Tinkerdoodle

Once again - you made my damn day!

LadyCamp

All the singing was done live on set too!

m

OMGGG YESSS WICKED FOR GOOD NEXTT!?

Lavenderdazed

IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS YES YES YES

Leigh-Sherri Hays

Yea he really needs to see the other half of the movie lol

BGTitan

For Glinda, she thinks she’s a good person, but she’s also someone who thrives on praise and the opinions of others. Her song Popular, while it may seem vapid and pure bubblegum fluff, reveals a lot about how she views the world. And she’s not actually wrong. Social power is an incredibly valuable resource, and it’s all about who has the most of it. “It’s not about aptitude, it’s the way you’re viewed, so it’s very shrewd to be very very popular”. Glinda is actually my favorite character and I’ll talk more about that in the second movie. One of my favorite comments from Ariana in the commentary is when she describes Glinda as a very clumsy duck who thinks she's a graceful swan.

Leigh-Sherri Hays

Well. If you remember they sang and danced when the wicked witch of the East got a house dropped on her in the Wizard of Oz.

Maks Lesniewski

Glinda not seeing anything wrong with the way she addressed Elphaba at the beginning of the movie is kind of the point the movie is trying to make. It basically mocks people with a saviour complex who, without even asking the opinion of the person in question, assume that just because someone is different than them, they must be miserable and searching for a solution to their "problem". Honestly, while I'm pretty sure this was meant to be a race allegory, it can also be translated to disabled people. While I am personally of the kind that WOULD like to be able-bodied, healthy people are often flabbergasted by the idea that someone would be happy in their own body if it didn't meet their standards of functionality.

Neko

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana ate these roles downnn

Anika

The second movie isn't a sequel. They took one musical and made it into two movies (Acts 1 and 2).

Caralea Laming

The guy playing Fiyero, is not Tom Holland, his name is Jonathan Bailey he’s in Bridgerton on Netflix

Leigh-Sherri Hays

Lol yes... wicked is gonna change everything about your whole life! ❤️❤️

Darsy Smith

I just said OH MY GOD out loud and my kids upstairs thought something was wrong!!

Amy Bedster

please start with the broadway/ west end version of Les miserables. There are anniversary editions on DVD. The movie is good enough but makes some questionable casting choices

Darsy Smith

Look how they massacred my boy Javert :( EDIT: Luke, please do the 10th anniversary concert edition, it's got some LEGENDS on the cast, including Phillip Quast as Javert, Michael Ball as Marius, and Lea Salonga as Eponine!

PumpkinSparks

As far as I know Ariana Grande took singing lessons for the role of Glinda. Like she is a phenomenal singer, but Kristin Chenowith (who originated the musical Glinda and set her vibes) is a trained Musical and Opera singer which absolutely shines through in her performance and defines Glinda. And Ariana understood that Pop and R&B singing (which she absolutely masters) is very different. Especially the operatic bit that Kristin liked to throw in and that every follow up tries to emulate kinda scared her to not be up to par. And in my opinion, Ariana did her own lighter spin on Glinda and she knocks it out of the park!

Amy Bedster

EXACTLY what I was referring to lol. Everyone else does an at least passable job

Amy Bedster

I’d also like to suggest in the heights and also the Spielberg recent west side story

Emily Jewett

I was waiting to see your reaction to the wizard and I. Because the notes are just beautiful!

Amy Bedster

Also welcome to wicked where songs are 15 minutes long

Middle Yak

Les Mis-do broadway version. The movie is horrible. I love that you picked up on the complex emotions Glinda expresses in No One Mourns the Wicked. Most people miss it. Bravo! An interpretation: No, ONE mourns the wicked.

Leigh-Sherri Hays

Elphaba is sung by Cynthia Erivo. Kind of the new Broadway queen.. if Idina is like the first.. she was in the Color Purple on Broadway and the musical movie Harriet.

Cora

A reaction to Moulin Rouge would be so amazing.

harvs 🎀

may i introduce you to the fact that they are canonically in love....

Ms. Chuck Terry

Cynthia is so real. Ariana is so funny. Their voices are insane. That was a fun romp. Thanks.

harvs 🎀

galinda and elphaba, i mean

Clara Hines

I can hardly wait for you to do part 2.

James Lewis-Taylor

You have to check out the The live concert where they performed most of the songs, it is incredible. Wicked: One Wonderful night.

