Breezee92

I recommend watching "Newsies Filmed live on Broadway"

Kai

YES!! Just a fun fact. The guy that played Michael on tick tick boom, is the original broadway cast's Sonny!

Amy Bedster

Also this predates Hamilton by about a decade 😂

In my state retailers earn a 5% commission on all draw and instant ticket sales, and receive a 1% commission for redeeming winning tickets.

Christopher Jackson who played Washington in Hamilton (2015-2016) was the original Benny on Broadway (2008-2011)

As a Puerto Rican who grew up in NYC (Brooklyn), this movie was very reminiscent of my childhood and teenage years. This movie depicts how we lived very closely. Sadly it’s not like this anymore in my old neighborhood as gentrification has made it hard for a lot of the people I grew up with to live there anymore.

Yessss

Dreamers isn't vague. "Dreamers" refers to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, have lived in the country for most of their lives, and identify as American but are not legally recognized as American citizens. The term comes from the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act) which is why in the subtitles it said 'kicking out the DREAMers'.

i love that lin manuel has his people that he hires all the time

m

Recommendation for movie musicals- Annie 2014!! Also since u watched Aladdin you should check out the live action!

Sugasweetmerciful

They were literally talking about kicking out all the dreamers. Are.

NM

I really want him to watch that too! And then maybe some deeper Sondheim cuts lol

Amy Bedster

Yessss omg! that would be so good!

kookiepup12

Not sure if anyone has mentioned yet but In The Heights was one of Lin Manuel Miranda’s first Tony-winning musicals! Hamilton was his next huge hit - though ironically the movie adaptations/releases were reversed. There’s this one video on YouTube that I love where a bunch of people surprised him with a flash mob to 96,000, I think at Universal Studios? You should check it out! 🥹

NM

Yeah Vanessa the lead of scream 5 and 6! She’s amazing

2026-10-25 09:00 Lin Manuel lives in Washington Heights and grew up just north of it. He played the leaqd of Usnavi when it opened on Broadway and Chris Jackson who played George Washington in Hamilton played Benny. Chris Jackson has a cameo in the movie as Mr Softee in the ice cream van. Lin has said he can't think of anyone better than Anthony Ramos to play Usnavi in the movie version of the musical. 34:19 GWB is the George Washington Bridge what Nina can from their apartment balcony. 47:38 at the beginning of the song in the salon (No Me Diga), the salon ladies come out with insulting "banter" to extract gossip: Vieja (old woman), Sucia (dirty girl) & Cabrona (bitch). Carla is the voice of Mirabel in Encanto.

To answer your question "What parts of NYC have I seen?" the answer is you basically visited our equivalent of 'the mall'. All of the stereotypical tourist stuff that people think is "NYC" is just Midtown. Downtown is where we all work. Which is why Manhattan has the local nickname "Work Island". No one local comes here much except to go to work. The real NYC is Up and Out -- Uptown above 125th street (Above Harlem on the north end of Central Park), or in the Outer Boroughs (Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island). Once you get Up & Out, the tourists disappear and everything you're dealing with is for the local residents and much more reflective of our daily reality. Midtown is incredibly inflated pricing for commuters and tourists. MOst of the folks you see in Midtown will NOT be New Yorkers, it's your fellow tourists. Nothing wrong with tourists (unless they're in your way moving slow), but the whole character of New York City is NOTHING like Times Square and Midtown. It's much more chill and grounded, while still being active and chaotic. I live in the Heights now. I'll go grab you a photo of the tunnel from the 191st st station. It's around the corner. The GWB is the George Washington Bridge. Never fear, the Heights have survived all attempts to gentrify. We're still a very eclectic community predominantly Latinx and a pretty significant number of artists and musicians. My neighborhood is actually called Inwood. But everyone lumps us together with the Heights. (They are up on the bluffs. We're down on the lowland. Don't worry -- I'm not cheating. Lin Manuel Miranda lived in Inwood when he wrote In the Heights and Hamilton, up at 5000 Broadway which is now the name of his production studio. Miranda featured several landmarks which are properly part of Inwood, because we all get lumped together up here.) During the blackout when Benny goes to run the dispatch, he makes an emergency dispatch call to Broadway and Nagle. Fun fact, until this past year, there is no address at that intersection -- all the front doors of the buildings face onto other streets so the address was technically empty. And it's literally 100 feet from my apartment building. I love it up here. Once you get up above Harlem, Manhattan becomes affordable, and the Latin vibe is incredible up here. Next time you and the family visit NYC, plan a trip up to The Cloisters. I'll meet you in the park and take you to Mamajuana Cafe, a Dominican restaurant that's been here for decades and some of the best food you'll ever eat.

