The dive makes so much sense to me because like, "slow motion, love potion, jumping off things in the ocean," and also the fact that Midnights is basically an entire album of her "drowning" in confusion and contemplation about how she can balance her work and career alongside love and relationships, and her climbing up out of the water and into the clouds for the Midnights set represents her ultimately climbing out of that confusion and claiming her place on the stage. Midnights as a whole is a very intriguing set worth analyzing deeper; you could even trace this arc of confusion and self-actualization through her costuming too by interpreting the overshirt outfit to represent the confusion arc (Lavender Haze, Anti Hero, Midnight Rain) and the bodysuit transition to be her accepting her love of her craft and choosing that passion above all else (Vigilante Shit, Bejeweled, Mastermind, Karma).

I think she get out of the stadium right after the show because of safety issues. Yes that’s right It’s sad but also think about the first episode with the families of the victimes of the massacre in the UK, the parents are the one coming to see Taylor in the stadium backstage. It’s not Taylor going to see them in their house or on a random place or whatever. I think it’s all because of safety reasons. Cause I think everything is on a military safety level. Like, if you thing about the NFL where she had to walk behind a bullet proof wall. Well that’s fucked up. So I think you’re right it’s about safety that she gets out of there ASAP. And also it makes me think that’s also the reason why there’s no meeting fans after the show anymore.

The water leading into Midnights makes me think of her mindset in her actual life during the Midnights era (which she only revealed once we got to TTPD). She was in a horrible place, right? She was drowning in the Blue Nile, considering whether to throw her life to the ocean rocks. And that was all in her mind as she is lying in bed at midnight, and then she gets out of bed and climbs up into the lavender haze.

Perfect timing, as always lol I too was driving a lot this weekend, and I put on Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)…I’m sorry, but those vault tracks just slap. I was like: birthing and raising a star must be the epitome of like, the proudest you could ever be. “I made that!!” I do not think at all that I would be: oh no, why wasn’t I talented or whatever. Just at the part where you’re confused by the water and diving before midnights and doesn’t see it as a water album. But I have a suggestion on how it could actually make sense. She does refer to a wave several times in regards to subjects explored both on Midnights and TTPD. Here are some excerpts from the midnights prologue and TTPD epilogue poem. From Midnights prologue: ”Why can't you sleep? Maybe you lie awake in the aftershock of falling headlong into a connection that feels like some surreal cataclysmic event. … A lavender haze crush THAT FEELS LIKE THE CRASH OF A WAVE.” From TTPD poem: ”And so I was out of the oven And into the microwave. Out of the slammer and INTO A TIDAL WAVE.” And she dives into the water, which we see on the screen turns out to be a wave that eventually crashes down on the main screen. Midnights is maybe when she really dove into the water or tested the water so to speak more seriously in her mind with a new crush, a new bond fulfilling her and occupying her mind outside of her long term relationship. And she starts the Midnights set with lavender haze after diving into that wave and swimming, and then climbing out of bed up into a lavender cloud in the sky, don’t tell me that doesn’t sound so much like the line from the midnights prologue ”a lavender haze crush that feels like the crash of a wave”. Also some things she’s said on ttpd when reflecting back on how the end of that relationship was like (and the period around when she wrote Midnights) we have ”drowning in the blue Nile”, we have ”you say I abandoned the ship but I was going down with it”. There’s a lot of imagery of her being under water/drowning during that period of her life. So the visuals of her swimming under water and the wave and diving could be ambiguous and fits with both the crush feeling like a wave crash during the period she was under water drowning. Oh and also think back to gold rush where she says ”so inviting I ALMOST jump in”, well.. by Midnights she’s jumping in (on stage literally), and by TTPD the relationship has already played out and burned out. So I think it could work from a bunch of different angles actually, or does this sound far fetched? Just thought I’d share since it’s how I’ve been thinking about it in trying to fathom the visuals a bit. But hey, as we’ve seen before, maybe they just thought it was cool with the water and the dive and that’s it really haha😂

Guys the wave wasn't the start of the Midnights Era it was the end of the acoustic section! The start of midnights was her literally climbing into the night sky (on top of that lavender cloud). If you go back and watch the surprise songs at the start of the tour, the piano has water rippling away from it. But there must've been some issues with those graphics because they stopped using it. You could still question why she chose to use the water during the surprise songs but personally I believe it's based on the cardigan music video where she clings to the piano (and thus all her music) as a life raft

Thanks for giving us this in the middle of your holidays! The thing that is going to stick with me, I think, is Taylor thinking Austin was just being supportive, when in fact he was speaking the absolute truth. It seemed like a moment where Taylor was feeling bad for letting her professionalism slip--and she has incredible professionalism, or she could never in a million years perform a song like marjorie or The Best Day without breaking down. But the fans and even her own family want to see the emotion every once in a while, as it deepens the connection. I hope Taylor does see that.