Maks Lesniewski

"I was worried he would turn out to be a douche" don't worry, he did, only in real life.

caroline negrin

They actually planted every single one of those flowers built quite a few of the sets

Leigh-Sherri Hays

Lol.. no.. dancing through life is probably the longest song in the whole thing... not the end 😂😂😭

SolarAurora

elphaba is played by cynthia erivo who is phenomenal, i beg you to check out cynthia and ariana opening the live oscars 2025 together, 3 songs including defying gravity, its on another level

Mary Hatch

The cast of this is amazing. I will admit as a wicked fan, I was skeptical of how Ariana would do as Glinda. (I’m a fan of Ariana too but I was nervous lol) but she really became Galinda. Sometimes a big name like that can struggle blending into the character, but she did an amazing job. There is a cameo in song one short day for wicked fans, Idina Menzel (who voiced else) and Kristin Chenoweth play the wise women during one short day, but they were the original Elphaba and Glinda in the broadway musical. I never got to see them perform it, but I’ve loved the original soundtrack since I first heard it. So it was a very cool moment for the fans. It’s also I believe a tradition for each elphaba to do a slight variation on the riff at the end of defying gravity. Idina’s is iconic, but each elphaba puts their own signature on it. I love that this movie still felt true to the original source, but also there were things they did slightly different so it feels fresh and new even when it’s familiar. My favorite song is in pt 2 and I know you’ll love it!

Leigh-Sherri Hays

Yes.. it was a little because of the hat but mostly because she "helped" her sister have a great night.

Amy Bedster

Jonathan Bailey is the actor that plays Fiyero, hes been in the west end a number of times is in bridgerton and also voices a character in final fantasy 14. hes amazing.

MortalCity

+1, The 10th Anniversary Concert of Les Mis is phenomenal

Amy Bedster

Yessss that one’s the best!!

MortalCity

Cynthia Erivo's voice is something else, on a completely different level. Highly recommend looking on youtube for performances from other things, she's always breathtaking.

Rachel

I legitimately cried through this whole movie when I saw it in theaters.

aleayarae_9794

Someone else may have already said this but the woman who looked familiar to u in the beginning when they arrive to school played the bearded lady in The Greatest Showman Keala Settle

scarlett

loving all these musical reactions so far! make sure you have chicago and hairspray on your list, those are imo the best movie musicals out there!

scarlett

also for les mis, the plot might be easier to follow with the movie since the live recordings are concert versions and not fully staged productions. however, the performances are definitely much better on those concert recordings (the 10th anniversary one probably is the best overall). let's just say there were some interesting casting choices made for the film... les mis is fully sung-through so it's not like the concerts are missing anything from the story, but i know some people find it hard to follow the plot with just the lyrics. do whatever you feel works better for you!

m

Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth are the two ladies who made a cameo singing the song about the Wizard. They played the original glinda and elphaba on Broadway you might’ve recognized Idina’s voice. Also, yes, these are all their vocals. Cynthia Erivo is a beast even more so live and Ariana is amazing!! While this movie I think has more of the more well-known songs the vocals in the second movie I think are top tier! Honestly, both are just so amazing

fry

yes please!!!

Anika

I don't know if you caught the homage to Broadway Wicked. But the two women singing on stage in the Emerald City were the ones that played Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway. The one with the brown hair is Idina Menzel. She was also Elsa in Frozen.

Sakura Minamino

It is unfortunate that Glinda's complaint about history is what many people think of when it comes to civil rights. If a black person complains about systemic racism, people will say that, "oh slavery, segregation, and all that is in the past, why are you harping on it so much today" when that history is what led to current issues in minority communities from decisions made then. And then because it is an ugly past, they try to hide it from history book or talking about it. Sadly, very relevant today.

fry

you should totally go see the stage version of wicked!! the movie is a great stage to film adaptation and didn’t take anything away from the stage production but instead added more especially in the 2nd film which i can’t wait to see you watch. The first film did win awards and i believe won an oscar for best costume design which was well deserved. I love that you are reacting to musicals and I’m so very excited for wicked for good next week and dreamgirls

Jennifer Bell

Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith were the magical wise ones and they played Elphaba and Glinda respectively in the orIginal Wicked broadway production

Zari

No, there’s not a pro shot for Wicked. 😭 That’s why everyone was foaming at the mouth when the movie finally happened (myself included). 😂😂

Zari

I saw Wicked with a touring cast when I was about 13 and since that day “I’m Not That Girl” has been my audition song for every musical I’ve ever done since. I have always really connected with Elphaba as a character, but seeing her played by a Black woman really took it to another level for me. I cried so hard the first time I saw this in theaters my shirt was soaked. Cynthia Erivo is truly one-of-a-kind.

Tiffany

love that you picked up Glinda's face in the first song and how she didn't seem all that happy. A lot of first time reactors miss that.

Miranda Cook

You definitely need to go right into Wicked: For Good asap. From a musical perspective this is only the ending of the first act and you only get a brief intermission before going right into Act 2. The feelings of 2 build on what happened here. The timeline catches up to the the events of The Wizard of Oz and if you thought this movie changed your perspective, the second will have you rethinking your feelings on all the characters from the original.

