Omg ok so. Since we are bringing it up again. I have a Sandlot theory. So The Sandlot is a fantastic millenial treasure of a film. (We all had a crush on Benny.) And she also references Field of Dreams - another film ytreasure of millenial youth, as well as “Close Encounters” (of the Third Kind). I think she is purposely referencing films in TTPD - things she perhaps watched with someone, so that person will know without any doubt that it’s about them. I think most of the words she uses when trying to create the song are just rhyming placeholders and not lyrics that she intends to keep in the song, they just have a rhyming scheme that helps the flow

The Ruin the Friendship synthy organ did make it! It is so faint in the background of the mix but it's there and I really think it's what gives the final mix that summery shimmery disco ball sound. They just ended up layering an entire band over top of it so you don't hear it as much as you do in the demo.

I was listening to the Albatross earlier and was struck by how she says "locked me up in towers but I'd visit in your dreams." I'm not sure if she's referring to men more generally trying to bring her down/hold her back or if she's referring to being locked away when she was with Joe, but it feels like she's now referring to that here in the Fate of Ophelia... even more so because she's singing "I spent years in my tower"!!

i’m so glad you’ve fathomed that ruin the friendship has come from re recording debut i really think quite a few songs on recent albums have been inspired by returning to those first few albums. tons of referring back to high school weaved throughout her discography. and also ruin the friendship leads us perfectly into debut (which we all think is being re released next year)

For 'Ruin the Friendship,' I think rerecording Debut could definitely be part of it, but I also think that the experience of having never risked something she maybe should have taught her a lesson she has used throughout her career - the ability to be willing to take a risk. This time she also used it in her personal life. It's not at all obvious that she should have responded to Travis's shooting his shot heard around the world, but she did and it's made all the difference for her. She now wants to share that lesson with others on this album that's full of love she's found from taking that risk.

Just wanted bring attention to that first verse of showgirl, you guys said that other than "made her first milli" the lyrics of the verse were the same but there actually was a lot of other stuff in there! She's mumbling a bit but what I could get out was "She made her first milli By being pretty and witty Got the keys to this city And then they all said she didn't do it legitly You're young, so you don't know The keys, the price, and the hole, they push you in it Push the dirt up over your skin and bones" Which is so interesting because it's really going into "the more you play the more that you pay" and a darker energy. Also I wanted to say, I think another part of the Lana vibe, is that Lana often uses a lot of syllables in a line, almost more than fit. And some of what Taylor sings in the voice memo of life of a showgirl is the same line as the final but with added words like "then they said she didn't do it legitly" in the demo is "and then they all said she didn't do it legitly". Adding in those extra words I feel like is a staple of Lana's style! 🧡 I love to hear it! Thank you guys for giving a space for a positive and fun album release!

Ok honestly, the "you were just honing your powers" line has always bothered me, and when she said "my powers", it made so much more sense. "honing my powers now I can see it all" makes sense as a complete idea. Saying he was honing his powers never made sense to me because it has no other connection to the line or the context. I'm glad she changed the lyric in Honey but that song still sounds laboured to me and this memo explains a lot, it seems like they didn't know what to do with it and Taylor was being a bit half baked with this one. I agree with the others that it was a confusing way to make the song. Intent can't save everything. Some of Eldest Daughter is beautiful but bombarding the song with millennial colloquialisms, even if it's "the whole point", it doesn't make it good or poignant, it only makes it sound clunky and breaks immersion. People so love to use "it's intentional" as some kind of get out of jail free card as if it instantly makes it ok

Terribly sorry to bring up Matty Healy in this era but I do think ruin the friendship might be heavily inspired by those events. She did ruin the friendship with him, found out he wasn’t it and moved on. Now imagine if she never took that shot and still wondered what might’ve been? In hindsight I think she’s happy she got an answer to the question and doesn’t have to wonder anymore. Re: the album title discussion, you guys actually have it flipped! Taylor had already written maybe like half of 1989 before she came up with the title, and she had the title/concept for reputation before she went into the studio and started making the album. I can't remember where she said this but during the reputation era she specifically said reputation was different than all her past albums in that way, because she had the title and was crafting the album around that concept which she had never done before! This is why she just drops the word "reputation" a few times throughout the album, that was her weaving it into the lyrics.

I'm going to preach what I've been preaching for over a year. The three components of songwriting are lyrics, melody, and chord structure. Max, Jack, Aaron, etc don't have to contribute any lyrics at all to get songwriting credits. This also means that when a song is self-written, Taylor came up with all the melodies and chord progressions as well. Instrumentation and all the stuff you do on top of the core of the song is what's considered production. Anyway, I loved this reaction. I hope you enjoy your time off. re the black dog!!: every time I hear “I had a bad habit, of missing lovers past” I think of old habits die screaming & Taylor saying no one gets what that song is about. & I think my small brain just fathomed something - the song structure of the black dog is basically in 3 sections (1; verse, chorus, 2; verse, chorus, 3; bridge chorus) that repeat a similar theme of discussing a relationship but in a timeline manner of her moving through each one and each section ends with “old habits die screaming”. What if each section is her going back/wanting to go back to this person (Matty Healy) at different stages throughout her life, kind of like at the end of every relationship she has she thinks of Matty and tries to start something with him and the black dog is a metaphor for him moving on with a different girl after promising her the world (I watched as you walked into some bar called the black dog - i.e. I watched as you met some new girl (its giving I look in peoples windows)). She knows it will happen but every time a relationship ends she goes back to him anyway which is the old/bad habit. Also some other fathomings about the song: I think when she repeats you forgot to turn it off at the end of verse 1 “and pierced new holes in my heart, you forgot to turn it off” she’s saying he didn’t properly end things with her bc he just ghosted her, rather than referring to the location! “six weeks of breathing clean air, I still miss the smoke” - she’s finally out of her long term relationship and she still misses Matty/is thinking about the chaos of him. “were you making fun of me with some esoteric joke” - Matty has started flirting with her & getting her attention again “now i want to sell my house and set fire to all my clothes” - she wants to give up everything and just say fuck yes to this relationship “and hire a priest to exercise my demons” - because he continues to haunt her and she knows its bad but will do it anyway “even if i die screaming, and i hope you hear it” - i don’t care if everyone knows i need you to know how i feel & the last verse is him doing it again for the last time, and the last line is her not believing she fell for it for the 4th (or however many) time.

She did say that, but she'd already written most of the album at that point! By the 2014 Grammys, we have confirmation that Taylor had already written This Love, AYHTDWS, HYGTG, IWYW, OOTW, Say Don't Go, You Are in Love, I Know Places, and Welcome to New York, and likely a few others, though we don't know those for sure. What she meant by that was that she decided she was going to go for it and embrace the pop direction she'd been heading in instead of trying to appease her label, she decided on the title, and the project crystalized for her. I feel like I'm the only one on the planet that interprets Eldest daughter not only as a song about her and travis, but a large part is her speaking to her family. She is telling them she will always be there for them. She feels the weight of that on her shoulders. Even though she's gotten famous and now getting married, she's still always going to be there for her parents and brother. Her parents never put that on Taylor, or asked for money. Taylor took that upon herself to want to always take care of them and employ them. She calls it eldest daughter syndrome. My husband is the eldest and feels the same way.
