The major categories at the Grammys are voted on my people from all genres. The sub categories are voted on by people from that genre I believe. And hip hop and rap always get snubbed in the major categories because of that.

The Recording Academy has an explanation of the Grammy process from submissions to final voting here: https://www.recordingacademy.com/awards/voting-process One aspect that makes it so difficult to know who will win in the big categories is that everyone votes using different criteria for themselves. I remember there was some controversy last year b/c some voters after the fact said that the only reason they voted for Taylor was because they felt like they had to since she had such a big year, and not necessarily because Midnights was their best album of the year. Popularity is not always a huge factor though. Kacey Musgraves won Best Album for Golden Hour and that album was not huge nor did it get much radio play, even on country radio, and Jon Bastiste won in 2022 for an album most people hadn't heard of.

Beyonce is sending a message with all these releases, tbh. And I LOVE it. Essentially, she's saying, "Black culture is stolen in the music industry and passing as white culture" and she's right. Black artists created R&B, Hip-hop, country music was a byproduct of slave hymns, dance/edm was borne out of queer Black culture (so Renaissance exists), and I'm hoping her next album is Rock n Roll bc it happened there, too.

A couple more things, NFL only recently started having games on Christmas, typically in years past it was only the NBA. This was also the first year that Netflix had streaming rights to a game which is probably a HUGE reason Beyonce used this occasion. And yes, this was her first time performing anything from Cowboy Carter - many people actually bought tickets to the game just to see her. 😂 There was supposed to be something announced on the 14th, either a new tour or Act 3, but that has been postponed due to the LA fires.

I also feel like tortured poets falls into the category of Taylor albums that are more for the fans (like evermore). Loved the video!! Not sure I'm a fan of the new editing technique...I like the simplicity from before. I have difficulty's with everything being so fast edited and using different pop outs to get us entertained, probably because of TikTok (no hate tot TikTok) but I get too overwhelmed by it. Funny story!! I was at the Olympic closing ceremony, just accompanying my partner who was in charge of a lot of the costumes for it. So we got to watch the show from the roof! There was a moment where Tom Cruise literally walked past us (like a meter away) to take some stairs, only to come back up like 3 minutes later, probably because he needed to take a bathroom break or something 😂

The beginning of her performance in the tunnels probably was pre recorded, this is not to be a negative comment about Beyoncé but more from a logistical standpoint the tunnels of the stadium would be needed for gameday operations (especially during halftime) and also the live horses are such a variable that you would want a controlled environment for them and the opportunity to do multiple takes if one acted up!

Yes, that part in the tunnels had to all be pre-filmed. It’s obvious with the outfit flip between the tunnels and out. Definitely for logistical reasons. .. the tunnels couldn’t be like that with a game going on. You have personnel moving through them all during the game and halftime.

Love Bey in this! NFL fan here. The Christmas day performance is new actually. Netflix bought the rights to air NFL games and really put money into this half time show. I take "grieving for the living" to be about herself, grieving that she's alive and can't be with her lover. also the line about the opal eyes gives me an image of a ghost. About lip syncing: I have seen YouTube reactions by a British (?) man named Fil. He analyzes performances to determine whether and how much autotune is being used. What also happens is singers sing live (or mime) on prerecorded tracks, and their live track is pitch corrected as they’re singing. So in many cases live music performances are actually a combination of live singing and prerecorded material - a lot different than the concerts I went to when I was a younger woman.

Paul McCartney has stated that the song was written about black women during the Civil Rights movement and encouraging them to keep the faith for a better future. Beyoncé recorded her version of the song to give a similar message of empowerment to black women today. She also made the conscious choice to feature 4 black female country singers on the track to amplify their voices and provide them with a bigger platform.

Guys, i don’t know if you didn’t know or just didn’t see it but she did perform Exile with Justin. it’s very interesting because the Bejeweled music video is very exile-coded, “exile ends in 3-2-1”, and “you’ve been exiled here….”. then, when she gets off the elevator on the 3rd floor, to get bejeweled, the scene is like the exile lyric video, very exile coded scene. the day of the Bejeweled music video realease is the same day she showed up surprised the National/Justin Vernon at their concert and sang exile live.

I did. Taylor mostly sings along to tracks that have already been laid down. I remember listening to her surprise songs at one of her last (maybe her last?) Eras performances and you could hear a difference. When singing completely live her voice was tired. I was a voice major in college, and the voice is not capable of infinite singing, it has to be protected. I’d be very interested to know what is happening with the Agency, her band. I suspect they have tracks laid down as well but are they also playing along live? How I feel about it: I have the impression it might not be possible to deliver a top quality, completely live performance at a stadium, especially when you’re moving all over a huge stage. I see her stadium tours as top tier performances where she does sing live, but not as strictly live music. But I don’t give any shade for that. In a small setting I do agree with Fil that autotune should be unnecessary or less necessary. Sometimes autotune can actually detract from sound quality. He used Sabrina Carpenter as an example, saying her pitch control is so spot on she doesn’t need to have pitch correction. And I think overcorrecting vocal music can “vanilla-ize” sound quality, polishing it so well it loses its unique character. I grew up in the age of standing for an hour and a half or so to listen to bands that were performing 100% live. But they were in concert halls or outdoor arenas, before the advent of stadiums and giant screens. Today’s music in any arena has a higher quality sound than say, when I went to see Janis Joplin in a hall. 🤩 But there’s something really great about the imperfect rawness of a totally live concert. As a vocalist I have deep respect for performances that are not pitch corrected. But I also understand that Taylor wants to deliver a top tier performance in a huge stadium for thousands of people, while she is in motion all of the time. So it makes sense she would control for as much as she can, and I suspect it takes singing over prerecorded tracks to deliver that top tier experience.
