TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  Portrait Sketching - Front View

1) This week I'm sketching this portrait above from a previous poll that we all liked but came a close second. I think front view faces can be challenging so it's excellent practice!

2) At the same time, I'm creating a second 'portraits fundamentals tutorial' that will be ready in a few weeks. It will be an 'all-in-one' tutorial, that summarises all the techniques that we have been using in recent tutorials. This will include all the basic proportions, how to sketch the face from different angles as well as different sizes.

Please let me know in the comments and via the poll what you'd like me to cover in this fundamentals tutorial. You can choose more than one option in the poll if you like. Your suggestions and help on these fundamentals tutorials have been so valuable in the past! 🤗

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Week Starting 26th February: Urban Sketching (Simple shop front)

Week Starting  4th March: People Sketching (Groups of medium size people)

Week Starting 11th March: Fundamentals Portraits Tutorial for Beginners

Bernie

Scottie, is there any one feature (eg, eyes) that is more important to get right than the others? There seem to be a lot of ingredients in the overall facial/portrait ‘recipe’!

Joni K

I’d like to hear your helpful tips for drawing ears.

Karen Pinzás Morrongiello

I would love to know how to start, the faces are one of the most difficult things to do, and sometimes I end up with faceless people to focus in other parts of the

Mary L Doty

I would also like the different proportion at various ages.( infant, toddler, adolescents, teens vs adults) Thanks so much.

David

Having a terrible time with noses!

Karen

I have trouble finding the hair line and the back of the skull, especially when a front view of a female with hair in a pony tail, for instance. I can’t seem to make them feminine. Does this make sense?

Michele Campbell

Omg glasses and hats are prob my biggest struggle!

Lorna Graham

Where I tend to make errors is marking out the chin. Sometimes I haven’t left enough room. One other error is when I sketch side profile I give the person too much hair (in height). This only happens if I’m trying to sketch fast. ☺️

H

Children! They don’t have the same proportions… & also any tips on capturing likeness (I guess the answer is accuracy but are there common mistakes or tips?). Thank you Scottie!

Reto Häsler

Among many things that have already been mentioned, I have a hard time sketching the legs of sitting people. The foreshortening of the thigh and the connection to the body often don't look right.

Keep It Rusty

How to capture features with a varying degree of character (mouths that look different from one sketch/reference to the next, for example)

Jesús Roldán

Maybe something about how to sketch people from real life instead of a picture :)

Terri

I'm struggling with placing the features correctly when the head is angled and tilted (not quite 3/4, almost a side view, but also tilted either forward or backwards, if that makes sense). Would also be interested in learning more about capturing facial expressions.

Ana Correia

How to "froze" a person in live sketching so we could draw. Tips to register the person's position and face. People don't keep quiet 😅

Dallas Milligan

Could you please add an “all of the above” button. I'll choose that one.

Ashley McMahan

I find it hard to find the right place to put the beginnings of the chin, during the initial preliminary lines phase?

Marie Cornelis

merci Scottie, tes tuttos sont bien utiles!!!

Marie Cornelis

ohhh lala comment envoyer le sondage ci dessus?

Karen King

Drawing/painting the aging face.

Izitiz

All of the above!

Leanne Rees

I Love your work. Trying to get the size of the face. Ie the forehead to the chin. I noticed you start with the hair. This part I find the hardest. If I get that wrong, I get everything else wrong.

Sebastian

Sketching faces if you have a photo in front of you is comparable easy, but in real urban sketching live people are moving all the time. How to handle that? Would be interesting to have not a picture but a a movie as a reference....

Mansma

I always need refreshing on facial proportions and drawing eyes. A much smaller need, but one I’ve encountered lately is facial piercings.

Jodi Dawson

I would like to see the subjects holding something- last week proved I need help with hands 🙌

Deb Prado

Hello Scottie! Your method of starting with the silhouette has been a game changer for me. It is much faster and enjoyable for me to draw from observation than to build the face with the Loomis method. Thank you! I’m now practicing how to simplify and stylize facial features. I’d like to add more variation to my sketches, so people look more like themselves.

Kathy Nieder

Noses, noses, noses. So hard to get the shadows right.

Kristin Filitti

How to get the angle and shape of the face right. I feel like my eyes and face look ok but the chin or eyes and nose look as if they are pointed in the wrong direction

David Donnelly

I would like to learn facial expressions, happy, sad, surprise and anger. I guess it’s mainly the eyes and mouth shapes.

Barbara C

I agree that I would like to learn how to show strong emotions in people's faces.