Back when Taylor was dating Connor Kennedy, she was accused of copying 'the Kennedy style' of clothing and trying too hard too fit in... However, consider that Marjorie left all of her clothing and costumes to Taylor when Taylor was 13.. consider that by the time Conner Kennedy rolled around, that Taylor was finally physically mature enough to wear Marjorie's dresses and clothing. And now we see why: Taylor IS Marjorie in face, build and stature.. except blonde vs Marjorie's brunette.

"Taylor doesn't like to swim for all we know - what does diving and water/waves have to do with Taylor's lore and storytelling?" I feel like in folklore and evermore there were a lot of water references and so her diving into the water and being washed up by the waves cements the idea in my mind that Midnights is a breakup album. "Leaving like a father, running like water" - Cardigan "I'm like the water when your ship rolled in that night" - Willow "Eyes like sinking ships on waters (so inviting, I almost *jumped in*)" - Gold Rush "The battleships will sink beneath the waves" - My Tears Ricochet "If your cascade, ocean-wave blues come" Peace "In heart-stopping waves of hurt" - The Lakes "My waves meet your shore" - Long Story Short "Pacing the rocks staring out at the midnight sea" - Last Great American Dynasty "Reaching out across the sea that you put between you and me" - Closure So she dived into the water because it was inviting but it turned out to be rocky, all of which culminates in her washing up on the shore and there's snow on the beach. You look back on that song in hindsight and it feels a lot like Tolerate It. She's trying to see the beauty in it but it's sad, it's cold, it's empty, it's distant.

From what I understand the surprise song set used to have ripples around the piano and guitar when they played. And Taylor also uses the acoustic set often to reference debut. So I always to it as a debut/surprise song transition to midnights. Therefore i think it connects to teardrops on her guitar

Not to be morbid, but I almost feel like Taylor gets into the car after the shows by herself most of the time as a security thing. Like that way if the car were to be targeted in any way because she’s in it, she doesn’t have to worry about anything happening to her family “because of her.” Almost like how the attacks in Europe happened/almost happened “because of her” and we could see how much that really rocked her.

Actually sooo interesting hearing your "Us" thoughts haha because I had a really big moment with "Us" and "Risk" and "That's So True", and I think specifically because, to me, they felt more like spontaneous rambly lyrics to a guitar stream-of-consciousness songs and I love that vibe. Totally feel you on them not being like an "All Too Well" or maybe feeling not as fully produced though, for me they feel like acoustic and fluttery (well aware that's not a great descriptive word lol) but I just love the airy dreamy but strummy feeling they give from a more acoustic perspective. They give me a more like... "other side of the door" is literally the only thing I can think of right now that feels anything like it from Taylor's discography.

my biggest takeaway from this episode was the realization that her emotionally healthy relationship with her parents is probably what allows her to articulate her feelings so clearly in her songs, and also what enables her to move on from heartbreak relatively easily (compared to other people). it's also what makes her "boring barbie" to haters. people with healthy relationships with their parents are rarely super edgy cause... they don't have to be.

I’m old enough now that when I look at friends, at my four siblings - other people my age - I sometimes do think both about how lucky I’ve been, because there haven’t been untimely deaths in my family or close friend circles, and also I think about how time moves on inexorably. Unless I die first I will lose siblings, my husband. It’s actually impossible to process. So I don’t! But I always think about my grandparents and parents when I hear the song.

