Hahaha it is the pattern of the British flag, and we have a little one in the corner of our flag which suggests the connection back to them. I also found out that the original US flag did in fact have a Union Jack on it until independence!

I had actually never seen these performances, so it was great to watch them with you, despite the horrible and exploitative Victoria's Secret brand. Two things: 1. I feel like Taylor analyzes every situation she knows she is going to be in and figures out what is going to be needed for that situation, and then executes to perfection. This is a big part of why she is so successful. So she is so iconic in these shows because she figured it all out ahead of time, just as with her SNL monologue. The slightly negative way to say this is that she can change everything about herself to fit in, but the positive way to say this is that she slays in any situation she has time to prepare for. 2. I think a side effect of Taylor re-recording her first 6 albums is an even stronger desire to be in control. So I am not sure she will ever do a show or anything that someone else organizes, ever again. No magazine profiles, no festivals, no Jingle Bell thing. She could go on Tiny Desk or Radio One, though, because the artist Is in control. She might do a talk show if it is someone she trusts and thinks of as a friend, like Jimmy Fallon, but I would not expect to see her on Jimmy Kimmel, like ever.

OH, I was NOT expecting my US flag knowledge to be applicable in this video, but here we are: There was a woman named Betsy Ross who sewed the first version of the US flag and it originally had 13 stars for the first colonies (states). There are have been multiple versions as new states were added so there always been a star for every state.

Taylor blends seamlessly with the models and her vocals are impeccable. I'm glad you addressed how cringeworthy the Victoria Secret brand was/is in general. i doubt too many of the women involved in this video would have had anything to do with the company if they had known about then CEO Les Wexner's ties to Jeffrey Epstein. I had never seen the 2014 video at all, so that was a nice surprise.

the VS era was so interesting, I remember how big of a deal the fashion show was at the time here, such a big spectacle. looking back I can only imagine the toxicity and the brand is deeply problematic but I wish they could try to remake it in a new way somehow. also completely agree with Bonny, the competitive aspect was something that had never been broadcasted like that before

Would love a re-fathoming of You’re Losing Me with the info from Jack! So many people are saying it means they’ve been broken up all this time, but You’re Losing Me clearly is about the breakdown of a relationship not the breakup. She also wouldn’t have kept it in the vault unless she still had some hope! I think they had their issues on and off, and finally ended it around when it was announced to the public. All I can find of it is the clip where she's explaining where the high-pitched "STAY" idea came from, but if you can find the full GQ interview, I think it would be SO interesting to see it. Back on the VS topic, though--your conversation about the hierarchy in the brand with the "angels" immediately reminded me of the hierarchy in ballet companies. Principal dancers would be the "angels" level in ballet. It sort of makes sense for the organization of ballet companies, but it's definitely also on the toxic side.

Yeah this was one of the first times I remember thinking "Don't fuck with Taylor" and that girl was done. No career. However - I think the comment by that model was a huge part of Taylor's eating disorder and just struggle with her body. Imagine a model saying that about you when you look like Taylor. (You can barely see her in this - but she's the model with the yellow balloon at the end. So she didn't walk during Taylor's performances.)

omg two of my favourite performances ever. literally right around the 1989 era when I was obsessed with VS(at the time especially when the shows were artsy and the brand was leaning into fitness and training for the weight of the wings and stuff lol) and becoming a (trying to tone it down but totally already a) swifite... What cracks me up about these Victoria Secret shows is that I believe at that point it was NOT done to have a butt with a thong shown on network TV in the US- cable TV was different. I was laughing at how they edited the views of the asses of the angels as they walked. They cropped up or made sure the women had some kind of sheer covering over their asses, you kinda can see some ass cheeks in a few shots but probably nothing like was shown in person at the runway show.

Canada is also part of the British Commonwealth but our flag does not have the Union Jack. But we fly the British flag beside our flag on government buildings. So Canada is like a sister country to Australia! Like folklore and evermore. Australia would have to represent folklore because of the summery weather and Canada is like a frozen wasteland (kidding) so it has to be evermore. Anyway…that was a weird tangent.
