Hi! Love watching your videos you’re so amazing! Can you please do a reaction to In The Heights? It’s made by the same person who created and directed Hamilton! 😁😁😁

pen

OMGGGG

Sage_Mode_Q

One of my favorites. Eddie Murphy was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as well. Jimmy got Soul!

pen

So excited for you to see her other movies, too!

Sydney Barrett

It's 330 am and I'm ready 💪 🤪 😎 😌

Nayaaa

Great reaction hopefully later in the future we get obsessed and Carmen

fry

GOD this is such a good movie/musical 😭 also rewatching with you why did i just catch the line of the fake kid michael jackson say he was waiting for “deena” like wow i can’t believe they really went there mentioning michael and diana’s relationship

ThatSingerReactions

you might've gotten this 100 times but yeah they made beyonce pull her voice back for this character. listen is when they let her unleash lol this was the most nominated movie at the oscars the follwing year ever

HKAMILAH

Renaissance movie now please 🤍

Miranda Cook

“Maybe it’s just a happy feel good film” 😬😬😬

Anamaria McKenzie

Soooo happy you’ve reacted to this!!! Bey is an amazing actress!! Jennifer Hudson (Effie) also has an amazing voice, maybe check out some of her music/performances too!

Helena

You need to react to Beyonce interview about dreamgirls she explains how she worked for the role & had to pull back her singing voice for this role. I’m sure it was on oprah with Jamie fox. Also she sings listen live too. Not sure if you have seen it but it’s worth reacting to again with the interview, gives it more meaning after watching the interview & dreamgirls 🐝💛

Miranda Cook

The lady singing at Jimmys memorial is Loretta Devine, she originated the role of Lorrell on Broadways Dreamgirls.

Bria

Effie can be selfish but I see it as passion. She's a passionate artist and was never really meant to be in a group. From the start, she always wanted to be unique; never wanted to wear the same wigs and dresses as the others, not just to be difficult, but conformity is just for not her. The more she felt restricted, the more she lashed out. I love how when she goes solo, we see her wearing her natural hair, and more creative outfits, and overall having the breathing room for personal growth because she's finally able to express herself. I think Effie's journey is the struggle that of a lot of creatives have; wanting that creative success but struggle with having to conform to what they don't like. Love that you finally saw Dreamgirls; great reaction as always!! 🎤

Leah B

I believe Jennifer Hudson (Effie) received an Oscar for this role. She is now an EGOT.

Felicia Adams

Funny you mention Simon Cowell 🤣 (Effie) Jennifer Hudson was a contestant on American Idol and Simon had some not so nice things to say to her. After this movie, he gave her an public apology!! It was big of Simon and the apology was well deserved 👏🏽

Ahmir B

(Not finished the reaction yet, at AIATY) Luke have you not heard of Jennifer Hudson??😭 She’s phenomenal. She was on American Idol (alongside winner of the season Fantasia) and was sent home, but this was her breakout role for which she won an Oscar. She is now a rare EGOT winner and has an amazing career! You should check her work out for sure

Jie

They’re based on the Supremes with Beyoncé’s character being Diana Ross.

Jie

This was Jennifer Hudson’s first ever film. Prior to this she was only known for being on American Idol where she finished in 7th place and Simon Cowell was cruel to her. She got raves for this and won an Oscar.

botanbutton

I say this is the movie that made Beyoncé an actress. I didn't think she could act all that much before but this role really pushed her and upped her chops. And this is not to say she was terrible, just a little wooden. Obsessed is a good film for that reason, it was after Dreamgirls. The improvement shows.

Jaywoot

You need to react to Beyoncé movie obsessed 10/10

Leigh-Sherri Hays

Everyone loves this movie for Beyonce.. but honestly Jennifer Hudson is my favorite

Deanna Gast

Awww I was so excited to get this notification! It was fun watching with you! The actress for Lorell is the voice of Tiana from the Princess and the Frog! A personal favorite of mine!