I have been listening to Celine Dion’s French albums (because I’m Canadian and it’s just ingrained into my DNA 👍🏼) but she’s a different artist on her French albums. She’s more singer/songwriter folk rock vibes and she’s less “show offy” with her vocals so she’s not overwhelming. I remember that I used her lyrics to learn French growing up and I thought I would recommend that you try it if you’re interested. And the music is actually really great as well. I am seeing some comments regarding their “negativity” in this video. While I understand as I think this is a safe space from everyone to avoid Taylor hate I also think they deserve to have their own opinions. They are true fans not just cult members. For me, it’s less about hearing other opinions (even if they’re criticism) and more about it feeling really negative toward the other people highlighted in this episode. It felt all negative toward Gracie (when Taylor co-wrote Us and chose for Gracie to go on stage with her) and toward Ethan for the transition idea (when obviously Taylor has the final say with all that stuff). That time Taylor cried during her speech is one of the small shocking moments to me that I love. That's a good point--I forgot that early on in the tour, there were stage animations during the piano song that made it look like she was playing it on water! Not sure exactly when/why they got rid of that (though it was seemingly pretty early on in the first US leg), but that also ties well to her jumping into the stage and having water lead us in to Midnights. Also just a fun thing worth nothing, we used to go straight from Bad Blood into surprise songs into Midnights, so with that pattern in mind, it seems like it could've also been a nice elemental transition: fire from Bad Blood to water in Lavender Haze.

Us has never been my favorite song but I do like it and I really did like the mashup with Gracie. I totally understand fans in those last few shows really preferring just Taylor in the surprise song section but I also understand from Taylor perspective having this person she really enjoys performing with and wanting to share those moments with. It is Taylor’s tour to do what she wants ultimately. I love that this series was about the Eras tour and not solely about Taylor and loved learning about others involved throughout the entire series. I think this being a documentary not just about Taylor is why maybe Andrea only really has done a sit down, like she was the representative for the family perspective and if Taylor, Andrea, Scott and Austin all did sit downs they felt would be to much. I always loved the water imagery, many of the transitions draw from nature which I found very calming. Plus, the acoustic set always felt like a separate part of the show, blending the eras, so it was like being washed into the final era. Growing up near the beach, the ocean always connected me to the sky (snow on the beach), so that was the connection to Midnights for me!

I love the dive/wave effect and I think it works super well where it is in the show! The thing about that part is it needs to fit with literally every single era and transition smoothly into Midnights. So basically, whatever happened in the surprise songs (which could be anything - a special guest, an album announcement, a song being performed live for the first time ever), we get washed clean of that by the wave, and we transition home by swimming to the main stage, as a symbolic return to the main flow of the show. If that transition had incorporated a piece of lore, it might not have fit well coming out of every surprise song set, imo.

I have some close work friends who used to not know much about Taylor (despite my efforts). In March 2023 when the Eras tour started one day at lunch one of them said, “I heard Taylor Swift dives into the stage” which led to them looking up videos of it. I always related the dive to the cardigan music video. Even though that is folklore era so it does correlate all the way, I just always loved tying the imagery of her clinging to that piano for dear life to her singing the surprise songs, the only part of the show where it is ALL about her, the music, and the fans, stirped down to the bare bones and just being there together.

I don’t know enough of Gracie’s lore to analyse the lyrics of “Us” from her point of view but I found I connected more with this song when I viewed it through a Taylor/TTPD lens. There are a few things I see as allusions to the Matty Healy relationship, being something she saw as fate that just turned out to be nothing: “and what seemed like fate becomes what the hell was I doing”; the bridge alludes to the person she’s talking about being a tortured poet figure that isn’t actually reading the poetry; “mistaken for strangers”, many people were confused when they first got together as they didn’t realise they had a history and “Babylon lovers hanging lifetimes on a vine > cowboy like me. Of course, the lyrics are most likely a blend of scenarios both Taylor and Gracie experienced but I couldn’t help but notice these connections!

Personally when I watch something like Eras Tour I keep in mind what she is doing both emotionally and logistically. The Dive isn't just random, they had to get her quickly from one side of the stage to the other and created some level of visual interest, she wanted something out of the ordinary and yk what went viral DAY 1 "Taylor Swift is swimming under the stage of the Eras Tour" it got people from outside to look, it's not super tied to her lore (although OOTW, Clean, even some of midnights do have some of it in there we see the fish swimming in space and we could see the album as her drowning in these sleepless nights trying to make choice stay or go) but it is interesting and not predictable or really ever seen before. As for the red set I do understand why people wanted other songs BUT she is also trying to bridge generations here 22 feels like ok this one IS for the kids a good moment for the hat they feel seem it's easy they know it well they won't sing along to treacherous, and it reminder me of how at first people reached terribly to Marjorie on the setlist because it was "boring" (not me tho I was a grandpa's girl) and I really believe that it was 1 obviously really important to Taylor to have it in there and 2 the more people heard ir the more they understood and it increased the love for the song.

