Before I watch it I must say that even though there was a line change in better than revenge, the production in the TV is unimaginably better. The way she says “THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DID” on the second verse and the general anger, mischief and cockiness on the whole song makes listening the line change worth.

the only songs that i have added the original to along with the tv version on my playlist are sparks fly, mean and better than revenge!! ofc i like the og lyric better, but her vocals on the taylor's verison are soooo superior!!! plus the echos are louder in the tv which i like better!! with mean the last chorus when those vocals come in of “why you gotta be so” in the og feel like they’re really there, but in the Taylor’s version, they feel like backing vocals and I don’t like that as much! Those vocals in the original have always been my fav part of the song

It’s red because on release it wasn’t a deluxe version it was the Target exclusive version so they had it red for Target. Became the deluxe edition when it went on streaming.

I actually feel like I don’t know if you want to call it gaslighting that Taylor did with putting the fearless cover on Taylor’s version 😂, but it honestly worked because it does sound like a fearless song to me like I think it would’ve worked if it had originally been on fearless!!

speak now is one where i’m really struggling to choose. like I love how improved her vocals are on taylor’s version but there is also emotion missing at times. and the original production has more punch to it but taylor’s version is probably better objectively. really struggling here with all the songs honestly, there’s magic to both that I wish I could combine into a perfect version somehow. so I have no list to provide for this video like I did with the previous ones, I like both🤷🏻‍♀️💜

The re-recording was a really magical time watching others fathom it like I do and especially seeing how you fathomed so much about that era Bonny. Overall, I think that Taylor was very experimental on Speak Now, and the songs are both musically and vocally more demanding than she had ever tried before. As a result, there was more room for improvement in Taylor's Version with her much stronger vocals and the better production technology. At the same time, she had a charm in her younger voice that is less present in Taylor's version. And some of the things that people might think as flaws in her younger voice, I really love. Like in the OG version of Back to December, she says, in the outro, "And I go back to Decem-BERRR" with the "BER" really pronounced. She made it more conventional on the Taylor's version, and no doubt more technically correct, but I liked the BERRR. Not that the new version is in any way bad, though. And I have to say I agree about Dear John too. I think the musical and vocal improvement is really noticeable on The Story of Us and Enchanted. The Story of Us is kind of a harsh song, sonically, and the smoothness of her voice on the TV makes it much better to me. And the music on the original version of Enchanted is a bit muddied to me, and is much better on the TV, to me. Haunted too, for me, though I can feel the appeal of her younger voice on the OG as well. But I have to go with the original on Last Kiss for the pure emotion. I was one of the ones saying, between the lines, that I thought you were being a bit disrespectful to the Taylor's versions, so I appreciate how you addressed this at the beginning, and I did think you were more even-handed in this video. You can like the OG versions better without implying or stating that the TV version is flawed, and you do that well in this video.

I have always been attached to speak now (the song) for some reason. It has such a good flow that’s fun to sing along to. But Taylor’s version just didn’t hit. Something vocally was off for me. So glad to have the original back!

As a fellow story of us Stan from back in the day and being from the US it’s crazy to hear the version you call the “original”. I was instantly like woah that verse sounds so different!! It’s so weird to me that she had these different versions with the subtle differences. Does anybody know why that was a thing?!! Your Speak Now reaction is my favourite video you guys have done, I throw it on every now and then just to rewatch parts of it or if I feel like listening to a bit of Speak Now. I love everything about it; I love getting to listen to Speak Now with you, I love the background and lighting, you guys looked beautiful and in particular it seemed like Bonny was having a big moment with Speak Now which was so lovely. Innocent is such an underrated song, its honestly one of my favorite Taylor songs. I've never related it to Kanye but actually to myself. Its very self soothing, puts things into perspective, allows you to have some grace and forgiveness for yourself, gets you out of a rut and depression by showing that your string of lights are still bright and that its never too late to change things. No other song in her discography actually touches on this theme and I wish she did it more.

The way you girls can detach John Mayer from Ours and Superman, love that for you but I just cannot and that's why those songs' lyrics give me a bit of the ick. It took hearing your opinion on Superman a couple years ago for me to realise that it wasn't about her dad- because look at the entire first third of the song! Especially "He puts papers in his briefcase and drives away to save the world or go to work- it's the same thing to me" and "I watch Superman fly away, you've got a busy day today. Go save the world, I'll be around... I'll be right here on the ground when you come back down" give big 'little girl idolising her dad going to work in the office and can't wait til he comes home at night' energy. So the juxtaposition of this with the second verse and then realising it's actually her at 19 singing about her predatory older boyfriend when it's giving HUGE power dynamic age gap vibes in just how she's thinking about the man she's singing about- that's why it's an ick for me. Same reason with Ours. The TVs of both songs help distance the songs for me from those ick power dynamics a bit

