Lily my daughter and I have a strong bond and we have gone to every concert that has come to Kansas City since Speak Now. We listen to the whole album without stopping or saying anything and when it finished we got ourselves a drink and than listen to the album a second time and were dancing the second time. I believe the negative comments are people who had already decided what they wanted the album to be and when it wasn't what they were expecting they just got mad.

I have had a similar feeling to yours since seeing some responses to the album. Many fans seem to hold Taylor to an impossible standard. It’s pop but not the lyrics they wanted. It’s concise but not enough good songs. Everyone is a Goldilocks. But also, everyone listened. A record breaking number. If people don’t like something, they simply aren’t required to listen. This rollout has shown that people aren’t treating their energy as expensive.

We could see this a bit with TTPD's release which is that people HATE when Taylor is funny. She got shit on in that album for being too poetic and too wordy but they were also picking out lyrics from songs that were meant to be sarcastic and funny and being like, "THIS is your songwriter of a generation???" So I expected they'd react the same to a whole album where she's being funny because they act like that's illegal for her to do. But it doesn't matter to me, I was forged in the fires of 2016, no amount of bots and hate trains will stop me lol I LOVE this album and I loved this vlog!! I think herd mentality and group think are to blame for the album not being very 'popular' (saying that with a pinch of salt because a lot of people also love it and the loudest voices are often the haters). Which is the big trap we fall into with this social media age. I'm sure there are loads of people who listened to the album once, were letting it cook, maybe didn't have hugely strong opinions either way yet, but then went online and immediately saw people dragging it and probably thought 'oh no, now I feel I have to hate it as well because that's what everyone else is saying' and all of a sudden we're back to the age old 'liking Taylor Swift isn't cool' thing again, which is so tired. Taylor said herself on her ZL interview that if you're saying her name or her album's name - good or bad - the week it comes out then you're helping with sales, attention, traction, etc. I also think social media platforms these days automatically show you hate comments first to try to get you to engage, spend longer on their platforms etc. It's never been like this before, really, and I think the social media algorithms have a huge hand in it. Oh well, fastest selling album ever ❤️‍🔥🤪

I feel like Eldest Daughter is kind of the definitive song for this record as a reflection of where she's at right now. It's the one I've seen people use the most to point out how the songwriting on here is worse than usual but a lot of them seem to be missing the core point of what it's getting at. It's about her shedding the need to try and be cool and to embrace her more authentic self even if people are going to criticise her for being "goofy" or "cringe" because she feels so comfortable in her own happiness. I think the dissonance between the language she uses and the way it's delivered over the somber piano is intentional and meaningful. It makes perfect sense as a track 5 and seems like the most emotionally vulnerable track on the album to me. The whole album is probably the most comfortable and free version of Taylor we've ever gotten, there's way less anxiety and sadness here than usual, which naturally leads to a less serious set of songs. She seems happy to just write about her own joy in whatever way feels good to her, without worrying about how it's going to be perceived. A lot of that seems to be with a sense of humour that not everyone appreciates but is very much the same Taylor we've always known.