Dréa

I love how you picked up on Elphaba's younger sounding tone. Cynthia Erivo made comments in interviews that it was purposeful in that she wanted to really emphasize the journey of the character through her singing. She starts off younger, breathy in some parts and more innocently toned and that changes as the movie goes on and as the character changes. I'm paraphrasing, but you get it. Cynthia is such a talented vocalist and hearing her speak about musicality and music choices is so enlightening for any music lover, singer, etc.

Bubbles

I was so nervously happy when this movie dropped because this musical has always been one of my favorites. I was worried at first because sometimes musical movies don't hit as hard as the original, but these two movies knocked it out of the park for me and stays pretty faithful to the play. Also, that little easter egg with bringing on Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth (the original Broadway musical Elphaba and Glinda) was so so cool and just the production, direction and casting for these movies have made me so so happy as a fan! XD

Sakura Minamino

I'm kind of not a fan of Nessa just because throughout the movie, you never once see her stand up for her sister. Not to her father. Not to the students who talk about her at school or even at the dance. She has a good relationship with Elphaba but its hard for me to like her as much as everyone else seems to. Also fun fact, in the original Wizard of Oz book, the ruby slippers were actually silver. They changed it to red for the 1930s movie to make the color pop since movies going to color was such a big deal then. BTW, what color are Nessa's shoes from her dad?

Emma Floyd

The irony I find in how everyone sings in this is the one character who doesn’t have a super noticeable singing moment is that headmistress you recognized in the beginning but couldn’t name. She’s Keala Settle- aka The Bearded Lady in The Greatest Showman.

Hridayinee

Aaaah I'm so excited to watch my favorite movie with you!!!!

aleayarae_9794

I'm just curious, which sound is your favorite? For Good?

Mary Hatch

Yep! Haha. When the instrumental to it played during part one and he was like “I love this music it’s so pretty” I was like oh boy just wait. That song is like a knife right to the heart in the best way!

Ashleigh

If you ever get the chance to see the wicked theatre show I cannot recommend enough! I’ve seen it multiple times here in Australia and was lucky enough to see it on broadway when I was in New York and it’s brilliant every single time! Would be a great date night for you and your wife ☺️

Jamie

I can’t wait for you to finally realise that it’s Idina… aka ELSAAAAAA

Sakura Minamino

Hope you react to In the Heights at some point to.

Amy Bedster

as soon as John Chu was announced as producer we knew it was going to be amazing. He made the in the heights movie which was just BEAUTIFUL. we knew it was in safe hands

Yogesh Mehta

The word that the wizard "read" from the Grimmerie is "Omaha", as in the largest/most famous city in Nebraska (a U.S. state) and where he's from

Talia Adams

Yes, I was going to say this!!! It is 100% intentional because she definitely does not have a young tone in other performances she does! The talent!!

Caroline Vitanza

Oh Luke I'm so thrilled for you and for your journey through this. This musical is so integral to who I am. I have seen in once on Broadway and twice touring in Dallas and each time I see it I have these uncontrollable emotional reactions to the performances. The music is some of the best. And I was terrified when I heard they were making it into films but....they could not have nailed it more. I have mixed feelings about part 2, but part 1 is certainly a masterpiece. To answer your question: yes, this story is exactly the same as the stage version, save a couple minor details (for instance, elphaba was always a student at Shiz, she didn't just get recruited by morrible). This film serves as Act 1 of the show while the second film is Act 2. So basically we just had a years long intermission between the two 😅 Cynthia Erivo has one of my favorite voices ever. She absolutely embodies this character. Ariana I had been skeptical about, but she was truly made to play Glinda. Her delivery of every single line and every glance or movement is so perfect to who Glinda is. And yes, this story is a sad one. It's bittersweet and there's a lot of heartbreak. I've never made it through watching it, the films or the stage show, without sobbing. But I promise that by the end, you will be changed For Good 🫶🏼

Emma Floyd

I felt the same way about the shows, it’s been so integral to me that I’ve debated getting defying gravity tattooed on me at multiple points in my life. I was skeptical of Ari too at first, I didn’t doubt her acting for the part since I grew up watching her on Victorious and Cat is a lot like Glinda, but I was worried about her dictation. I had listened to some of her music over the years and knew she could hit the notes but when she would do it in her own music I had a hard time understanding what she was saying. I was so relieved that she seemed to have worked on it in time for the movie.

Hridayinee

I cannot hear the wizard and I from Cynthia Erivo and not cry at the wonder of her voice! Perfection!! So happy you've discovered her

Deanna Gast

I was so excited to get this notification! I knew you'd love this movie and it's always a blast to see how openly and honestly you appreciate good music. Side note: in the first classroom scene, they discuss the moment people started turning against the animals, after the great Drought. What was madam Morrible's specialty? I never read the book, but I've always suspected that's how she proved herself to the wizard.