Speak now TV is my favorite re-recording!!!! I LOVED the experience of listening to it for the first time and the vaults are 100% my favorites. I feel like with innocent for me, I simply had to choose the Taylors version because all I'm thinking when I listen to that little baby voice singing that song is 'oh god she has no idea what's gonna happen here' and it kills me knowing she's trying to forgive him and doesn't know that he's about to really tear her down. So the only option in my own mind is to listen to the Taylors version where she's singing that song knowing that in the end she was the bigger person and she's the one who came out on top, knowing that the fans will always show up for her, and knowing that she tried to make amends but ultimately 'trash takes its self out every time'.

I've listening to their first album again over these last few days and damn The City, chocolate and sex have been on repeat. You guys are NOT coming across as hating on any version. I feel like the videos are rather highlighting the pros of each version and why they are all superior in different aspects and in some you have a vocal that gets you emotional and in another you have a production that tickles you. I think it’s a really nice thing to revel in it all. I think people are seriously projecting their own conflicting feelings onto you and that is not your burden to bear.

In Sparks Fly TV, there's this super autotune-y sound when she says "whenever you-ou-ouuuuu" and for that reason I could never listen to it. There are several Christopher Rowe re-records that have little glitches like that (e.g. the clicking in New Romantics that you guys mentioned, or the "I might be okay" part in ATW5 TV)

It's interesting hearing the conversation around Superman. I wasn't an OG fan, so I didn't get into listening to it really until TV came out, so my listening experience is from the perspective of a 30-something year old fan. And I always saw the lyrics as being a bit of satire with underlying anger, and the overall song as being a lesson tearing down hero worship in a relationship. Clearly going to work ISN'T as admirable as saving the world and in numerous points in the song she highlights that this man really isn't ALL that great (he's irrational, he has a bad reputation, etc.) She also points out as the song progresses that all of her 'waiting on him to come back down' isn't going to result in him loving her back. I guess the song never gave me the ick as I have viewed it through the lens of 'don't let yourself be duped by a regular guy thinking he's Superman and expecting you to act like that's the case'.

I also have a hard time choosing between the two Long Live versions for a lot of the reasons Bonny mentioned. The original version has a very "in the moment" feeling in the delivery, it's that defiant punch in the air when you're blasting this song on a summer day roadtrip with friends and the windows are rolled down. Taylor's version feels a little heavier, but not in a bad way, but rather more like a nostalgia that comes from talking about a shared experience. it's the roadtrip 5 years later, with the same friends on a similar day, but instead of driving, you've pulled over to a view spot with a snack and some "hey remember that time...?" conversation. Both are treasured moments in their own right.

love this girls & your picks💜💫 speak now will probably be the only album where i’d pick the original over taylor’s version, not because i don’t love the re-record (it’s perfect!!) but because of the nostalgia. it came out at the exact right moment in my life, i was 19, graduating high school and about to start university. i’ll never forget moving into my tiny student apartment, sitting on the floor at 2 a.m sobbing to never grow up! and even if it’s not the album i reach for the most anymore, speak now will always be the one that feels the most mine!! no other album holds that kind of time capsule magic for my life or who i was in 2010 and 2011 and for that i’m so grateful 😭😭😭

With Speak Now I feel very strongly about my choice. I don't know why, but her voice and her delivery in the OG album is so, so special to me, more than in any other album. So I couldn't bring myself to chose the TV over the OG. I mean her voice is so young, so vulnerable, so fun and snarky. The lyrics feel like they were born in that moment, not just delivered.

Ladies, in all seriousness, this type of weather is pretty normal for many of us who live in the northern hemisphere. Where i live, it’s cold/winter type weather for 9-10 months out of the year, which sucks. So if u ladies intend on moving to this part of the world, just be aware that u’d be living in this type of weather, or something similar, 24/7 for months at a time. If u ever decide to move, I’d highly suggest actually experiencing living in the winter here to see if it’s something u can actually endure.

Love these videos. So interesting - and love the differences you pick up in the songs. A few hadn’t registered to me at all. I also think this discussion ultimately proves what is so special about Taylor as a vocalist, and it’s the raw emotion that she captures. Very few artists have that IMO, so it’s actually a credit to her that it can’t always be replicated as it’s so authentic to her original experience. Only thing I disagree with is the love for the Speak Now vaults. Haha I find them to be the weakest by a country mile (well, maybe on par with Fearless - but that at least gave Mr Perfectly Fine). I rarely listen to them, they just feel so mid to me.

