I have a parasocial shift with Clean. The first time ever this song touched me and did something incredible with my inner world was on Reputation tour, after Taylor's speech about harassment and the fact that people believed her. Because of my personal horrible experience…. But what's happening in 2025 has completely dissolved that magic and I feel not good. Dudes in new Taylor`s circle now are Leven Compton was accused of intimidating r*pe v*ctims, which he confessed to police: he told his friend's girlfriend that if she went to the police and reported the r*pe, he would r*pe her himself. Tylor later shared that the Leven and his bro Willa podcast is one of her favorites, and she adores their sense of humor. Dave Portnoy send a note to Taylor: "Happy you came to my show today! Thank you for your support and loyalty, and for standing by my side when so many turned their backs on me." He has been accused of three separate s*xual assaults with different women. Patrick Mahomes' brother. I also had a moment with change in high school as a competitive dancer and it was my anthem and a major inspiration song for me, so I felt so seen reading your comment! I cannot explain what this song does to me, but one day it just sparked and it hasn't gone away EVER since. the reference to the war - I'm a sucker for history and exploration of other decades and centuries. the ambiance NOOOO the production is sending me into the most peaceful, nostalgic, other world that I escape to when I HATE IT HERE. Both songs have their strengths (Bolter lyrics vs Clean production/arrangement). However, whenever Clean comes on unexpectedly, I never ever skip it - I can’t say the same with Bolter.

What a peculiar collection of tracks 13's are. Considering the importance of the number, I can't say there are many real standout tracks for me here, and it shows in my ranking cause I think I agree with Bonhilda that it doesn't make it easier, unusual for me to not have the later albums all at the top. Bonny, you actually look very lovely today, I hope you feel better soon! I don't know about all that regarding Change. I think it's pretty obvious what the vibe is and in an album closer called "Fearless", contains the line "we're faster and never scared". I think this is a much better song than you made out. Last Kiss and Lover both have that classic sound because they are both in a 6/8 time signature! I do actually agree with Bonny that Clean is overrated but it is obviously still a good song. Let us not forget that she mashed up TIWWCHNT and My Boy at the eras tour haha, iconic. Agreed on ICDIWABH, I think it's surprisingly throwaway for Taylor, it feels very quickly just thrown together and put out because she wanted a pop song on TTPD.

Here to say I'm happy to hear Bonny say Clean is a bit overrated. The only time it really clicked for me was when 1989 originally came out and I went through a breakup😂but since then, I've struggled with it. It's not a bad song by any means, but I don't really understand why it's considered an absolute, untouchable masterpiece. It leaves me wanting more. That said, I do feel like it touches on a feeling that can be applied to many situations, so I understand in that sense why it's popular. I will add that the added drums and build in Clean TV hooked me a little. Controversial, but I'd choose TV over the OG.

Really I think you are too harsh in Invisible and Change. I might also rank them in the two last spots, but they are both good and they are both Taylor being in experimental mode. They don't sound like anything else she has done. I think you are responding to the combination of the pedal steel and Taylor's girly voice in interpreting Invisible as whiny. If she rerecords it, I don't think it will sound whiny to you. And Change is a full-bore rock song--maybe the closest thing to it is Eyes Open. Last Kiss is a brilliant tour de force of songwriting, but sometimes hard to listen to. Actually, looking at this whole list it feels like she uses track 13 for experimentation. False God and epiphany definitely, and marjorie and ICDIWABH too. How I feel about Epiphany is: I started crying as soon as you started talking about it 😂 For me it channels our common humanity, our ability to metabolize and transcend suffering to touch something beautiful when we are together. I’m with you Bonny, I don’t like Change. Apparently my 7 year old daughter (she’s autistic) doesn’t either. Every time I play the og version of Change she bursts out in tears and has a complete meltdown. It is too overstimulating for her and the og version even more than the TV. So it has now become a member of a small list of do not play songs in our house. The only other song of Taylor’s that does that causes that reaction in my daughter is The Black Dog.

Does anyone like change? I have a very deep love for it. I was 13 when I first heard it and grew up in a pretty abusive household… it spoke to me… “these things will change, can you feel it now?” “They might be bigger, but we are faster and never scared.” it still makes me emotional. Bonnie I'm fully in your camp when it comes to Clean being overrated. For me the biggest drawback is its unoriginality, as the metaphor of addiction/sobriety as it relates to a relationship is not a novel one (heck, Taylor herself wrote about it three albums prior with You All Over Me). There are some stunning lyrics to be found in Clean, yes, but they're not enough for me to rank it in first place. I'd probably put it below Last Kiss. I'd argue that a thematically-similar song to Clean that executes its message in a more unique and creative way is the previous album closer, Begin Again.

I think Clean is the strongest metaphor in her entire discography—maybe I’m too scared of drowning lol, but the image of being inside a flooding room after punching through the roof and the intensity of that situation actually not leading to death but instead being about your own salvation of yourself…??? Like, you really had to be willing to fully feel and be consumed by pain to overcome it—which would already be offensive but the execution/production just nails the high stakes and catharsis. Like, she really didn’t hide it, it was right in front of us😳💗 Also, Halsey has a similar song comparing her lover to religion. It’s called Coming Down and it’s from her debut album Badlands. She says she found a Devil, savior, God and martyr in this lover. It’s also a really sexy song and I’ve been listening to it a lot recently since Badlands just turned 10 years old and it’s an album that really has stood the test of time. I honestly wouldn’t mind if y’all continue to omit the life of a showgirl tracks from these track rankings until you’re done just because the album will be so fresh and exciting that you may feel the need to rank it higher but with time that could fade. Change (the song) has become so much more meaningful as the years go by. Like, it started as a song about her and her record label and her band which was really sweet. THEN when she was forced to re-record it, it took on a whole new meaning because she was making the “change” for herself by taking her power back. NOW it hits different yet again because she owns her life’s work. And I sing HALLELUJAH to all of those situations and she just keeps winning!