Calidreamboy

Time to start your deep dive into the queen herself, Ms Ariana Grande, I need you to start this journey king

Cassie Jean

Yes Keala Settle (Ms Coddle from Shiz) was the bearded lady in the greatest showman as well.

aurora

Im so impress because you are the first reactor i have seen that gets this movie totally how it needs to be understood and also glinda as a characters, because she is so complex and you literally just discribe her the perfect way. Also i think you definitely need to go into the ariana grande rabitt hole hahaha, you with not regret it.💗

Ara Araragi

So you're saying you're mad that the girl in the wheelchair didn't stand up? 🤔

JustinCase Reacts

90%+ of the sets are actually practical. They were built and precisely made and intricate. The singing was done live on set. They had the stages built with a crap ton of mics. Ariana and Cynthia insisted they sang live. Ariana and Cynthia couldn't haven't been casted any better for Galinda/Glinda and Elphaba. Both acting and singing. Galinda/Glinda is a complex character. She came from money and was told being loved and popular is better over anything else. I think she's a mix of naive (mostly), self aware to some degree but also dumb. She's the "mean girl" but Elphaba has a good influence on her and changes over time. Jonathan Bailey is Fiyero. He was in the newest Jurassic Park and also is in Bridgerton. I'm happy you pointed out during the song Popular Ariana tapped the red shoes 3 times. Definitely a throwback to the Wizard of Oz. The big green train that took them to The Emerald City is a real functional train they built. The original Galinda/Glinda and Elphaba from Broadway made a cameo as "The Wise Ones." Idina (who played Elsa in Frozen) was Elphaba and Kristen was Galinda/Glinda. The guy who said "The Wizard will see you now." is Stephen Schwartz who is also the composer of the Broadway and movie versions of Wicked. I highly recommend you see Wicked on stage if it's possible. The movie is based of the book Wicked and the stageplay plus added material. Wicked Part 1 - this one is Act 1 of the musical. The second movie Wicked For Good is Act 2 of the musical. Jeff Goldbloom loves "magic" and does magic tricks for fun. So the coin was him doing a magic trick. The big animatronic face in the wizards room is fully functional. Glinda aka Ariana ad libbed a lot in the movie on the spot that wasn't written in the script. She was amazing in her role. The part where Elphaba/Cynthia was flying on the broom was real. She flew around the room while live singing Defying Gravity attached to a harness and cables. Cynthia is a robot I swear. She's not human. I cry everytime I watch this movie (which is 74 times BTW) especially at the Ozdust scene and Defying Gravity. Please watch the next movie. It answers a lot of questions and sheds light to so much.

Nate

OMG, dude! The first half of this I was like "there's no way he hasn't seen this, he's like predicting everything", but then halfway through, your predictions weren't quite as accurate! :) I'm so happy you're doing this. It's one of my favorite musicals of all time. It's amazing how you're picking up on the depth of the story. There's so much there, and I'm glad, because it makes you appreciate it that much more. One of many amazing themes in this movie is the idea that history can sometime portray a false reality - what is deemed bad was actually good. There's a great song about it later on in the 2nd film that the wizard sings about this. I can't wait to see you do part two. Oh, by the way, yes, the musical is just like this. They added a few story bits here and there and a couple of new songs to make it longer for the movie, but 90% of this is from the musical. Plus the additions were brilliant - they only enhanced the story more. Oh, and the two women who sang during the little play in a play about the Wizard, they were the original Glinda and Elphaba in the broadway music (Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth). It was a fun nod to include them. Oh, and the guy that says "The Wizard will see you now" is Stephen Schwartz - he wrote the music and lyrics for the musical. I had the great honor of having dinner with him once in San Francisco with my then boyfriend and two other friends. Stephen is a brilliant musician! There are only 2 movies. The first movie covers the first half of the musical and the 2nd movie the 2nd half. Literally the break between them is where intermission is in the musical. For the most part, I agree. Glinda is just naive and self-absorbed. And while she made a great transformation in developing a care for Elphaba, in the end, unfortunately, her true self-absorbed self came through as she chose herself over the animals, while Elpheba chose the animals. And yes, I'd agree, this is a damn near perfect movie. The costumes, sets, dancing, singing, acting, story, music - everything absolutely flawless! This is my second favorite musical. My favorite is Into the Woods. Wink wink. I highly recommend you watch the stage version (there's a video of it) rather than the more recent movie. The stage version is so much better in my opinion. It's another really "deep", emotional one that deals with similar, but also different themes. It was an absolute pleasure to rewatch it "with you". Your genuine reactions are such a breath of fresh air. It's nice to see someone feel something so real, the way that I do. You are a joy, my friend. And seriously, I've watched other people react to this, and you're the first to truly understand it and its depth. The subtle details you picked up on show how incredibly perceptive you are. You're a wise one, sir!