I didn't realise how much I missed listening to speak now the album until I was able to listen to the original again 🥹🥹I used to be SUCH a speak now girlie (was literally my second favourite taylor album) but I really struggled to connect with it after tv came out. I think she did such a good job with tv, the songs don't sound bad at all, but there is something in the original that speaks to me in a way I cant explain. I'm just so so so happy to have it back 😭😭😭😭😭

One of my favorite things about getting the originals back is really getting to reflect on why I love the OG/TV of certain songs more because of where I had been in my life, and also hearing from other people about their connections with these versions. Like I loved Bonny's Long Live rant and Emily talking about Enchanted, it's just so special how much significance these versions hold. For me, a big one is Last Kiss (Taylor's Version), because my long-term partner broke up with me a month after SNTV came out and Last Kiss was one of the songs that hit me the hardest, whereas I never had an experience attached to the original. And so I completely understand why so many people are happy to get OG Last Kiss back, but to me, Last Kiss TV was there for me when I needed it most and so I'm just very partial towards that. And on a less deep note, I'm very happy to have OG Dear John back because the way she sings 'fireworks' in TV has always irrationally bothered me so much lol.

Thank you so much once again for doing these, I feel like they are such interesting and necessary conversations to have now, as I've been struggling with it since forever and sorry for the people who don't like to discuss this but you can't please everyone. I've especially been struggling with Speak Now, I realize this all the more after watching this but it has helped me solidify some of my own opinions and I actually agree with all the ones that you guys agree on as well, which I hadn't expected. Most people seem to prefer Sparks Fly OG but I never felt that way. There are still songs for which I think I simply need to listen and fathom OG more for, this album plays mindgames with me

Their impact on the album, how they fit with the albums theme, general swag in the name 🤪. Like 1989: awesome title, love the use of a year and a number title in general. But how does it explain the theme of those particular songs? Does it? If so I would love to be educated about it and hear where you would rank it among the others ❤️.

You’re right, that’s very true too @home insulation. That’s why i think it’s important for them to actually live in our winter and experience it for themselves to see if they can handle it. Because it can get intense and uncomfortable quickly. For me personally, even though my home is insulated, it still gets cold to the point of annoyance lol. And i grew up in this type of weather 😅😭 But since the girls are used to having summer for 9-10 months out of the year, this sudden switch up might be drastic for them imo.

I love Bonny’s love for Long Live! I’ve had similar feelings of being connected to BTS as they have such an incredible bond with their fans and have multiple songs dedicated to their fanbase. Some examples are “Mikrokosmos”, “2! 3!” and “Magic Shop” in which they directly talk to their fans and say their music is a safe space (the magic shop, which is the music) that fans and themselves can go to when they find comfort in each others company. BTS has stood out from other K-POP groups as they bring up topics like mental health, life struggles, depression etc in their songs and give a sense of comfort, which is why fans are so connected. They are very grounded, came from a super small record label and have always shown gratitude towards their fans by dedicating songs to them. So Long Live is not the only song like that, and I think you’d guys like their lyrics if you knew the back story 💜

I think its completely valid whatever your opinion on the OGs vs TVs. Even if you don't want to pick--you don't have to, that's the blessing! We are so incredibly lucky and fortunate to be Swifties. I don't think any other fan base gets all the good things that we get. Emily, I completely understand your horror on If This Was A Movie not having a home. I wish she would have just put it on Fearless TV if she wasn't going to put it on Speak Now. At least then it would have a home. And I kind of wish the Hunger Game songs had been on Red TV as well, but I def don't feel as strongly about those. Bonny, I am with you on Long Live, I heard it after Red came out and I decided to go back and listen to the songs I didn't know (up till then, I only knew the singles). Its been SO SPECIAL to me ever since!

I have to be honest and say that I usually only go back to sntv for the vault tracks 😬 of course I still listen to both versions but for me it’s purely nostalgia especially since I was so young when speak now came out and I associate too much with how it sounded then to ignore what’s missing from Taylor’s version. Still love both though!

I was traveling to see family over the Fourth of July, so I’m just now watching this. I love these discussions about each re-record. Speak Now has so many great songs on it, especially HAUNTED. I love both versions so it’s a win win for me. I will say, Innocent is one of my favorite songs from this album. It’s really well written, and I love the melody. I had no idea about the lore behind this song when I first heard it, so it’s easy for me to not associate it with that big jerk. 😊

I compared my most listened to songs of each version on last.fm to see if there were any drastic changes, and there were! So between the OG and TV, the ones that I listened to more with Taylor’s Version were Better than revenge (6th to 1st), Superman (16th to 5th?!), and Ours (15th to 9th). The ones who I listened to less with Taylor’s Version are Sparks fly (1st to 6th - it just doesn’t hit the same for me) and Mean (9th to 14th). So this is a small indication of which version I prefer! However, I also really struggled with Better than revenge, because I AM attached to the original lyric, but I think the production in TV is actually perfect. Thankfully I can listen to both now 😌

Might be off topic slightly but can I just say that Aaron Dessner did a ridiculously amazing job at replicating the sound of each album in the Instruments and production on the vault tracks! Fearless vaults sound just like Fearless and the same with Speak Now and Red. He can just blend into any genre or vibe or style and NAIL it!