Leigh-Sherri Hays

Yeah Eddie Murphy sings a lot in his movies lol.. check out the band Sexual Chocolate lmao cuz im sure you haven't seen Coming To America 😂

Jennifer Ambrose

This cast is stacked with Broadway talent in the smaller parts. Both Dule Hill and Anika Noni Rose are Broadway vets.

Nikkelz

That's on stream tonight. Vod will be up tomorrow

Dizzy

If you want to check out another Beyonce movie where she sings, you would LOVE Cadillac Records

Curwin Sphere

I've been waiting for this and you did not disappoint! You should watch Cadillac Records as well. Beyoncé portrays the iconic Etta James flawlessly with great renditions of her songs. And get into Obsessed as well.

m

This was great

Ced

You should check out the dreamgirls Oscars performance

Joslen Owmby

Definitely do Cadillac Records!

Shanelle Maria

Haven’t watched this movie in so long. Was wondering if you’ve watched Hairspray? I think you would love it.

PoshDoll

LOVED CARMEN!

Jie

I think her best performance is in Cadillac Records

Michael

Such a classic!!!!

Kimmy C

Hey! Have you tried uploading your patreon exclusive videos as an unlisted video on YouTube? You can share the link here. That way we have the choice to watch here or on TV.

StickyKeys

The thing about Effie is she's 18 and has been singing since a child. She wasn't being selfish when she turned down the Jimmie deal at the beginning, she wanted the group to not get trapped into constantly singing backup and never fulfilling their dreams. And literally everything she said was right. They kept telling her wait your turn, we'll put you on and when the time came, they still passed her over.

StickyKeys

She's angry and on top of all of that she believes her best friend is sleeping with the man she loves. Deena's mom didn't want Deena involved bc she knows what that industry can do and we can see that btwn Lorrel (who is Princess Tiana BTW!) and Jimmy. It's not in Effie's nature to show chill so I wouldn't expect that from her, but I'm not mad at her reaction when the very thing she tried to fight coming back and biting specifically her.

StickyKeys

Also, it was always the plan for Effie to be highlighted. She was their manager and she always wanted them as a group. She was rightfully scared she'd get tossed aside, she was darker, she was bigger and she had a Black sound. Now being sidelined dashed her hopes even more and she doesn't know how to navigate the industry to do for herself. Team Effie! 😂

Aaren YASS

If you have Chromecast, you can watch this on TV.

StickyKeys

Also, I haven't gotten to the end yet, but this is a facsimile of the Diana Ross x Berry Gordy story.

H T

When you refer to "easy" vs. "rough" sounds, it should be emphasized it mainly means Curtis was trying to make the group more white-passing pop vs. Black and soulful. The director of the movie also says that Bey has to extremely restrain her voice to make her sounding more toned down and Diana-esque.

Aiofe

Dreamgirls is loosely based on Motown, the rise of the Supremes specifically & Berry Gordy. Deena is based on Diana Ross & Effie is based on Florence Ballard (and influences of Aretha Franklin, Etta James and others of the era) who was the original lead singer of the Supremes until Gordy pushed Diana to the forefront. Ballard was fired from the group after a lot of internal struggles, missing rehearsal and performances due to her drinking. Diana Ross became one of the greatest R & B stars of all time and Florence ended up on welfare. The photo shoot scene even depicts Beyonce’s Deena in Diana Ross (& Dorothy Dandridge) inspired pictures. Other characters were influenced by James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Smokey Robinson & others from the Motown Sound.

Aiofe

Dule Hill is not in Dreamgirls. If you’re referring to C. C. - he is played by Keith Robinson. But original Dreamgirls are in the film. With the original Lurell (Loretta Devine) making an appearance. As well as Deena’s mother was played by Yvette Cason who was Jennifer Holiday’s understudy for Effie in the original broadway run, then starred as Effie in the revival and international tour.

