borchetta and her business relationship with him. The song starts from his perspective and then in the end (I saw a change in you, my dear boy) it switches to hers. She has described him as a sort of father figure to her in the past, but as we now know he was ultimately taking advantage of her success. He wanted her star to "rise" but never wanted her to "reign" over her own musical empire (own her masters). She says "I protect the family" in reference to her masters, and says it six times in the song poignantly signifying those first six albums he sold away. She built this empire, leave it with her.

He was always the first person she showed her music to, and it appears that she had a crush on him but was afraid it would ruin the friendship. She lost contact with him when she left school to pursue her career. He struggled with mental health and addiction and passed away in 2010 of a methadone overdose at only age 21.
