I completely agree with the point that you made about the connection to Taylor and I’ve thought about it too… the reason it doesn’t feel like just copying is because their creative process and the final product of art is soooo vastly different (as you said)… she’s just learning strategy and marketing tbh, and it’s not hard to guess that she fell in love with Taylor because of the relationship she tries to have with her fans so she wants the same for herself and her audience

Your outfits!! Adorable! This album is so interesting in the sense that you can tell shes build on the SNS era, and gotten more confident overall in her craft. Also the album is such grower!! Everytime I listen front to back, a different song gets highlighted for me!

I wanted to add a bit onto the Sabrina controlling her career discussion, and I definitely think she basically holds all the power. She left her previous label over a very clear power struggle, and now she talks about how happy she is that Island gives her the freedom to explore herself creatively. And as you said, you can see it in everything she does. It is all so her. And even the way others talk about her, too. So many of the people who work with her, from guest stars in her videos to her band to tour openers all give bits of BTS that show Sabrina picked them

So much to say about this album! 1. Did you hear in "Goodbye". she says near the end "Go put on some clothes" which is what Taylor said to her on the phone in New Orleans before she came out and they did Espresso together??? 2. This is the most Jack Antonoffy Jack Antonoff-produced album ever. He is pulling out all the stops! I know some people find Jack annoying, but I love this production! 3. I think this album is the story of the end of her relationship with Barry, and that is why she and Jack both said that we should listen to this album in order. 4. I think she had to write this album, in the same way Taylor had to write TTPD. She was working out her feelings about Barry being so obsessed with her, then cooling on her and finally dumping her. 5. You caught that Larry rhymes with Barry and villain rhymes with Dylan, but also John rhymes with Shawn! 6. I know that Sabrina is so sexy and funny, but I think there is real heartbreak in this album, and it breaks my heart that Barry would gaslight her so badly, convincing her he loved her then dumping her. There is a lot of hate online and misunderstanding of this album, and it really annoys me. This album is fucking great and it is my album of the year. I think people will come around on repeated listening.

Have you girlies fathomed the narrative of the tracklist? I've heard her say a few times that the track order was really important to her on this... I think sonically but also narratively. Starts with the overview in Manchild, goes through the phases of the relationship breaking down, breaking up, trying to rebound, being sad and getting drunk about it, big rebound with House Tour, and then trying (and partially succeeding) in closing the chapter with the og man in Goodbye.

Quick comment on the mixed critical reaction to this album: Drake (who I generally hate) said the other day that critics decide what their reaction will be before actually hearing the album, and I absolutely agree with him. So the shallower critics saw that this album was coming so soon after Short and Sweet and decided it must be a cash grab and would just be a poor knockoff of SnS, and so they wrote some version of this in their reviews. To their credit, Pitchfork (which I also generally hate) actually listened to the album and was positive (surprisingly, given their usual misogyny).

I don’t really feel like Sabrina is a “TayDaughter” if anybody is. We know Sabrina has looked up to Taylor as a young girl and she is totally picking up some of the Taylor Swift strategies in marketing or selling but so is everyone else in the industry because Taylor Swift has shaped it for so many people. Before Sabrina opened for Taylor Swift she opened for Ariana Granda Dangerous Woman. You could also say she’s a daughter of Ariana Grande in the sexy lyrics and vocals and signature hair. I like to think Sabrina is picking up all the little things she’s learned along the way from all her icons, just like any individual.

First time watching the Tears video — given the sonic landscape of the album, this could also very directly be pulling from the Thriller video. I also loved this discussion at the end! TS has mentored so many new female artists and Sabrina feels like the first one with enough experience and a clear vision of her artistry to really take advantage of the whole playbook Taylor has to offer. It’s lovely to see, because she is so different as an artist, but is still seeing success with these strategies.

My fave songs initially are Sugar Talking and We Almost Broke Up Last Night. I'm not as well versed in the Sabrina lore but the Swiftie in me feels like there are plenty of easter eggs in this video, especially on the piano (there were many in the Manchild video that tie into lyrics on the album - TikTok helped me pick up on all of these).