Aiofe

This is a great point. People with no experience with colorism, it would be easy to over look. Deena is viewed as more beautiful than Effie due to her size, yes, but also her lighter skin makes her more appealing to white audiences. Its not as discussed so explicitly in the film I think for a few reasons. One, as a stage play Deena and Effie have been played by multiple actresses and the role wasn’t originated by a light-skin actress. Also, as a show loosely based on the Supremes, Diana Ross isn’t as light as Beyonce. But, in this film, that undertone of appealing to acceptable white beauty standards cannot be overlooked. Effie and Deena both fall victim to tropes. Effie is the fat, angry mammy figure while Deena is the softer, lighter, younger ingenue. But ingenues are often viewed as malleable, empty and naive.

Aiofe

I love how you try to see all sides. All of the characters are in the right and in the wrong depending on the moment, situation and POV. Effie was screwed over partially because her look wasn’t “right” but also partially because of her poor attitude. She was absolutely treated terribly at times, but her ego and behavior had a lot to do with how things shook out. She was sick in the end, but it was hard for them to believe it because she had been lying to miss rehearsals and shows thinking she couldn’t be replaced. (Based on the back story of Florence Ballad). But Effie still has the ability to just break your heart because she did just want to be loved and not shuffled aside because she wasn’t small and pretty and easy. Deena wasn’t having an affair with Curtis. But once Effie was out, she fell quick and hard to Curtis’ manipulations. She was very young and naive. Which is why LISTEN is such a powerful moment. She finally starts taking ownership of her own life. Curtis was a manipulator and user. But also a brilliant businessman who wasn’t exactly incorrect when he saw the way they could be marketed and pushed to success.

Aiofe

I think Cadillac Records is a must watch. I’d also like to see him watch Get On Up. Not enough is talked about Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of James Brown!

Aiofe

She came into her own with Cadillac Records.

Aiofe

Carmen- the Hip Hopera! Oh, that was a TIME. 😂

Carys2468

Next Disney movie should be The Princess and the Frog! It has the lady who plays as Lorelle: Anika Noni Rose

Tiffany

Loved THIS!!

Carys2468

Guys, he’s gonna love Cowboy Carter

Darryl King

I enjoyed my Saturday night watching one of my favorite movies with you. True story, growing up I was in the band, so before school started, my friends and I would meet up by the band room and sing all these songs lol.

Kate

This is based on the story of The Supremes. I admit I am NOT a Beyoncé fan outside of some of Destiny's Child but she does have a hell of a voice. This is the best she's ever sounded IMO. Jennifer Hudson also has a HELL of a voice and this was her debut role after American Idol IIRC. Not enough people go in on Anika Noni Rose though. She puts so much sweetness, strength and emotion into Lorelle and her voice made her a Disney princess after this. The first black Disney princess even!

J C

What I love about this movie adaptation is that you can tell that the cast, crew, and director really tried to honor the original Broadway production as much as possible - and it was beautiful to see many Broadway veterans cast in the movie - from Anika Noni Rose as Lorell, to Yvette Cason (Deena's mother) to Hinton Battle (Curtis' assistant), Ken Page (the club owner Max, who was also in the original Broadway production of Cats), and my personal favorite, the legend Loretta Devine who played Jimmy Early's jazz singer friend who sang that song at his memorial, but who more importantly played the role of Lorell, Jimmy's love interest, in the original Broadway stage production. Jennifer Hudson definitely deserved the Oscar for her performance in this movie. She is a phenomenal talent in her own right, and I think she did justice to the role that was originated by Jennifer Holliday (which you should also check out on Youtube!). I'm really glad that you loved this movie. It's a great one! Now let's watch something fun like the 2007 version of "Hairspray" which is based off of the musical. :)

Bella Raye Maven

Loved your reaction to one of my most fav movies! I have watched it a hundred times over the last 20 years and I still cry every single time. Wish you had let the credits play through. It's great when they show all the stars & names and the last but not least one says introducing... Jennifer Hudson as Effie. It was her very first movie after American Idol. 🥹❤️ I love this movie soooo much!

kldoss89

As soon as he said that, all I could think was "oh geez, it's gonna be one of those kinds of reacts. Poor guy!" Lol!