Ashleigh

They both did majority of their singing roles live. Which was a massive task on set to try and eliminate any outside sound as much as possible. Cynthia erivo demanded to sing live for defying gravity. She did all her own stunts for that song while singing live which is just insane to think about considering just how incredible she sounds!

Ara Araragi

Wait a second... A crazy-powerful magic girl who has a younger sister, a rival/friend from school, a pointy hat, delusions of grandeur, and a future life-altering encounter with an isekai protagonist (Dorothy)? This is basically just the Megumin spinoff!

Nate

Right! He actually gets it!

Glen Haslerud

I can’t emphasize enough how profoundly this movie and its second part permanently altered my brain chemistry and changed me for good. Your reaction was priceless.

Nate

Same with me. I thought "Oh no, they cast a pop star in one of the lead roles, this is doomed to fail." I was INCREDIBLY pleasantly surprised with Ariana's performance!

Hridayinee

So happy you loved this perfect movie. Yes you'll adore the stage musical. It's my fave And I've seen it twice, once on Broadway and once in New Zealand. Both movies are my absolute fave movies ever. Especially the first. But also love the 2nd and i know in my heart you will too. Buckle up for a bumpy ride, some of your predictions may be right but not knowing the story of Wicked separate to the Wizard of Oz, I don't think you'll predict everything that happens! Can you imagine these powerhouse singers did it all LIVE for the movie along with their acting.. and Cynthia as Elphaba singing whilst stunt flying in the air!!?!!!!! Enjoy the next movie and can't wait to watch it with you next week.

Mary Hatch

Exactly! I knew she had the vocal talent in some respect to sing the songs but I wasn’t super confident it would feel like Glinda rather than just Ariana grande singing songs from wicked. But I was pleasantly surprised! so glad I was wrong!

Yogesh Mehta

Wow all these years and I never realized I've been conflating the the two this whole time. Thanks for the catch (fixed it now)

Cookiee

Thank you so much for this amazing reaction, i could not stop crying with you. This is my fave musical of all time next after The Sound Of Music which i hope you will react to in the future. I can not wait for you to watch Part 2, i am so excited!!! Watched it three times in the movies. You make me love this movie even more, thank you for this wholesome reaction.

Felix Rivera

I enjoy your reaction and mentioning constantly you hear the young voice on Cynthia in the songs. She mentioned in an interview the control of the vocals and sound of her voice was intentional sounding softer earlier to show her youth and innocence. As the movie builds you can hear it shifting and she tweaks it through to the film onto the last song being Gravity where the strength / confidence comes through. She is a master in her vocal ability to make us feel and not just listen.

Cookiee

YES! He nailed it with this reaction, it was on point!

TheWhiteWolves

Real shame we have to wait til next week for the 2nd movie, this is one film that both parts should be watched back to back, they are essentially just one huge movie split into 2 parts.

Audrey Gianelli

Cynthia Erivo is a staged trained actress, made an incredible career at Broadway, she had an Oscar’s, Tony, Grammy and Emmy nomination. There are many videos on YouTube of her singing, her voice is so incredible.

Audrey Gianelli

Cynthia and Ariana become best friends on this movie and had made a lot of matching tatoos to honor this journey.

SidekickSteph

Tom Holland and Bradley Cooper for me 😂

Audrey Gianelli

The prince Fyero is played by Jonathan Bailey known best as Anthony Bridgerton in the THE BRIDGERTON tv show, but also appear in the last Jurassic Park (with Scarlett Johansson), Fellow Traveler (a limited TV show with Matt Bomer) and was last year the first openly gay men to be named the most sexiest man alive. He also have huge carrière on theater stage in England

Audrey Gianelli

I a not 100% sure but the dance between Elphaba and Galinda have been partially improvised between the actresses, and her crying wasn’t plan, she was carry by the emotion and Ariana Grande naturally tell her it’s gonna be alright. This two had such a connection during the rehearsal and the shooting that a lot of moments were improvised.

AndreaB123

Since you've fallen in love with Cynthia here, and already love Taylor Swift, I gotta recommend Taylor Swift - I Did Something Bad (Cover) | By Shoshana Bean and Cynthia Erivo. I can't think of anything more up your alley.

Ronda Bennett

1:20:59 that's Johnathan Bailey 🥰 (not Tom Holland🤭) He plays Anthony in Bridgerton and the latest Jurassic Park movie (I haven't seen that tho, so not sure of his characters's name.)

Ronda Bennett

1:27:05 Def practical! They hired parkour artists to do those parts.🔥

Audrey Gianelli

At 2:34:45 the two « actresses » acting on scene are the original broadway Glinda (blonde one) and Elphaba (who is by the way the actress playing Elsa in Frozen). That’s why the play to « fight » for attention on scene like their former character used to do. So cute they come back for the movie .

