Hey besties! As I'm sure you're well aware, it's our first music video rewatch for the 1989 era! Naturally we had to start with Shake It Off (offensive) plus Taylor was kind enough to give us 8 behind the scenes videos which we reacted to as well 🫶

Would you guys consider reacting to the Reneé Rapp EP or album? She is a bit more of a "big voice artist", but she also has good lyrics. If you ever decide to react to her, I suggest you start with the EP because then you can really see her growth.

She makes the moves up as she goes which is why she’s learning all those different dances. It’s a metaphor to figuring out her life as she goes. Then it’s just her in black clothes which is like a canvas and it’s also where she has her new hair down (as opposed to the other scenes). She’s just showing who she is. (Also I don’t know if you fathom that in the video because I just started watching lmao)

Suburban Legends, Slut, and Is It Over Now is just where it is for me right now...Say Don't Go is everything but it hurts too much to listen to, have to be in a good place for that 🍾💙 Also yes that’s why I and so many of us relate to Taylor b/c she always chooses to be authentic and so many of us are still trying to grapple with that…No fronts 💯

I remember when this video came out! I watched all these behind the scenes things too. Such a fun and iconic video. Of course, it didn’t go without controversy- I remember a rapper tweeted about it being racist and cultural appropriation. The director Mark fiercely defended it as massively inclusive etc. I still love this video because it showcased such great dancing, Taylor was her goofy self, and because of the fans at the end being where Taylor fits in the most. I really enjoyed your thoughts and insights. Thank you for including Shake It Off in your 1989 era, it’s still one of her most popular songs in a stadium 😀

It’s notable that she uses visuals similar to Nicki Minaj and Gaga who were at the top with her in 2014. She’s kinda showing that she’s not listening to the constant comparison the media does of pop stars. She’s just doing her own thing and she doesn’t care what they say.

Waittt I love that those dancers are called Animators. I studied animation (the film medium not the dance style) in college and the way the move really is like a character rig being puppeted. So cool!

That’s immediately where my mind went it’s a very classic Audrey Hepburn look and I remember of an interview during 1989 where Taylor talked about Audrey Hepburn and more specifically her style and fashion !!

Hi hi hi the choreographer is the amazing Tyce Diorio (idk if that’s how it’s spelled) and he was one of the most frequent featured choreographers on So You Think You Can Dance here in the US! An absolute icon in the American dance community and as an approx 13 year old dancer at the time I would’ve DIED if I had known he choreographed this lmao! Thought Bonny may appreciate as a fellow former dancer

Actually slut is my absolute favorite (directly followed by is it over know and now that we don’t talk).. I can’t get over the bridge, the second pre chorus.. the whole thing actually.. 🥹🥹 but I consciously made the decision to not expect anything from any song and just experience them and decide then, so maybe that’s why I’m not thrown off by the different concept

Shake it Off is so offensive and she should be put in Jail. Like for your first single off this rebirth album to be about not letting others define who you are, and essentially not caring about what people try to portray her to be. I was not anticipating having a whole new level of appreciation for this music video & song! I recognized the choreographer in the video (Tyce DiOrio) cause I was a big fan of the show So You Think You Can Dance and he was one of the judges & choreographers on the show. Plus I also knew a few of the dancers cause they had been contestants on it too. So that was fun.

By the way, the way I've also always interpreted that MV is that the different dance styles represent her trying out and exploring her SOUNDS. By that point in her career she had started doing that and obviously we know now how much more and far she explored. But I always saw it as "I cannot and WILL NOT be confined to only one genre of music, I will do my own thing because that's what I love." And oooh what a beautiful message to go back to now that we've had all those 5 other albums after 🥹💙

I’m having a moment right now of fathoming Taylor transitioning to pop music…I never understood why it was such a big deal. She is still the same songwriter and her songs are still the same when you strip them down to the basic acoustic versions that they all start out out as. Also, why do we expect artists to only stick to one genre of music forever? That’s like asking us as music lovers to only listen to one genre of music. That’s ridiculous and not even possible. So why is it such a big deal? I DO see how the industry is beginning to change probably because Taylor taught everyone that it was not only possible, but beneficial to show versatility because that’s what being a human is. It’s a mix of everything so music should be free like that.
