TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  How to sketch hands

When I first started developing my own skills in sketching people, I used to hide the hands as they would often spoil my sketch! I hope to share with you what I've learnt and the simple steps you can use to improve sketching them.

(If you're a beginner, sketching hands can be very tricky so please just try your best and have fun with the learning process. It might take some time to be happy with your hands 😊)

I agree that hands can really mess with an otherwise good figure sketch for me. Often the movement of the fingers is what doesn’t seem to work for me. The proportion of the hand to the fingers, also the position of the fingers seems hard. I would never draw a hand in anything but graphite so I can change things until I get it right.

I don't have enough experience of hands yet to say but my instinct would tell that if Rodin had a problem proportioning his hands to the other a atomical features, I'd say Karen will too 😃 (there's a Thinker in the garden of what was his studio round the corner from me and the size of the hands and feet completely freak me out. Perhaps that was what he was thinking "Could do with a Scottie tutorial on hands 🤔 " 😁

I think drawing hands is knowing when to stop a line - I’m often too short or too long and my hands become crazy claw like things. I’ve seen you draw your diamond shape and morph it into a hand - maybe you have one or two (or three) steps that can be relied on to make a decent hand.