Kadda

i cried even more the second time ich watched it here with you :-D

Brooke McLaughlin

NOW ITS TIME FOR YOU TO REACT TO ARIANA GRANDE'S MUSIC TRUST YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT

Ronda Bennett

2:37:07 That is the original Glenda (Kristin Chenoweth) and the original Elphaba (Idina Menzel, who also is the voice of Elsa btw) This scene moment is special. It represents kind of a passing of the torch to Ariana and Cynthia from the originals. Which reminds me you should totally react to "Wicked: One Wonderful Night" a live musical tv special that the cast did, with all the songs from this movie. It's on Peacock streaming sevice. Pure perfection.🤗

Thiago LIma

Thank you Luke for this reaction ❤️🤗

Jennifer Ambrose

Oh you need to watch Cynthia Erivo’s Tony performance from The Color Purple. She just blew everyone away. Broadway royalty. Also look up her performance of Gethsemene from Jesus Christ Superstar

Laura W.

I'm currently in the hospital and this was just the video I needed to take my mind off things. Thank you for reacting to Wicked! I'd also like to recommend Epic: The Musical (it's based on The Odyssey)! Thanks again 😊

Cramdeon1969

Is EPIC on a Streaming Platform? I've heard about it but never seen it 🤔

Jennifer Ambrose

I think it’s fun to watch how amazed people are when they see choreography, singing, and acting like this when Broadway/ west End folks do it live 8 times a week. :) the musical theater nerd in me delights :)

Laura W.

It's actually on YouTube. The writer (and singer of the lead character) released the musical in sagas on music platforms and then different animators created animatics for each song! So it's kind of an animated musical that's free on YouTube!

Emma

Oh you really need to check out some of Cynthis Erivo's live performances. My personal favourite is her performance of Alfie at the Kennedy Center and then there's also her tribute at the Grammys last year.

Anthony Velasquez

Musicals I hope you check out in the future if you need som recs are: Rent Tick Tick Boom In The Heights Newsies(stage version) can be found on Disney + probably on Amazon Prime as well

Vicki

31:45 Miss Coddle - Head Shizstress. She looks familiar as she played the bearded lady in The Greatest Showman and sang This Is Me. Her name is Keala Settle.

Kristen Sayers

Can’t wait for your reaction to part 2!

Valentine

Exactly the color purple was where I 1st heard her

Tasia Dey

You made my weekend!! Thanks for reaching all of us the way you always do. I hope you watch it with your family too. The movie has so many messages that affect us in this crazy world we live in. See you for Part 2.

Laura

Wicked is a musical thats always made me emotional, defying gravity is my favourite song of all time. As someone whos autistic and whos been put down most of their life this song is such a f u to everyone whos belittled me. Its a battlecry. So powerful.

Ameena Thompson

Hey Luke..gotta do Dream Girls, and Cadillac Records with our girl 👑🐝

Ninnin

Luke has already reacted to Epic. :) You should be able to find the reactions here or on YouTube.

Laura W.

Oh awesome! Thanks for letting me know!

Jennifer Ambrose

What’s crazy is that’s the end of Act 1 of the musical

Jennifer Ambrose

Ooooh. Luke should do Across the Universe. It’ll blow his mind with its Julie Taymor craziness.

Jennifer Ambrose

I feel like the movie tortured the songs so badly it’s not worth it though

Jenny Jordan

Also in that scene are the musical's composer and book writer, plus a former Fiyero.

Richie Lopez

to answer your question, they filmed the vocals live while recording… so all that’s seen in the movie was sung live while filming.

Mal 🦦

I've seen this movie countless times yet I was crying right long with you the entire time

Finelia Braun

The way Elphaba feels is how many vegans feel. We just try to point out the obvious wrongs we do to sentient beings and people see us as wicked and wrong. x.X This movie helped me convince some of my friends finally becoming vegan as well. If you are angry at how they treat the animals in the movie, it's a perfect start for you to understand the concept of veganism. Be an Elphaba in a world full of Wizards. <3

Tony T.

Funny thing is, there is a deleted scene in the movie where Glinda was upset about Elphaba and Fiyero running off together to save the cub, but she was upset because, according to her: "I would've helped you. If you needed someone, you could've picked *me*..." There's always been a subset of fans who clocked the strangely... more than friends relationship that Elphie and Glinda had in the text (and hell, even in the musicals). The author of the book himself commented on it as well, although we're still not sure if the intent is there, many of the actresses who took on Elphaba and Galinda nonetheless played it as such as a sorta wink wink subtext. There's also been a belief, hell I think Ariana Grande mentioned it in all her interviews, that Glinda in the movies was probably a little bit in love with Elphaba herself, but just didn't know it! Theirs is a tragic friendship nonetheless, and it was a real treat watching you experience the story's unexpected twists and turns. Something to keep in mind before watching part 2, as well! :D Thank you!

