TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:   Urban Sketching - Japanese Shop Front

I hope you're having a great start to the week! We'll be sketching a Japanese shop for our next tutorial. It's a great subject for beginners because we don't have to be concerned by any tricky perspectives but it still has interesting and vibrant details!

Let me know what you like about this reference and what you would find challenging to sketch in the comments below.

Awesome! Can't wait!

John

As soon as I saw this I was excited 😎

Challenge for me would be determining how much tiny detail to include and how in a way that still feels loose and not tedious. Love all the colors in this photo!

Karen King

I love drawing details a little too much maybe, but I understand the value of knowing what to leave out. I will be interested in seeing what you leave out and how you decide.

Lisa Smith

Definitely the vending machine and how to stop from spending hours drawing all tiny details.

Claire Idrac

Hi Scottie ! Definitely how to simplify and still represent what are all the stuff in the shop

Lorna Graham

I tend to mess this type of scene up, can look messy so how to simplify will be good.

Lynn

As others said simplifying… really struggle with that

I agree , I "love" all the vibrant coulors but deciding what to keep and what to paint out will be a challenge.

Basic question - newbie here - is the tutorial a live event or recorded and posted? And when is it available?

Fabulous colours

Wohoo ! My favorite subjects : Shop fronts ! 😍😇🏠 I really could use some good tips to loose up my drawing style. I also just joined recently to motivate me in practicing again, very excited for this challenge! 🤩

Hilary Metcalf

Looking forward to seeing strategies for coping with all that colourful detail. I don't ike the addition of the figure to the scene, especially as she is all rugged up for winter in what is clearly a summer setting. Think I'll ignore her!
