TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  People Sketching -  Figures for Urban Sketching

Hi all! Hope you are well. This week we are going to be sketching figures in an urban scene. Usually these are small and very impressionistic but they can unfortunately also detract from your building sketch if they aren’t quite right.

Let me know what size figures you’d like the most focus on in the tutorial and any questions you have you’d like me to answer In the comments below 👇🏼.

UPDATE:

I’ve been considering slightly changing the tutorial cycle that I had last year. Instead of people/urban sketching/portraits/urban objects over 4 weeks, I am thinking of combining Urban sketching and urban objects into one week so the cycle will now go: people/portraits/urban sketching. I think this will be a more focused tutorial cycle on topics that people are most interested in. With the urban sketching tutorials, I will focus on buildings but occasionally do a tutorial on a special subject such as cars, boats or animals.

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Week Starting 29th January: Portrait Sketching

Week Starting 5th February: Urban Sketching - Trees and Plants

Really, I’d love to know how to do them all! Thanks.

linc hyde

Yeah all of them ideally, because i seem to be going ok with the body proportions but the different sizing of faces really throws me and i can never get the face looking normal.

Jean S Frankel

Love to do them all Scottie - you rock - thank you!

Joni K

Crowds of people… any size.

Volta

Yes to crowds and small figures but really love to practice all of them!

Vivienne Adamson

I really would like to practice all of them Scottie as figures daunt me. Thankyou.

Susan

All if them thanks Scottie and will enjoy the new topical tutorials !

Hadrien Dykiel

A mix would be great! I find eyes challenging especially

Scott

Ha ha everyone and in-between!

Jodi Dawson

To show to progression of detail from sm to lg would be great- and how to decide if we draw all the people or just those that stand out?

Roz

It seems that very small people are particularly unique as you really don’t worry about the facial features or a “normal” body with well defined legs, arms etc. Medium & large people seem more similar in that you do consider what I mentioned above. I do think a mix as in the 1st photo would be the most helpful. Thank you!

Josh

I think a focus on the DIFFERENCES between the three sizes would be interesting. For example, what you add and/or drop as sizes change.

Josh

I find bicycles to be great subjects and really difficult to get right. I'd love to see you tackle this "urban object" teaching challenge.

Mareike Biggam

Hi Scottie, I find all sizes within a scene interesting. But perhaps splitting them in different tutorials (1x large, 1x small, 1 x medium, 1x all together) is also a possibility ? But of course a lot more work for you🙂

Calufe

Gente en la playa o en una terraza . Lo siento se escribir en tres lenguas pero no en inglés 😬

Lorna Graham

All Scottie as I just love sketching people. I do find crowds/several people in a scene really fun and interesting. Thank you ☺️

Eva Karakoudi

I am a beginner. So, all of them are challenging for me!

Reto Häsler

Hi Scottie. For me is the same as Roz wrote. "A mix as in the 1st photo would be the most helpful. " That's what I see when I make an urban sketch. Some people are close and others are far away. Its also a good way to get depth and to use the eye level.

Wendy Rowe

Hi Scottie, I'm a newcomer with little experience of figures. All 3 areas would be great for me especially getting perspective on heights of heads would be most appreciated. Just working my way through the Fundamentals :-)

Karen

Mostly small. I find it hard to do “less is more” approach. At same time, most scenes have a variety of people sizes. Bottom line—ALL.

Leanne Rees

HI Scottie, I love your approach to drawing people. I am looking forward to this exercise. I find it hard to draw a small face and figure especially in an urban scene at table.. All of what you have suggested in your poll are great.

Leanne Rees

Also how do you declutter the background to emphasise the people in it.