Noah Kahan

One of the things you may or may not notice is practically every time Galinda uses the word good in dialogue it's connected with her doing something that's actually wicked

Daniel Kemp

Loved this reaction and cannot wait for part 2. I would also love if you could react to Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Hairspray

Sarah Jones

The two female 'wise ones' who you said were brilliant are actually Idina Menzal and Kristin Chenoweth - who played the original Elphaba and Glinda in the stage show. Also the film is very much based on the play (with a bit more filler)

Kindred Tatum

And given he just recently watched the Frozen movies, Idina also voices Elsa! It's a bit common for actresses who played Elphaba on Broadway to go on and play Elsa in the Frozen musical.

mona

PLEASE react to Ariana grandes “excuse me I love you” on Netflix. The most insane vocals known to mankind!!

Haley

Wicked is a lesson about humanity- we all sit back and watch horrible things happen to other people, like professor Dillamond, and we do nothing. We bully those different than us and follow the actions of those perceived popular in order to fit in. The munchkins and most of Oz have sheep mentality, just listening to whatever lies they are fed and being manipulated by evil people in power. Celebrating someone dying alone just because the popular powerful people said she was bad, when in fact she was the one standing up for equality, inclusion, and the rights of animals. Ultimately Glinda is right, popularity is all that matters- we will not listen to activists irl because they don’t have power, popularity, or the general public’s backing. They are the outcasts. We will only listen to someone easier to swallow.. like Glinda. Iykyk

Brianna W

I’m not kidding.. bring two boxes of tissues for the next movie. I promise you’ll need them!!

Sydney Barrett

We are animals that eat meat...get over it

izzy

YES!! i signed up for patreon just for this! cant wait for part 2!!

AdamLovesMusic

Great reaction. I would definitely say the broadway version for Les Mis.

Shy

Wicked the movie was my first experience to it as well. My friend had us go watch it as she’s been a huge fan from the book and play before this movie! And I have to agree with everything you said, it is seriously just incredible, acting and music~ I’ll admit Part 2, wasn’t as good. Song wise (except for a few). But, I still liked it. Just that Part 1 is a masterpiece to me full of enjoyment! But, it’s known by a lot of Wicked fans that the second act was never as good as the first even in the play. So, at least I wasn’t alone in thinking that when I went to go see part 2. Still, I think you’ll enjoy it a lot! ☺️ Can’t wait to see! Freaking adored your reaction to this first part!

Willow

What an absolute joy it was to watch this reaction! I found myself crying all over again at the end with you. I still haven't seen the second part (although I have seen the stage musical) and I can't wait to watch it on my own so that I can enjoy when you react to Part 2 yourself. Also, yeah, I definitely recommend seeing it on stage! It's a bit different for sure, but I remember it being so much fun. Thank you for such a great reaction video! I've enjoyed your musical reactions so much and I'm looking forward to any you do in the future <3

Noah Kahan

After doing wicked you should do all of Ariana's pop music

R

So glad you're on the musical journey now! Wicked is one of my all time favorite musicals, it was worth waiting 20 years for it to be made into a movie! And it has just been released in Japan, I watched the second one in cinema on the day you uploaded this video haha :) Can't wait to see your reaction! Please add "Dear Evan Hansen", "Les Miserables" and "The Phantom of the Opera" on your list!!

Kenneth Hoerz

The Great Wise Ones in OZ that sing about the old times, are the Elphaba (Idina Menzel) and Glinda (Kristin Chenoweth) from the Original Broadway version of Wicked.

J C

I think for many of us who are die-hard fans of the stage show were really worried about how Wicked would translate to film. But I have to agree with you - the casting was incredible, the music was amped up to another level, the set design and choreography was amazing. They really did justice to this musical and I can't wait to watch the next part with you. :)

Alexis Allen

I don't think you understand how I love listening to your commentary- it's real refreshing to have someone think so alike as me watching these! Would recommend Chicken Little 🐔 or Ultraman Rising on Netflix 🙏🏽here's to hoping and I hope you continue with more movie reactions

Finelia Braun

But that's the good thing: We don't have to. :) It's a choice to be cruel.

Leslie Nick Haver

Have I see this movie 20+ times? Did I watch it again with you? Also yes. You’ve earned a new patron!

Leslie Nick Haver

An interesting note about Cynthia Erivo’s singing as Elphaba is that she intentionally changed her vocal delivery throughout the movie. She wanted Elphaba’s voice to progress with the character’s growth. Her early songs are exuberant, youthful, wistful even…leading to her final song which is powerful, strong and full of emotion.