Dana (Dah-Nah)

this is the first reaction i have ever watched where the person wasn't automatically on Effie's side. i do wish they made it more apparent with the girls ages in the beginning, i feel like a lot of people don't realise how young they are until Lorrell says she's 18 now

Curwin Sphere

I would also love to see you watch/react to Tina Turner's biopic "What's love got to do with it." If you haven't already. Angela's Bassett's performance is amazing! You'd definitely love it.

Stacey A.

Did you know that Eddie Murphy had his own album in 1985 called? How could it be? His hit from that album was called Party all the time. He eventually made 3balbums 3 album's total How could it be in 1985 So happy in 1989 Love's alright in 1993

Adelle

Wow, I’m truly getting fed! First, I got more ATLA, then Renaissance, now one of my favorite movies of all time? This is exactly what I needed today 🥹 Ooh also, seeing Anika Noni Rose (who plays Lorrell) has made me realize that Luke NEEDS to watch the Princess and the Frog! Anika plays Tiana and gave us one of the best Disney princess performances of all time. She truly doesn’t get enough praise and recognition for her immense talent and cultural impact as the first Black Disney princess

Eva

Jennifer Hudson who plays Effie is a world renowned singer first and foremost. this performance of "Your gonna love me" earned her so much recognition. I really would love to see a deep dive into her story and music, it is gonna warm your heart so much. Also your comment about Simon Cowell is funny because you have nooo idea her history with him and how it ultimately lead to her being in Dream Girls.

ThatSingerReactions

ahhh my dear incredible brother thats thee jennifer hudson and it's crazy because beyonce is one of her inspirations she watched her growing up also.

Linda Wolf

i have been waiting for you to do first reaction to this film. I love your videos. Next film suggestion: Fiddler on the Roof, Funny Girl, Chorus Line. I think you would enjoy them..

Harmony

You can actually watch the entire broadway show on Youtube! It is much longer than the movie. Search "Dreamgirls Original Broadway" Someone smuggled a camera in to record it

Lem

Please react to HAIRSPRAY, I would love to see your reaction, and I have a feeling you would LOVE IT!!!

Anthony

Austin Powers Goldmember Should Definitely Be On The Beyoncé Watch List. Especially Carmen: A Hip Hopera !! Very First Of Her Films (Carmen Was A TV Movie, Then She Starred In Golmember).

Alanna

I guess so, in the movie; hadn't thought of that either. Interestingly enough, with the Supremes, it was the opposite (the real Effie was lighter)

Leily

My favorite movie ever🥹 how did I miss this notification

Leily

They’re apparently bringing Dreamgirls back to broadway this year and I’m never been more excited 😩

Jae Right

Loretta Divine, who sings “I Miss You” originated the role of Lorrell on Broadway. So, it’s fitting that her cameo was singing at Jimmy’s wake.

Rigo

Luke pleeeease watch Cadillac Records and Obsessed, both starring Beyoncé!

Criss080

Who else would just sit and watch movies with Luke all day?? This was so fun 🥰🥰

Teriagotemhookd

You gotta do Cadillac Records and Fighting Temptation. Beyoncé's in both. My favorite is Fighting Temptations

Dev-Nord

You must react to the movie Obsessed! Starring our favorite girl 😭

Sian Pursglove

This was my first watch from you and I love that you’re not afraid to show emotion, would love to see more musical movies

Bey Brown

To answer your questions in the beginning. They started out as teenagers 16/17. So, Beyonce/Deena had to sneak out because her mom did mot approve which made it even more gross how Jimmy came on to 16 yr old Lorrell.

Bey Brown

Curtis was an opportunist! He saw Deena first and was fascinated until he saw it was Effie he needed to manipulate. She was stronger and was obviously the decision maker in the beginning. He went for Deena first chance he got, whether it started before or after Effie was kicked out is up for debate. Deena was manipulated but she wasn’t fully innocent either, she also saw an opportunity.

JLeo

any B reaction, I am here for it

Singing Wordwright

"I don't know what's going on here." - Racism. It's racism going on here. The white audience was turned off by Jimmy being too black. Same with Effie. Her voice was too soulful for an audience intimidated by anyone being too black in looks or style.

Lady Marie

Yep... Jennifer Hudson did win an Oscar for her role as Effie.