Speak Now is absolutely My Album™, truly a contender for my favorite album of all time, and I honestly bear no shame in saying that I never stopped listening to the OG version of this. TV was in the mix, of course, but I was never going to let the OG go no matter what because those songs are entwined into the very nature of my soul in a way that very few things are. Because of this, I barely have any of the SNTV songs on my main Taylor discog playlist. The only exceptions are Better Than Revenge (lyric change plus I actually genuinely LOVE the sharper drums and amplified adlibs in the rerecord), Last Kiss (something about the TV coming out during joever era made me fathom the song in a new way and now I love both versions to death), Innocent (my beloved 💜 iykyk) and Superman (her updated vocals are chefs kiss on this one). And even with these, I don't swap out any of the OG's, I just keep both because I need all of them all the time sdfsdfds

Listening to the original Speak Now for the first time in years was so fascinating for some reason. I can see why I always thought it was a country album because the country instruments seem more pronounced to me. But the one thing that stood out to me was that I can’t stand the way Taylor pronounces her “L’s”. I don’t know what my problem is (and it’s DEFINITELY a ME problem)! It reminds me of when people are chewing and making mouth noises and it sends me into an irrational rage! For example, I notice it in Mean when she says “humiliation” and for some reason it intensely bothers me. It happens a lot throughout Speak Now OG. You can hear it more with headphones and she doesn’t do it at all on Taylor’s Version. I apologize to Taylor for being “mean”!

Thank you, Bonny so so much for putting into words what I feel about Long Live. You said it perfectly when you described the bond between you and Taylor that was formed because of this song. It’s mirrorball before mirrorball, which is a song that makes me absolutely sob every time. Those are always the songs that I am drawn to because, you’re exactly right, she understands what I personally feel about her and she sees me and GETS it. There’s nothing more comforting than when Taylor tells you that she’s not going anywhere and that we mean as much to her as she does to us. I could talk about this for days. Long Live is also why we all love her band and singers so much because she makes sure that they are all seen and celebrated as well. I actually CANNOT handle how much I love her!

Me! It was me! I thought Superman was about Scott! However, I was not fully paying attention to every lyric. The reason I thought this was because the concept of Superman is so childlike about how a child would look up to their father as a superhero. Now that I know it’s about, allegedly, John Mayer, it’s so much more obvious how inappropriate that relationship was. Very late to the party but finally got to watch this video at 11pm at night. Bonnie completely captured my relationship with Long Live and I was lucky enough to be almost next to her in London when she played it on the piano mashed up with Change. Here’s my question I don’t think anyone has asked or answered. Why then did it get cut from the eras tour and not put in the movie (except it plays at the end?). So many seem to have this connection with this song and so does Taylor. Anyone fathom why that would be? What am I missing?

I have to be in a certain mood/head space to listen to it - the sounds are just too much for my adhd brain sometimes that’s already SO noisy. i was listening to both versions of last kiss yesterday in honor of july 9th and other than the shaky breathe i don't think she sounds any more sad in the og! that song is sad in every way! i understand that people have an attachment to the shaky breathe and the fact that her feelings are so fresh in the og, but when you're just listening to it, i don't think they're that different! which is why i prefer the taylor's version cuz her voice is better

This is so interesting! I have only ever heard the “US” version of The Story of Us that you all played and no other one. Speak now is a Stan album for me and it holds a really special place in my heart. So, I have picked the original for every song except for Never Grow Up and Innocent. I am deeply obsessed with Haunted the original version and when TV came out, it actually went down quite a few spots on my favorites list. I’m so thankful to have it back 😭

i think it´s so funny how personal some ranking-choices are. i would pick Mean TV over the OG version because it was my surprise song and she paired it with thanK you aImEe. that to me is so special because the song is really petty (and i love it) and she took it into a more recent era and experience with that mashup. unfortunately, people just are mean no matter what age (or era). and to feel the weight of Mean but also the coming to terms with those experiences as she does in thank you aimee is just like a grown up version of it

I must say girls im sooo shocked to hear you prefer sparks fly TV!!! I think it is wayy too different from the original, and I do think it sounds emptier. Also a rare case where i think the original has a better vocal performance than TV, and the instrumental is so good and layered!! Its a top 3 taylor song for me so maybe thats why im so hard on it, but I truly think the original is a much better song