Emily Irvine

Wicked was my pick in your poll so I have been eagerly awaiting this reaction! I'm so glad you loved it! They really did do justice to the stage production with these movies. They kept the main story the same, they just expanded the world and scenes more in the movies since they had so much extra time to play with (the whole stage show is about the length of just one of the movies). You can tell that everyone who worked on these movies truly cared about what they were creating and wanted to do the stage production fans justice. You should watch the video of Ariana and Cynthia finding out they got the roles. It is so sweet. They both wanted the roles so much. Ariana has talked about wanting to play Glinda since she was a child and really put in the effort to try to get the role so it was amazing to see her get it after wanting it for so long. The second movie, though not as good as the first in my opinion, is still really amazing and ties the story up so nicely. It's set about a year after the first movie ends. I hope it blows your mind!

summer closson

now my question is are you going to share these experiences with your family?

Emily Lorence

Seeing your emotional reaction to Defying Gravity made this musical theatre kid proud. It’s gorgeous. And mad respect to Cynthia Erivo for singing this live and in a harness. Just pure athleticism and vocal artistic control. Ariana Grande is superb as Glinda. And I’m thrilled to see you react to Part 2. I’ve always been an Act 2 girlie so I hope you give it a chance.

Thiago LIma

see Cynthia sing “I‘m Here” from The Color Purple

Zachary D

I subscribed for this and you didn't disappoint. <3

Aaren YASS

The OZdust scene is so amazing. Galinda not only acknowledged Elphy's kindness, but that she and her were very similar. Galinda feigns ignorance sometimes or tries to turn situations around into a positive. She's constantly reading what others think of her or feel in a situation. Both are of status, Where Elphy pushes people away and Galinda flips things so people are drawn to her in order to elevate her status. A coquette barbie and a preppy goth.

Lucia J

Hope you're doing good man. Back pain is no joke, take it easy!

Amy Roberts

The two ladies in the play when they got to the city are Kristen Chenowith and Idina Menzel, the first Galinda and Elphaba! And Idina was also.... Elsa! Love that you're watching so much Idina lately :D I was such a mess in the theater when this came out, I did not recover for like two weeks haha

Maria Amado

Don’t know if anyone else mentioned it, but here’s a fun fact for Luke, if he catches this comment: one of the actresses who plays Elphaba on the original broadway musical is the same actress that does Elsa’s voice on Frozen. The one in pink when they watch the play in Oz.

Leslie Nick Haver

I didn’t know this existed ! Now I must find it.

Leslie Nick Haver

That’s why I thought she did it…to thank her for trying to make Nessa happy (even though we know that was not her true motive).

lemonkatze

cant wait for the sequel

lemonkatze

obviously i cant read all the comments but the movie is like the musical+ because there is some stuff added from the books that the musical is based off of also some stuff was added to some songs and the like

Tanzi Mitchell

Can you make it so your videos can be casted to a TV. Maybe it's just me but I keep getting errors I don't get with other creators and usually when that happens it has something to do with how the video is saved or is casting is blocked

Sarah Blum

I cannot watch these movies without sobbing! They're so powerful! Can't wait to watch your reaction to Wicked: For Good

SuSa Ackles

Watched both movies to the premiere and again in the cinema! I was obsesseeeed! Still have to see the actual musical. Seeing it at Broadway with indina menzel would be crazy actually. Loooooooove how they made these movies! And it wasnt that much greenscreen! Thats crazy. Like The tulpi field was actually REALLLLL Planted for this set Its crazy!!!

SuSa Ackles

And the way cynthia and ariana saaaang! Holy shit

SuSa Ackles

Btw Ariana met the actor of „Boq“ at this movie set Sooooo One thing led to another LOL And he cheated on his soon-to-be-mother wife with ariana….. 😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️

SuSa Ackles

I CRIED SOOOOO MUCH Watching Both movies The topics friendship and persecution/racism are sooooo heavy Especially in a time of ICE, genocide, global pandemic of loneliness etc And to make a musical out of it is crazy Had me sobbing

Sarah Blum

Me too! I've seen both several times now and literally can't watch without sobbing :(

Sarah Blum

Yeah big reason I don't like Slater.

HGranger

Alot of people hate on Glinda for not going but I don't think thats fair. They are what 18? Probably pretty scared and Elphaba is basically asking Glinda to go against what is the government. Glinda wasn't asking her to give up her cause just go about it differently. Keep your head down work with them and work from within the system. So I do understand Glindas point of view, however I also understand Elphabas too. The no this is wrong and I will not be a part of it in any shape or form point of view.

HGranger

Where is wicked for good? I went to watch it and I can't find it.

Emily Nye

It's so interesting to read the book and see just how much Animals (who can speak) and animals (who can't) are differentiated. You have to see the text to really get the full effect.

Lauren

This is what brought me here; consider it my origin story. 💚🩷

Lauren

💯💯💯 Doing this movie changed Jeff Goldblum's perspective... For Good. 😊 Cynthia and Ariana were already vegan, but this just made their feelings even stronger.

Sarah Handberg

I find it very funny and endearing that Luke is so surprised that so many of the actors can sing, when he’s watching a MUSICAL😂😂