Someone has already mentioned a little bit of this already but I think yall might be forgetting some key imagery within Midnights that makes total sense for the stage dive into the Midnights transition. 1. Midnight Rain - My boy was a montage, a slow motion love potion Jumping off things in the OCEAN. This is probably the most obvious one. She performs Midnight rain and before Midnights, she literally jumps OFF the stage, into the ocean. 2. Midnights Prologue - A lavender haze crush that feels like a CRASH of a wave 3. Midnights Prologue - All the ghost ships that have sailed and sailed away, but at this hour, they've anchored in your harbor 4. Snow on the beach - Ocean imagery 5. Hits Different - Sun burns my heart and the SAND hurts my feelings There is quite a bit of ocean/wave/beach imagery throughout Midnights within the songs themselves and in the prologue and so to me the dive has always made sense.

From the footage about TLOAS in this episode, it's really interesting that it looks like Taylor also went back to Sweden in November or December after the EU leg wrapped. It seems like she was working on TLOAS during the Summer and also afterwards, around Christmas Time, hence the mulled wine. This documentary is overall really making it very apparent that Taylor is ALWAYS working. I know it sounds obvious, but I am guessing I am fathoming what her schedule has looked like in the past few years, and it's PACKED. Writing music, going to the studio, doing fittings, shooting or planning music videos.....

She def leaves immediately from the stage for security reasons! Otherwise she would likely have to wait at the stadium until the traffic died down entirely because everyone is gonna notice the team of cars. She can’t risk getting stuck in traffic. It would be a massive security risk to herself and anyone around her for her exact location to be known for that long without both her full team and the stadium security there for protection (like during the show). Also she simply needs to get back asap to the hotel to start resting! I wonder if her fam hanging back may just be logistical? Andrea and Scott may have business items to wrap up with the local teams, etc. Also could be that it’s better for the security team if the post-show process is pretty much the same every night. Taylor leaves first with at most one guest. I could see her wanting to make their jobs as easy as possible and them having to have a million different scenarios worked out would be a lot of work. Anywho love fathoming these little nuances with you both. Can’t wait for the next one!

For the midnights dive- midnights is about sleepless nights throughout her life, you could look at the dive as her diving into those memories, drowning in them and then bringing those memories to life for the audience through the midnights set. The dive isn’t about the lyrics of midnights, but what those midnights are- waves crashing over you

In the first few surprise song sets, the piano was actually in a pool of rippling water (which felt very debut coded actually, and the first piano surprise song was Tim McGraw), so I always thought that was the same water she was diving into....but then at some point early on the pool disappeared so the dive feels more random. Another mystery!

Girls I’ve been deeply offended by the Us discussion!! I think it is SO superior!! Maybe you haven’t listened enough!?? I’m convinced that’s the problem. I agree maybe that it has attempted to be an All Too Well and it has definitely not achieved that, but the lyrics are amazing, the bridge just keeps going and going and the melody… OMG. First of all, love you chickens. While I'd love to hear from Austin, i think it's pretty clear from how he moves that he prefers to keep a low profile. I think her diving into the water was meant as a transition from 1989 to midnights.. cuz I think in the original order of the eras it went from 1989 (which she gave a beach vibe with the taylor‘s version) then the surprise songs and then midnights. that’s the only way it makes sense to me 😅

The dive to me is refference to The Last Great American Dynasty, then Willow… she was pacing the rocks, staring out at the midnight sea… she almost jumped in… Until she actually did, she made the move, took the next step, moved on. The ocean imagery comes back in Snow on the Beach on Midnights. I think it makes perfect sense AND is a cool thing to do on stage. I don’t think Taylor would go through with it if it felt like there’s no connection to her art.

This video is old but I had a thought about the wave going into midnights. I always felt like the acoustic section is supposed to be the Debut era. Just her and a guitar/piano playing the songs she wrote. When she’s at the piano there are waves underneath her just like the pond in the Debut cover. The wave is her crashing into her newest era (at the time) from her Debut.

Something I wanted to point out after re-watching this when you were talking about people that don’t like Taylor Swift have bad energies. And all the famous people that have met Taylor have always said nothing but nice things. The one person that kind of stands out to me is obviously Charli XCX. But like even though she doesn’t like Taylor, the stuff that she says about Taylor is never “bad stuff”. She just says she’s annoying😂😂 like she’s not out here digging up dirt on Taylor (probably cause she has nothing to say) she just doesn’t like her personality.
