Goodness we are witnessing the resurgence of traditional fantasy, and WHA is one of them, if I have to differ this anime to Frieren with the characters and Delicious in Dungeon with exploration, WHA excels on the creativity of the application of magic. Can't wait for this journey for y'all

I like your chemistry idea. I think the spell is forbidden/evil because of the damage it can cause. So far it is implied the effect of the spell depends on the precision and size of the sigil. All the other sigils had very small effects relative to their size but this one had a large reaction despite it being the same sigil size as the others. Now imagine the the effect of the crystal spell if the sigil was 2 or even 3 times bigger.

Beautiful first episode. I’m just a tiny bit worried that the studio might not keep up the quality, since the only other show they have done so far (Zom 100) also had a pretty strong first episode but sadly dropped in quality afterward. Also, Qifrey’s voice sounded so familiar. I had to look it up and it is actually the same VA as Tanjiro/Okarun.

Bug Films (the studio behind this) has a bad, infamous history of having a really good first couple of animated episodes and completely mismanaging quality afterwards, with huge production issues, delays every single week. It was finally delayed for 4-6 months, killing all hype and attention it had. Since this is a seasonal new anime, I hope that doesn't happen. I was personally waiting for it to end first. Now I'll watch it here. I just wanted you to know some reactors dropped/forgot about that anime because of that quality drop (btw they already delayed this once 🤞)

I am optimistic. What is quite reassuring is that the studio has already completed production of all episodes before the release. It's a very rare strategy for TV anime, but they did that to ensure the quality. They also postponed the release for half a year instead of rushing it. In interviews you can feel that the studio staff really love the manga themselves. It is a very difficult show to animate. Because the original manga has insanely detailed and well-drawn scenes and characters (and most were hand-drawn). The lead animator said they had to simplify the designs a lot to make production possible. I was worried when I heard that but this first episode gave me a lot of faith.

In my experience as an artist, it’s more a difference of intentionality. If you are specifically trying to emulate an artist less skilled than you, it can be difficult to capture the same essence of being“bad” at art, than if an artist of that skill level were to actually attempt it. You have to be a lot more intentional about how the drawing is “bad”. I don’t know that it would be more difficult than drawing perfectly, though, as that is still a tall order, even for a skilled artist. So I would say there is some truth to what Wesley was saying, but I think it depends on the artist, too.

What is really funny is that Gojo's voice actor, Yuichi Nakamura, is casted in this show. But he didn't play Qifrey, instead he played another character that looks exactly like him irl. LOL

I am not an expert but i have done a fair bit of stuff with digital art and it is actually pretty hard to deliberately make something look badly done without it looking deliberate it's a bit like a smart person trying to look dumb in a test its very easy to over compensate

The episodes are free to watch for NA in their YT channel "Akane-banashi Global" I won't be insistent or anything, I just want the name to be on your radar.

Oh, even if I've just a few volumes I actually started reading this manga in like, 2018 lol (tho it probably wasn't available yet in the USA, I live in France we tend to have mangas edited early). I don't remember why I didn't continue, it was good. But here the animation team did a fantastic job visually, this version looks very pretty, and it keeps the cosy vibe.

I think the first episode is way better than the rest of the series and if you look at the ratings, they show a similar picture. The first episode is rated almost a 9 and then it drops quite a bit below 8 for the most part, except for the finale. I am not even saying it is bad, just that they did not maintain the level they showed they were capable of, even if it is probably not entirely their fault.

I know nothing about this mange/anime... Or French, for that matter. But I do know that "atelier" is a French word for an artisanal workshop/studio. So, with no evidence or knowledge to support it, I'm going to assume that atelier rhymes with sommelier. I'm also going to guess this former seamstress becomes a witch-hat-maker, as that seems a more likely explanation of the title than it being a magic worshop staffed by "witch-hats". 😊 Of course, this being written in Japanese, it's entirely possible that none of this is true. If I'm wrong, don't correct me! I'll find out in due time!

This one is great, I postponed watchign your guys' reaction because I wanted to watch with my partner we binged the released episodes its so fun and refreshing the quality is amazing wow its as if its like really new age anime but this has to have been derived from the manga and people have said its not as detailed as to make it easier to animate I can't even begin to imagine how good the manga is supposed to be maybe one day i'll read it though its not my forte