I knew you gonna love it!! 🥹

You should see the flash mob a group put on for Lin Manuel Miranda using the song 96 thousand, it’s heartwarming

Julie Lyles

So in the musical Pacencia y Fe happened after Abuela found out that she had won the lottery. It was mostly her thinking through what she was going to do now that she had enough money to make all of her dreams come true. The last line of the song was actually the reveal “What do I do with this winning ticket? What can I do but pray? Alright Mama, OK Pacencia y Fe”. As much as I love the death scene in the movie, I think that the song loses much of its power by being used in this way rather than the one it was intended for. It was always so poetic to me that her mantra of resilience (Patience and Faith) continued to be her guiding principles even when she achieved everything she had always wanted.

sNiles

one of my favorite musicals - so glad you watched and loved it too! it was fun watching the film again with you!!

I knew you’d love the ending :)

Emily Jewett

Second this please check out the flash mob 96,000 :)

When this movie was in the works, some of the people were worried that the studio would cut the piragua character and another one of the writers of the screenplay called and said she had an idea on how to save the character...cast Lin (who did not originally intend to be in the movie at all). In the song "Breathe" (Nina's first song), the older couple who are getting out of a car and sing "Welcome Home" are Lin's parents. Getting used to noise: I grew up right across the street from a very busy set of train tracks, so loud ambient noise generally doesn't bother me. Presumably because of that, I've slept through tornado sirens and even gunshots outside right by my apartment. I left for work the next morning with cops cars and a news van right outside my building and wondered what had happened. Oops. Blacklights: If you or your wife put the laundry detergent in the washer on top of your clothes, that could have caused those spots on your shirt (blood would also be a possibility). In the original version of "96,000" Donald Trump was mentioned instead of Tiger Woods. It got changed for *ahem* reasons. The magic pen is a Tide to Go Pen.

Amy Bedster

Okay I’m like 2/3rds of the way through and now you HAVE to watch west side story! Either is good but the newer one is just phenomenal it’s the one with Rachel zegler and ansel elgort

TB

What is GWB? George Washington Bridge.

Pearl Dennis

The "miracle pen" is a Tide pen. Definitely recommend them!

astricalex

Honestly relate to this film so much 🥲 I do wish all the Spanish lyrics in the movie were translated, I think it would have hit more for you. Still one of my fave musicals

Caroline Vitanza

Literally HOW have you not watched La La land yet!!!!!!

Rashad Strother

This is wild! I literally just moved to Washington Heights 5 days ago!

I love In the Heights so much. Its where I’m from and the film really captures the feeling of that community. Also, it came out the week my Abuela passed away, so it’s particularly poignant And for those of us who lived through the 2003 NYC blackout- this film really nailed it. Walking out of the subway because the trains stopped running and having to walk 40+ blocks home in the heat, the stores boarding up because they were afraid of riots, taking all of the food out of the freezers and having a neighborhood bbq because the meat was going to spoil, opening the fore hydrants so the kids could cool down… crazy times.

Aiofe

That’s the warning of this movie. Gentrification is killing these communities and it doesn’t feel this way anymore. When I go home (I left in 2012) it’s unrecognizable.

Aiofe

It’s currently 112 degrees Fahrenheit (44C) where I am.😂

AbusiveExclusive

I don't think anyone said yet, but the salon owner whose voice you recognised is Carmilla Carmine in Hazbin Hotel.

Iron_claw

Pick back up and Finish Hell's Paradise season 2 and finish sentenced to be a hero were all sick and tired of waiting stop procrastinating

Another musical that I love, and that has amazing music and a great story is Newsies/News Boys. If you haven't seen it. There's a movie, and a Broadway version. Both are on Disney plus, and the Broadway version has been professionally recorded like Hamilton. And both have some differences in story and even songs that make both definitely worth a watch. I highly recommend.

Delayed response, I just got to this video, but I loved the bit about heat waves. my best friend is English and visited me in New England a decade ago and they still say they would love to visit again but not in the summer because they had never experienced heat as extreme as we regularly get. But that likewise means the UK doesnt have the infrastructure to handle heat like we regularly get. Same thing happens with really extreme blizzards. We get them regularly here but my friend had one winter where they had their whole town shut down for days because they got a foot of snow and didn’t have the same amount of plows/salt we expect to need to use multiple times a year.
